- SPECIAL EVENT: On Sunday 17 July at 6.30pm, St Columba’s Choir will be singing Evensong at the church of Christ the Consoler, which is in the grounds of Newby Hall at Skelton on Ure. This is a redundant church now in the care of the Churches’ Conservation Trust and so this is a very special opportunity for the choir to sing and for others to hear Evensong in this beautiful church.

The funeral of Swale View resident Ray Kirby will take place at Maple Park Crematorium at 2.30pm on Wednesday 17 July. Afterwards there’ll be an opportunity to chat and remember an old friend over a drink and refreshments at The Swan in Topcliffe. Everybody is welcome to attend.

The Angel Inn at Topcliffe
After over a year of renovations, The Angel Inn at Topcliffe has reopened. The doors to the whole pub and restaurant were opened on Friday and the public eagerly called in to have a look around the fantastic new-look Angel Inn.
Here’s what the Angel team said on Facebook. “Dave, Maggie, Katie and Rose would like to thank everyone for their patience in the wait for the opening. We thank the staff for their hard work and dedication over the past year. We are overjoyed to welcome new and old faces into the brand new Angel Inn at Topcliffe.”

Thirsk Summer Big Sing
Last week pupils in Silver Birch Class attended the Thirsk Big Summer Sing held at Thirsk School. There were eight local schools involved and the children had a fun-packed afternoon of rehearsals followed by an evening performance to a packed audience. The children thoroughly enjoyed the event and sung their hearts out.

Pirates of the Curry Bean
Also last week, Maple class performed their end of year play, Pirates of the Curry Bean, which had everyone in stitches at the two performances. Well done all of the pupils in Maple class for such an engaging and funny play.

Eco Warrior Day
Academy pupils recently held an Eco Warrior Day which included litter picking in around the school, on the village playing field and in other parts of Topcliffe. Money for eco warrior badges and equipment was raised by baking and selling biscuits. Monitors have now been appointed to keep a watch on the litter situation in our community…and make arrangements to try and keep the village clean.

Chef’s Table at The Catton Kitchen
Following the success of last year’s Chef’s Table event, it is being repeated this year on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 August. Alex is a very talented solo artist with a great repertoire of songs from the 1960s to the present…all guaranteed to get you on the dance floor or at least to get your feet tapping. Topcliffe & Asenby Produce Show 2024
The show will be held on Saturday 31 August at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall and there will be 83 classes in five categories: 47 horticultural classes: 17 baking, jams, preserves and pickles classes: 3 floral classes: 11 hobbies classes and 5 specific classes that only children can enter. Galeón Andalucía in Whitby
This amazing replica of a Spanish galleon will be visiting Whitby Harbour from Wednesday 10 to Monday 15 July. It’s a replica of the ship used by the Spanish during the 16th to 18th centuries. Pickhill Strawberry Fayre
This year’s event is on Saturday 13 July starting 1pm and running through to 11pm. Children’s entertainment from 5 until 7pm, followed by a DJ playing all the hits from 7 until 9pm, and finally a band – Doubtful Bottle – playing from 9 until 11pm. There’s a bar and lots of food offerings, including BBQ, pizza and jacket potatoes…and freshly picked strawberries. There’ll also be an ice cream van on site. Look out for a range of stalls and craft stands, plus games and lots of entertainment for the young ones. See poster here.

Leeming Families Air Display
RAF Leeming is planning a families air display on the afternoon of Thursday 25 July and it will provide an opportunity for the general public to watch from various viewing points around the airbase boundary. The display will include take off and landings by Eurofighter Typhoons, Hawker Hunters, Quatari Hawks and Chinook Helicopters…and a fly-past by The Red Arrows. The public will not be allowed on the base, but several viewing areas, including Roman Road, Leeming, DL7 9SN, are available. There’s ample free public car parking.

Thirsk Model Railway Show
On at Thirsk Town Hall on Westgate from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 28 July. It will feature fifteen model railway layouts, a variety of traders and lots of different demonstrators, as well as refreshments, a children’s competition and a tombola. World axe throwing championship coming to Thirsk
An international axe throwing championship is coming to the UK for the first time ever and Thirsk will be the host town. The event will be staged at Thirsk racecourse on the weekend 23 to 25 August. Baldersby-based club, the Axemore Throwing Club, is taking the lead on planning and delivering the world championships, which are sanctioned by the Global Axe Throwing Commission, the international governing body for double-bit axe throwing.

Baldersby St James book sale
This year’s book sale will be held on the weekend of Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September between 10am and 5pm. The organisers are looking for volunteers to help arrange the book displays (Wednesday 4 to Friday 6 September) and after the event to tidy the books away (Sunday 8 September at 4pm). They also invite donations of any books, which can be left in the church at any time during the day.
