Topcliffe & Asenby Produce Show
In order to give everyone time to plan and prepare their entries in this year’s Annual Produce Show, here are a few pointers to help get you started.
This year’s show will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 29 August. This year there are 88 classes, an increase of four on previous years. The new classes are – Pork Pies in the Baking category, woodworking in hobbies/handicrafts and examples of handwriting for adults and children.
There is also a brand new trophy – The Ray Fothergill Cucumber Cup, a special trophy donated by Joan Fothergill in memory of her husband Ray, who was a great supporter of the Produce Show, who sadly passed away last year.
There are five categories, including:
• 47 classes in the Horticultural section.
• 18 classes in the baking/jams/preserves and pickles category.
• 3 floral classes.
• 13 classes in the hobbies/handicrafts section

Parish to consult residents about future of the Toll Booth
In the latest edition of The Tattler – which should be delivered to all households no later than Tuesday – there’s a comprehensive article about the Toll Booth. It deals with the recent survey conducted on the structure and the potential costs of putting it right and maintaining it in the future. The cost implications are laid out and the views of the Parish Council are outlined. You can read the full article here.
At the Parish Council meeting last Thursday evening, councillors said it is decision time for the building and they will soon be circulating a letter outlining the issues, along with potential costs, to all households in Topcliffe costs to ascertain residents views about the next steps. The letter will seek a clear ‘yes’ or ‘no’ mandate for future action, which basically means spend the necessary money or attempt to dispose of the building.
When asked about what would happen to the snooker club if a decision is taken to sell the building, the Chair of the Parish Council indicated that options for relocation to other sites would be considered and the Council would help in any way it could.
Topcliffe parish councillors will be available at the Village Hall Open Day & Brunch on Sunday 22 March to discuss the recent Toll Booth survey and its implications for the future of the building.

Why is the postbox wrapped up?
Royal Mail is introducing 3,500 solar-powered postboxes across the UK, ripping out the iconic look of the red pillar boxes that have punctuated Britain’s streets for nearly two centuries. That includes the postbox outside Topcliffe Post Office.
In the new design, solar panels on the top of the postboxes power a digitally-activated drawer, allowing customers to deposit small parcels. Items as large as a shoebox can be posted in the pillar boxes, in what Royal Mail says is the “biggest redesign in its 175-year history”.
The change comes as Royal Mail is struggling in the face of competition from other delivery companies.

Warm Hub Lunch
The next Warm Hub will take place on Wednesday 18 March between 11.30am and 12.45pm. There’ll be a selection of home-made meals, followed by puddings and tea or coffee. All welcome.
Last week’s lunch saw 50 meals served and a charitable donation of £50 was made to Herriot Hospice in Thirsk.
There’s no set charge for Warm Hub meals but donations are requested to help pay the cost of hiring the Village Hall and for essential food and drink items that must be purchased for each lunch. The organisers don’t receive grant support or surplus food from supermarkets: everything is bought and paid for, cooked and brought into the hall by volunteers, many of whom are senior citizens themselves.
Residents of Topcliffe and Asenby can have a meal delivered if they are housebound – either on a short-term basis because of illness, or longer-term. If you wish to have a meal on the day the Warm Hub is held, please get in touch with Karen Morley on 01845 577426.

Churchyard Maintenance
Thanks to a loyal and energetic team of volunteers the churchyard has been left looking extremely neat and tidy throughout the winter. St Columba’s church community is very indebted to them all.
With the arrival of spring there’s a need to restart the regular grounds maintenance to ensure that we keep on top of things. As in past years, a series of Saturday working parties is being planned. These will be held between 9.30am and noon on Saturday 21 and 28 March.
They are open to all who would like to offer an hour or two to help the spring tidy up and also continue progress on reclaiming the lower terraces. Please join in if you can.
In the longer term, it’s hoped that one or two more volunteers might join the regular grass-cutting team. The old adage that ‘a job shared is a job halved’ seems appropriate here!
Special thanks go to Malc Morley who has very kindly given the maintenance team’s two mowers their annual service, which would otherwise be quite a drain on church funds.
