Asenby Summer Soiree
TODAY: Sunday 24 August between 2pm – 4pm, Asenby Village is holding a Summer Soiree in the Community Park off Jamesville Way. The theme of the event is the era of the 1940s and 1950s. There will be live music courtesy of The Cherry Tones, a female duo, and alcoholic refreshment in the form of a glass of Aperol Spritz (or non-alcohol alternative) is being provided by The Crab & Lobster.
There’ll be lots of fun and games for the children. Those attending are encouraged to dress up in clothing appropriate to the era and there’ll be prizes for the best dressed. Everyone is encouraged to bring a picnic. Tables and chairs will be available for older residents. The £5 entry fee for adults includes a serving of dessert and a raffle ticket in the big prize draw. Among the excellent range of prizes will be afternoon teas at Grantley Hall and Saltmore (Sandsend).Children go free! All event profits will go towards maintaining and updating Asenby Community Park.

Thirsk Market Place pavement maintenance

|
|
North Yorkshire Council will begin pavement maintenance in Thirsk Market Place on Monday, 1 September, between 7:30am and 4pm. The first phase of work will be between number 51 to 55 and 65 to 67 market Place. To minimise disruption to local businesses, work will be carried out in manageable sections. The work will progress until autumn. It will then pause during the colder temperatures, which will prevent the installation of new paving. The Council will provide further updates on when work will resume. The town will remains open for business throughout this work and disruption will be kept to a minimum.

Increased aircraft activity
RAF Leeming has given notice of increased movement by aircraft operating from the aerodrome from 25 August to 21 September. The base will be hosting fixed wing aircraft and helicopters for a tri-service exercise which will include low and late flying. The RAF says every effort will be made to keep the disturbance to a minimum.

North Yorkshire Libraries Photo Competition
|

|
Is your child a budding nature photographer? If so, they may wish to participate in North Yorkshire Libraries current competition. Children aged 7 to 11 are invited to take part in this nature photography competition featuring anything they see in the North Yorkshire countryside or in their own garden – a close up of a plant, an insect, an animal or a view of water, hills or sky. The submissions should be landscape, no more than 4mb in size and ideally in jpg format. Each child can send a maximum of three images. Photographs, with details of where they were taken and the child’s name and library card number, can be emailed to library.secretaries@northyorks.gov.uk The closing date is Saturday, 13 September.

Asenby Planning Application withdrawn
An application submitted to North Yorkshire Council in May for a large commercial building on land close to Asenby allotments on the road towards Rainton, has been withdrawn by the applicant. See the letter from the Council here.

The Topcliffe & Asenby Produce Show
Only one week to go! Our annual show will be held on Saturday 30 August at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall. The classes and categories will be same as last year, meaning there’ll be 84 classes in total in five categories. Soup & Sweet Lunch
The next Soup and Sweet lunch will be held on Wednesday 3 September from 11.30am to 1pm. There’ll be hearty soup choices with a selection of sandwiches, cakes and tea or coffee. All welcome. There’s no set charge, but donations are welcome to help pay the rental cost of hiring the Village Hall and for food and drink items that must be purchased for each lunch.
The lunch on Wednesday 20 August saw 52 meals served and £174 raised from donations. Of this, £50 was presented to the Community Works charity in Thirsk and, after expenses, the balance was added to the Warm Hub Community Fund.

The Little Village Bakery
Here’s a reminder that Topcliffe resident Catherine Cowton – or Cat to those who know her – is launching a bakery business in the village from 6 September. The micro bakery will supply sourdough bread, scones and other home-made treats each week. 30 Years and Counting
On Saturday 13 September the Ritz Cinema will be offering free guided tours on the hour from 10am until 5pm (last tour 4pm) to celebrate 30 years as a cinema operated by volunteers. Numbers will be limited to 20 per tour – no booking, just turn up at the cinema.
The Ritz, which is now over 100 years old, is offering behind the scenes tours to areas not normally open to the public. The tours will be guided by experienced volunteers who will take visitors to areas that cannot normally be seen whilst the cinema is operating and explain the history of the building as a Mechanics’ Institute. There”ll be an exhibition to view.

Snape Textile Group Annual Exhibition

The Coffee and Chatter Group that meets in St James’ Church at Baldersby St James will be holding jigsaw puzzle exchanges on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The annual mammoth Book Sale will be held in St James’ church on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September. The organisers are on the lookout for volunteers to help put out books the week before and to pack away on the Sunday evening. This is a big event with many new books and is the church’s major fund raiser, which helps maintain the beautiful church in good condition.
