Those who would like to do so can remember their loved ones by name during the service. Names of those to be remembered can be added to the list before the start of the service or, if preferred, may be emailed beforehand to John Phillips – johnphillips05@gmail.com or Chris Hewlett – celhewlett@outlook.com
Everyone is most welcome to come along for any of these services. Refreshments are served after every Sunday morning service.

The Topcliffe Big Race Night

Dog food sale
The sale of pet food donated by Dalton Industrial Estate-based company IPN, raised an amazing £257 so far in support of Topcliffe’s Big Race Night which is on next Saturday evening. This cash and whatever is raised at the event itself will go to help fund Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall.
I’d like to thank John Pearson for his invaluable help and support manning the stall on Friday. His friendly approach helped sell more dog food than perhaps I would have sold if I’d been alone.
There’s 4 x 4kg bags of dry ‘Adult Dog’ chicken or beef remaining. These are just £7 each and available from Doug Allan – 07785 223707.

Macmillan Coffee Morning 1
The Macmillan coffee morning (above) hosted by The Angel a week ago was a great success, raising nearly £700 for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. Looked like a great spread to me and an all round enjoyable occasion. Dave, Maggie and the team would like to thank everyone who supported the event.

|
Macmillan Coffee Morning 2
The coffee morning organised by Jane Burnett, with a little help from friends, held yesterday in Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall raised an amazing £802 for Macmillan Cancer Support. There was a crowd of around 70 to 80 people. Sorry there are no photographs: everyone was so busy there wasn’t time to take any. But I was there and can confirm it was a very good spread, just like The Angel’s. The Angel supported this event too by baking plenty of scones. Jane thanked them and all the other villagers who made cakes.
Amazing that our communities could raise £1500 for this very worthwhile charity.

Bags2School recycling event

Thank you to everyone who supported the fundraising event.

Asenby Parish Council
Asenby residents are reminded that a vacancy currently exists on Asenby Parish Council. This is an opportunity to join others in overseeing village services, both now and for the future, and to contribute to further developments. The parish council meets a number of times each year depending on the needs of the village. The vacancy can be filled by co-opting an interested person i.e. there’s no election to fight. For further information please email asenbypc@gmail.com

National Three Peaks Challenge
A group of locals are tackling one of the biggest walking challenges to raise cash for the British Heart Foundation in memory of Ben Lowe, who passed away in March this year.
Five brave walkers, including Ben’s son Issac, are heading out on Saturday 14 October, tackling Snowdon first, then on to Scafell Pike in the Lake District and finally to Scotland’s biggest mountain, Ben Nevis.
They aim to conquer all three peaks in 24 hours and raise £2,000. If you can help by donating, please go to: https://tinyurl.com/ymjkzurz

Dumped body mystery has local connections
The identity of a woman whose body was found dumped more than 40 years ago is still not clear and ‘cold case’ detectives are hoping new information might result in further leads from the public.
Last Friday morning (6 October) the BBC Crimewatch programme updated the story and mentioned that the body might be that of a former Dalton resident named Joyce Curling or Curley and married to a Canadian named Vic who was linked to the military at Topcliffe Aerodrome at the time of her death.
The woman’s decomposed remains were discovered east of Sutton Bank in 1981, after an anonymous phone call to police. The mystery caller refused to give his name citing “security reasons”. Although she was found in 1981, the state of decomposition indicated it was likely she had been there since 1979. Experts concluded she was probably a married mother of two or three children, 5ft 4in (1.6m) tall, slim and aged about 40.
While police have long suspected she was murdered, there has never been enough evidence to officially categorise the case as such. Follow this link to watch the Crimewatch report – https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0gjvjrf

North Yorkshire Council – Locality Budgets
Each of the 90 councillors on North Yorkshire Council has a budget of £10,000 per year which they can allocate themselves to meet local needs and to support specific activities they wish to back.
These activities might promote social, economic or environmental wellbeing of the local communities the councillor represents. It is not a grants programme and each county councillor is responsible for determining how they wish to promote and use the budget.
You can read more about the scheme at https://edemocracy.northyorks.gov.uk/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=786
Asenby’s councillor is Cllr Nick Brown. He can be contacted on 07775 585661 or emailed at cllr.nick.brown@northyorks.gov.uk
Topcliffe (as part of Topcliffe & Sowerby), does not have an elected representative at the moment following the recent resignation of David Whitfield due to ill-health. It is likely an election will be called fairly soon and applications to the newly elected councillor can then be made.

Inspire Fund
Groups of residents or community organisations can apply for grants of up to £1,000 to help fund local projects and events. North Yorkshire Council’s ‘Stronger Community Inspire Fund’ is primarily about supporting local social action and encouraging people to get involved in their local community. These small grants aim to help establish new services, events or activities that increase social interaction, encourage neighbourliness or improve the wellbeing of individuals and communities.
The grant may be used to fund events or activities, help with start-up costs for new projects or services or to purchase small items of equipment. Grants will be made as a one-off contribution to the cost of an eligible project. Applications should demonstrate the project can be delivered without needing future support from this fund.
So, if any readers are thinking of starting a project or launching a new activity on our patch, this grant fund would be the perfect starting point. Here’s where you apply:

Beware of Amazon scams
There’s an apparent ‘epidemic’ of telephone calls by fraudsters pretending to be from Amazon, and North Yorkshire Police have issued a warning that everyone using Amazon should be extra vigilant.
The most common scam is a telephone call claiming your Amazon Prime subscription is due to expire and the recorded message asks you to press 1 to cancel or to speak to customer services. The call then goes through to a fraudster posing as an Amazon customer service representative. The fraudster advises the victim that remote access to their computer is required, and advises them to download an app which grants the fraudster access to their computer. But this software is used by the criminal to monitor the victim logging onto their online bank account, which allows the fraudster to see the victim’s personal and financial details.
If you receive a call, claiming to be from Amazon, hang up. Do not provide any personal information, your Amazon log in details, banking details or credit/debit card information. Never install any software or visit a website as a result of a cold call. Unsolicited requests for remote access to your computer should always raise a red flag. If you think you may have been a victim of this scam, contact your bank immediately and also report the matter to the police on 101 or via their website.
