Asenby play park survey – now live!
The survey of villagers’ views on the play park at the bottom of Jamesville Way in Asenby has gone live today. The Parish Council is conducting the survey to help guide what actions it should take with regards to the play park’s future. The survey contains nine questions and should take no longer than five minutes to complete. It can be completed online using this form (link below) or, if you would prefer, a paper copy is available with instructions in the bus shelter.
On-going maintenance of the park currently costs around £1,000 per year. The latest RoSPA report suggests the matting is starting to come apart and estimates show that repairs would cost around £4,000. Making additions will require further fund raising.
Complete the survey here: https://tinyurl.com/Asenby-Park
Everyone’s views on what should be done will be considered – even those who don’t use the park can have their say. The survey will be open for two weeks. You can give your views by email – asenbypc@gmail.com – if you wish.

The next tidy-up in Topcliffe will be held next Saturday 1 July and it’s hoped that lots of volunteers will give up a couple of hours to help clean up the village and make it more presentable. Tasks will include a litter pick, removing weeds and debris from gutters, road sign cleaning and painting of the fence from The Swan to the school. Meet at the village hall at 8.45am. Hi-vis jackets, litter pickers and black sacks will be provided. But please bring other tools – spades, brushes, shovels etc. – if you can. Bacon sandwiches and coffee will be provided at 11.15am in the village hall.

Topcliffe Bridge repairs underway
Last Monday, as promised, the repairs to the parapet of Topcliffe Bridge finally got underway. Three way traffic lights are in place whilst the work proceeds. At weekends the lights will be removed. It’s likely to be another two weeks before work is completed. A few more photographs of the work in progress can be viewed here: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4.

Churchyard grass-cutting
The churchyard has been looking neat and tidy since the big clean-up on three consecutive Saturdays last month. Now, in an attempt to build on the enthusiasm of the many volunteers, another working party is planned for 10am to 1pm on Saturday 15 July. The aim is to keep the grass mown and tidy up around the gravestones.
On that day a view will be taken on whether to do the same on the following Saturday (22 July) if there is any work still required.
Many thanks to Chris Wiggins and Linda Bumby who have recently been seen doing a bit of grass-cutting to help out.

Music at Junction 50
On Thursday 29 June the first concert of this year’s season of concerts will be staged. However, because work is required to the roof of St James’ Church in Baldersby St James, the venue has moved.
Accordionist Paul Chamberlain and violinist/saxophonist Michael Hayward will perform at St Lawrence Church in Carlton Miniott. The start of the concert will be delayed until 7.20pm to allow anyone who turns up at Baldersby St James time to travel from to Carlton Miniott.
Tickets £12 from 01765 640398 or collect from the Good Food Shop in Baldersby, or just come along and pay at the door.
Note: The work required at St James’ Church may be protracted and could mean future concerts in the series are also moved to an alternative venue.

Rural Arts at The Courthouse in Thirsk
Exhibitions
- Cafe artist of the month – July – Jenine Wardell – Saturday 1 to Monday 31 July – a contemporary artist originally from Greater Manchester, but now lives locally in Boroughbridge. Jenine loves to experiment with texture using whatever organic or recycled materials she can find, everything from wool to egg shells. She works in all mediums from oil, acrylic, textiles, glass and ceramics. Jenine is inspired by going out into various landscapes to discover the natural textures and colours found there. Images of Jenine’s work can be found on Facebook and Instagram, and her sculptures are on display at the Elm Gallery in Topcliffe.
- Fresh 2022 winner Eleanor Carney – Friday 7 July to Saturday 22 July – a two week exhibition of the artist’s work depicting a visual biography of living with the chronic disease, Crohn’s.
Performances
- NT Live Screening: Fleabag – Thursday 7 September at 7.30pm – written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) . Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life.
- A Midsummer Night’s Mischief – Thursday 3 August at 2.30pm – the fairies in the forest are starting a fight – but which side are you on? Team Titania or Team Oberon? Hoglets Theatre presents their interactive and larger-than-life version of Shakespeare’s summer comedy – especially for young audiences. Expect wild characters, raucous singalong songs, puppets, stunts and some frankly ridiculous disco dancing. Age guide 5+.
