Resurfacing on the A1(M) – Boroughbridge to Wetherby
The roadworks on the A1(M) southbound between junctions 48 (Boroughbridge) and 46 (Wetherby) continue through to July. There’ll be overnight closures every weeknight (Monday to Friday, 8pm–6am) with diversions via the A168 and B1224. Allow plenty of extra time for your journeys during these works.

Topcliffe roads closed – perfect heaven!
Peace and quiet descended on Topcliffe last Friday when North Yorkshire Council closed all main roads in the village to undertake ‘carriageway rejuvenation’ works. Apparently that is the term used for a new treatment used in Topcliffe for the first time in North Yorkshire. It involves applying a chemical followed by light gritting. The chemical is supposed to permeate through the existing tarmac and the reaction rejuvenates the structure, giving it an extra five to 10 years of useful life. The treatment only works on reasonable surfaces, like those we had in the village. It simply wouldn’t be feasible on pot-holed or poor surfaces.

But significant impact on village business
It’s good to know that our village roads may be in good condition for many years ahead, so thank you North Yorkshire Council. But maybe the council could learn from this exercise and implement their road closures more thoughtfully in other villages that get this treatment. It would be good to have more warning and better information about what is involved. It should consider approaching local businesses and organisations directly to warn them and to give them the opportunity to better plan how they will deal with the closures. I’m thinking here of shops, pubs, churches, surgeries, schools and fish & chip vans…all of which were badly affected here in Topcliffe. Some consultation and negotiation may have helped avoid things such as the school sports day having to be postponed, the Post Office having to close on its busiest day and The Angel having to cancel lunchtime opening. And better information might include an explanation of what the surface treatment involves. Many people were critical of the council for organising what appeared to be the resurfacing of roads that appeared to them to be in good condition: a bit of detail about the new process and how it works would have saved much criticism and might have gained the council some brownie points.

Topcliffe at centre of police chase crash

Anyone who managed to sleep through the commotion and sound of a helicopter swooping across Topcliffe last Wednesday night must be a very deep sleeper. The noise was very loud as police searched for two people who had been chased on the A1M and eventually came to a stop when their car crashed through Nigel Graham’s allotment and hit a house in East Lea.

Afterwards the police issued the following appeal:
Enquiries are ongoing to track down two suspects who fled from a Range Rover after crashing it into the side of a house in Topcliffe following a short police pursuit. The incident began at around 3.10am on Wednesday 17 June when a Roads’ Policing officer spotted the silver 4×4 travelling at speed on the north-bound A1(M) near Boroughbridge. The driver failed to stop, and a pursuit was authorised with support from a police helicopter.

The Range Rover came off the A1(M) and headed to Topcliffe. At 3.20am, officers found the vehicle embedded into the side of a house on East Lea with reports that a man and a woman had run from the scene. Thankfully, no-one in the property came to harm. Extensive searches were immediately carried out involving officers, a police dog, a drone and the helicopter. However, the man and woman have not yet been caught.

Enquiries are ongoing to trace them, including support from Cleveland Police where the Range Rover is registered. The vehicle has been recovered for forensic examination. Witnesses or anyone with CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage are urged to get in touch to support the investigation. Please call North Yorkshire Police on 101. If you would prefer to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or make an online report. The reference number to quote is 12260111681.

Thursday 18 June at 11am – Midweek Morning Prayer.
Sunday 21 June at 10.45am – Sung Matins.
Thursday 25 June at 11am – Midweek Morning Prayer.
Sunday 28 June at 10.45am – Holy Communion.

TONIGHT: Sunday 14 June – the quiz will take place at 8pm this evening in the Village Hall. All welcome.

Last week’s was an excellent quiz, with many local history questions and, strangely, a few about carrots. This was the first time Malc had presented a quiz since the event moved to the Village Hall! It was won by David, Doug and Peter. Well done the winners and everyone who took part.

Here’s a selection of questions from the quiz. See how you do, but apologies in advance to those who don’t know much about Topcliffe’s history. The answers are at the end of today’s email.

1. In what year did William de Percy build the Maiden’s Bower (fortified home) and take control of Topcliffe?
2. Who is the patron saint of Topcliffe parish church?
3. What does a village or town name ending in ‘by’ signify (ie as in Asenby or Sowerby)?
4. Where was Britain’s worst-ever recorded earthquake?
5. What does CNN stand for (in the USA)?
6. What was the first usable fully synthetic plastic?
7. Which country is fully surrounded by France, Germany and Belgium?
8. Who is the only man to have served as Vice-President and President of the USA without being elected to either role?
9. What is a baby hedgehog called?
10. What is the medical term for skin turned orange by eating too many carrots?

Asenby Parish Council
The Parish Council is hoping to fill a vacancy by co-opting a qualifying resident as soon as is practical. If you are interested in knowing more, or would like to be considered, please contact the Parish Clerk at clerk@asenbyparish.gov.uk or complete the form on the Asenby website:

Resurfacing on the A1(M) – Boroughbridge to Wetherby
Motorists should take note of these roadworks which could potentially create significant delays on the A1(M) southbound between junctions 48 (Boroughbridge) and 46 (Wetherby) through to July. There’ll be overnight closures every weeknight (Monday to Friday, 8pm–6am) with diversions via the A168 and B1224. Allow plenty of extra time for your journeys during these works.

Topcliffe village roads closed all day next Friday

Residents can’t have missed the preparations for the planned ‘carriageway rejuvenation’ works on Long Street (the A167) and Church and Front Streets, on Friday 19 June. The one-day work programme, which is weather dependent (ie if it is raining the work will be postponed) will include complete road closures within the village between 9am and 6pm. A fully signed diversion will be in place and on-site personnel will assist in managing access and egress from properties, however there may be periods when movement of vehicles will not be possible. There will be designated crossing points for pedestrians.

Anyone with any special access needs prior to the work starting should contact North Yorkshire Council on 0300 131 2131. Motorists are advised to make arrangements to park their vehicle in an alternative location if they plan to leave the village on this day after 9am.

Footnote:
Topcliffe Surgery will be open as normal throughout the day but patients are advised to be aware of the access difficulties that the road closure will cause.
Topcliffe Post Office will be closed all day. If there’s any change, there’ll be information posted on Top Residents’ Facebook page.
Topcliffe Church of England Academy has already postponed its sports day, which will now be held on Friday 10 July. Parents will generally be able to get their children to school before the 9am roadworks start time, but significant difficulties are expected at the end of the school day. Bus companies have been advised that there will be problems and that it is likely they will have to access Topcliffe on the afternoon via Busby Stoop. Parents are advised that car access will be very difficult, particularly on the afternoon and that they should be prepared to park up and walk through the village…or follow the diversions via Busby Stoop.

Riverside Path
Asenby Parish Council is seeking a small team of volunteers to help with minor maintenance activities along the riverside path between Topcliffe Bridge and Asenby. Although the grass along the riverside path is cut regularly by contractors there are sometimes smaller jobs that need attention such as cutting back small overhanging branches. The team would also monitor the condition of the path and report any more substantial issues to the Parish Council. If you are interested please contact Asenby Parish clerk – clerk@asenbyparish.gov.uk – for more details.

Thirsk Tourist Information Centre
If you’ve just retired and are looking for a new challenge and the opportunity to meet visitors to Thirsk as well as local people, you may be interested to know that Thirsk Tourist Information is on the lookout for a few more volunteers to join their team. They are a friendly group committed to promoting the area and helping visitors to enjoy all the interesting and exciting things that there are to do in and around Thirsk. If you’re interested please email Jo Caramello at jo@visitthirsk.uk or phone her on 07482 084643

Heritage event a great success

Last Sunday the weather was pleasantly warm (no wind or rain) as around 75 or more visitors joined in the various events arranged for the annual celebration of St Columba and our church’s heritage. Of these 50 enjoyed a delicious BBQ lunch, some generously bringing with them a wonderful array of salads and cakes to share. In the afternoon a steady stream of intrepid souls climbed the tower to visit the clock and bell chambers and admire the views from the very top after negotiating the final long ladder.

Meanwhile, an impromptu talk about the church’s historic silver, given by John Phillips, was very well received by a group of 20 or so who were initially challenged to pick the oldest of three chalices, which caused some lively debate!. An outline of the post-Reformation change to plain silver ‘Communion Cups’ was presented, revealing the oldest chalice to be circa 1638 from the reign of Charles I, closely followed by one of 1669 (Charles II). The third chalice was much more modern from 1956 (from a different Elizabethan age!) though, as pointed out by an astute member of the audience, had the oldest design from before the reformation! The day concluded with a goodly number joining the Choral Evensong with wine and more food to follow.

On the day an incredible £380 was raised for church funds. So, a very successful and enjoyable day all round and a huge thank you goes out to all those who worked so hard to make it happen, the grass cutters, cleaners, furniture shifters, tent erectors, flower planters and arrangers, cooks, waiters, servers and guides… and above, all the guests for joining in with their smiles and good company.

Soup & Sweet
The very last Soup and Sweet lunch at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall will be on Wednesday 24 June between 11.30am and 12.45pm.

So why not come give it a try and end your busy day with some glorious music, followed by a glass of wine?

Villagers invited to sign a Book of Condolence for Alanbrooke soldier
Last year in the run up to, and on Armistice Day itself, there was a significant strengthening of the friendship and relations between Topcliffe and the 4^th Royal Artillery Regiment based at Alanbrooke Barracks. Teams of soldiers busied themselves on maintenance tasks at St Columba’s churchyard and on Armistice Day over one-hundred troops marched from their barracks to a service in the church.

Not long after that, in January this year, one of the officers involved sadly died following an incident during live fire training in Northumberland. Capt Philip Gilbert Muldowney, aged just 25, served as a fire support team commander. He served in multiple roles and was deployed in November 2021 to Estonia for six months. He had been seriously injured on a commando course in January 2025 and ordered to pause and rehabilitate – but he quickly returned to duty after his recovery.

In tribute to Capt Muldowney, and in recognition of the friendship between the 4^th RA Regiment and the village, residents are being invited to sign a Book of Condolence. It will be available throughout the heritage events and services taking place at St Columba’s today (Sunday 7 June) and will then be placed in the entrance hall at the Village Hall so that those attending events over the next fortnight can sign it.

Asenby Bus Stop Library

New shelving has been added to bus stop library in Asenby. This has significantly increased the capacity for more books to be available to local readers. There’s now a dedicated children’s section as well!

Organiser Audrey Grimston hopes that everyone will enjoy the expanded facility, but she reminds villagers that no magazines, games, jigsaws, DVDs or videos are to be left there.

Asenby Parish Council Vacancy
North Yorkshire Council has received insufficient requests from eligible electors in Asenby for an election to fill the casual vacancy, created by the recent resignation of Tim Rawden. The Parish Council therefore intends to co-opt a duly qualified person to fill the vacancy as soon as is practical. If you are interested in knowing more, or would like to be considered, please contact the Parish Clerk at clerk@asenbyparish.gov.uk or complete the form on the Asenby website: Vacancy for Parish Councillor – Asenby Parish Council, Asenby, Thirsk

Resurfacing on the A1(M) – Boroughbridge to Wetherby
Motorists should take note of these roadworks which could potentially create significant delays on the A1(M) southbound between junctions 48 (Boroughbridge) and 46 (Wetherby). The work involves removing worn-out layers and replacing them with new asphalt. This resurfacing strengthens the road and will help prevent future deterioration.

7 June

Full overnight closure (8pm–6am) between J48 and J46
During the day, two out of three lanes will be closed between junctions 47 and 46. These closures are needed to allow materials to cure.
Delays are expected. Allow extra time for your journey

8 June – early July

Overnight closures every weeknight (Monday to Friday, 8pm–6am.
During these closures, other necessary maintenance and litter picking will take place.
Diversion Route: Traffic will be diverted via the A168 and B1224.

Delays are expected so allow plenty of extra time for your journeys during these works.

And road resurfacing in Topcliffe too!

Households in Topcliffe should have received a letter from North Yorkshire Council about planned ‘carriageway rejuvenation’ works on Long Street (the A167) and Church and Front Streets, on Friday 19 June. The one-day work programme will include complete road closures within the village between 9am and 6pm. A fully signed diversion will be in place and on-site personnel will assist in managing access and egress from properties, however there may be periods when movement of vehicles will not be possible. There will be designated crossing points for pedestrians.

Soup & Sweet
The next Soup and Sweet lunch at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall will be on Wednesday 10 June between 11.30am and 12.45pm. Everyone, of all ages from Topcliffe and Asenby and surrounding areas, is welcome to attend. There’s no set charge, but donations are welcome to help pay the rental cost of hiring the Village Hall and other unavoidable expenses.

Just a reminder that the Soup & Sweet lunches will end after the lunch on 24 June – so only two more to go!

The Elm Gallery
The Elm Gallery will be closed until Saturday 13 June.

It’s a ticket only event – only 450 tickets available – and bookings should be made online.

Summer Crime Prevention – Stay Safe & Secure
As we head into the warmer summer months, North Yorkshire Police is encouraging residents to stay vigilant and take simple steps to protect their homes and communities. With longer days, open windows, and more people away on holidays, opportunities for crime can increase, but a few small precautions can make a big difference:

Secure Your Home

Always lock doors and windows, even when you’re at home or in the garden.
Don’t leave valuables on display where they can be seen from outside.
Consider using timer switches for lights when you’re away.

Going Away?

Ask a trusted neighbour or friend to keep an eye on your property.
Cancel or redirect deliveries so parcels don’t build up on your doorstep.
Avoid advertising your holiday plans on social media until you return.

Protect Your Vehicle

Lock your car and remove all valuables, including loose sat navs and charging cables.
Park in well-lit, busy areas where possible.
Double-check that your vehicle is securely locked.

Stay Alert & Look Out for Others

Report any suspicious activity or unfamiliar behaviour in your area.
Get to know your neighbours and look out for one another.
Trust your instincts – if something doesn’t feel right, report it.

Report Concerns
Any suspicious activity in the area, please report it immediately. Call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Leeming noise warning!

There will be increased movement by aircraft on exercises operating from RAF Leeming from Monday 1 to Friday 12 June. The aerodrome will be hosting rotary aircraft for events which will include low and night flying. The commander of the Station apologies in advance for any noise inconvenience and says every effort will be made to keep the disturbance to a minimum.

The company has given notice that it will be replacing ageing water pipes in the village with the help of its partner, United Infrastructure, until the end of August. They then will change direction and move from Low Farm, through Sandhutton, to Busby Stoop. There will be ‘rolling’ traffic lights in place on the A167. These will start at Low Farm and move towards Newsham Road.

St Columba’s Festival and Heritage Day
The annual celebration of Columba, the Patron Saint of our parish church, and the church’s amazing heritage will take place on Sunday 7 June.

St Columba’s was founded between 635 and 640AD by King, later Saint, Oswald, meaning we are moving ever closer to beginning our 1400th anniversary celebrations in just nine years’ time. However, plans for this year’s celebration will be somewhat simpler, including the annual village BBQ in the church hall and churchyard, starting at 12.30pm, to which everyone is very warmly invited. Please take with you your preferred wine and soft drinks, though some will be available. And if you would like to take along a salad and/or cake to share that would be most kind and helpful.

Big events later in the year at the Village Hall
Here’s a reminder of two dates you may wish to put in your diary. They’re both big fundraisers for the Village Hall.

Chip & Dales
