Sunday Email: Issue 84

Welcome to the 84th issue of the Sunday Email. This edition brings you a report that a planned Christmas event in Asenby has been cancelled because of concerns about increasing numbers of Covid cases in recent days. It’s fully understandable that the organisers have taken this decision as no one wants to be responsible for spreading the disease and potentially creating the circumstances in which guests are infected.

On a personal note, because of rising Covid infection concerns, my siblings and I have just postponed our mother’s 100th birthday party, which was due to be held next Saturday. It’s a shame, but it is another example of how this disease continues to create havoc with our lives.

Christmas lunch places going well
As of Friday last, 18 places have been reserved for over the 65s Christmas lunch on Wednesday 15 December. The capacity on the day is 40, so anyone wanting to join in should get in touch soon as it’s first come, first served. The three-course lunch is being held in the Village Hall and it’s only £10 per person. Anyone aged 65 and over is very welcome to add their name to the list by calling Judith Lowe on 01845 577911.
Take your partners for Salsa and Bachata
A dozen people eager to learn salsa and bachata steps have put their names down for the first dance class on Saturday 20 November. But there’s space for a few more participants. The classes, which are being held at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall, are to be held between 6 and 8pm. A professional tutor will take the two-hour classes and he’ll guide you through the basic dance moves. There’s no need to worry about your current ability, everything will be broken down into steps to make sure everyone can follow. There’ll be an hour of salsa and an hour of bachata. You can stay for both or just one. Cost: £5 for one hour or £7.25 for two. Bring your own drink. For more information and to book your place call Joanne Brierley on 07732 941758.
No Boccia this week
Those who attend the Boccia class in the Village Hall are asked to note that there will be no session this coming Tuesday, 16 November. Sessions will resume as normal the following week.
It was a Christmas Cracker!
Congratulations to Karen Morley and Linda Carver for arranging an extremely successful Christmas Fair held yesterday in Topcliffe and Asenby Village Hall. There was a brilliant buzz about the building with over a dozen stalls and lots and lots of shoppers – certainly more than 100. And with everything from art to woodturning and baubles to home baking there really was something for everyone.

Thanks to the stallholders, the shopper spending as well as the tea, coffee, cake and sausage butty counter, £356 was raised. Karen and Linda want this to go to projects to enhance Topcliffe Village so watch out for news on that in the coming months.

Asenby Mulled Wine & Mince Pie Evening cancelled
Last week, notices appeared on various Facebook pages about plans for this year’s Christmas event in Asenby. But in the light of increasing Covid cases locally, the decision has been taken to cancel it. Here’s a statement from one of the organisers, Siobhan Gifford:

"We are all keen to get our lives back to normal and to socialise with our friends and neighbours in the way that we once used to take for granted, so it is with great regret that Asenby Institute has decided to cancel the Asenby Mulled Wine & Mince Pie Evening which was due to be held in Asenby Hall on 12 December.

This (previously) annual event has always been a resounding success giving villagers the opportunity to have a chat over a warming glass of Christmas cheer. The Christmas raffle at the event has also been well supported by villagers and local businesses and has helped to raise a significant amount of money which, for the last three years, has been donated to Herriot Hospice Homecare.

Sadly, the organisers feel that the number of people who attend this event means that they couldn’t operate any form of social distancing or offer a guarantee to keep everyone safe in these troubled times. At the time Asenby Institute committee took the decision to cancel, Covid numbers have shown a troubling increase. Hopefully this is only a brief blip but it is a reminder that we still need to be cautious about mingling.

The committee would like to thank everyone who has been so encouraging in their support of this event and very much hope that we will be able to get together over a glass of mulled wine in 2022.

It’s located in the committee room at the rear of the main hall and you can visit it any Tuesday afternoon between 1.30 and 3.30pm, or during activity session with the approval of the event organiser.

Just recently, Sheila Laws has done a brilliant job of tidying up the shelves and putting all the books in alphabetical order by author.

The Password Problem
Whether it’s Facebook, Amazon or Netflix accounts, the explosion in popularity of online apps and services means more and more of us have to remember an increasingly long list of passwords. Unfortunately, some of people cope with this challenge by resorting to practices that leave their data, devices and money at risk – by using the same password across multiple accounts, or by creating simple passwords that could easily be guessed by hackers. Bad password practice is more prevalent than most people might think – the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre carried out analysis of passwords leaked in data breaches and found that more than 23 million users worldwide used 123456 as a password. LATEST INFORMATION & NEWS ABOUT COVID
The week’s Covid statistics

  • 50.5 million first doses given. 46 million second doses. 87.9% of the population aged 12+ has now had the first jab and over 80% the second.
  • 12.1million have now had a booster or third jab. That’s 21% of those eligible.
  • There were 38,351 new Covid infections yesterday and 256,207 people tested positive in the last week. That’s an 0.4% increase on the previous week.
  • 8,652 people were admitted to hospital with Covid in the week to 9 November and 999 patients were taking up ventilation beds.
  • There were 157 deaths reported yesterday and 1,092 in the last seven days.
  • The total number of UK deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test now stands at 142,835.
  • 165,534 deaths registered in the UK had Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.
  • Worldwide, there have been 247 million infections and the global death toll is 5,108,672.
Prevalence of Covid infections in England
The Office of National Statistics regularly tests a sample of the population for Covid and on 30 October (the latest date information is available for) it estimated that the number and age of people with Covid was:

  • Age 2 to School Year 6 – 1 in 27
  • School Year 7 to Year 11 – 1 in 16
  • School Year 12 to Age 24 – 1 in 67
  • Age 25 to Age 34 – 1 in 122
  • Age 35 to Age 49 – 1 in 63
  • Age 50 to Age 69 – 1 in 78
  • Age 70+ – 1 in 115

The main current problem lies in the secondary schools, hence the push to get pupils vaccinated. It helps them, and reduces the chance of spreading the illness out of school.

That’s all for this week. Keep safe and remain well.

Sunday Email: Issue 83

Welcome to the 83rd issue of the Sunday Email.

You’ll see some changes to the format and focus of this week’s email. It was the Covid pandemic that first led to my publishing the email and information about the disease and its impact on our lives has always been prominent at the front of the weekly message.

However, the Sunday email has evolved to include news about things happening locally and issues that might be of interest. Whilst acknowledging that Covid is still around, I think we have reached a point when it is less of a concern than it has been. Now that most adults have been double-jabbed and even had a booster – and many young people have had at least one vaccination – people generally are trying to get back to a more normal routine whilst, of course, continuing to take reasonable precautions and taking personal responsibility for their actions.

So, I will continue to present Covid data and information that I think might be useful, but it will be less prominent in the email. Of course, if the worse comes to the worst and we head back in to lockdowns, the order of things will be be reconsidered again.

Thirsk Christmas Lights
We all get pleasure out of trips to Thirsk when the Market Place is festooned in Christmas lights, but it costs an arm and a leg to put on the show each year. That’s why so many people try to raise funds to make the show such a success! Last week, Topcliffe resident Jane Colls raised £146 from the sale of Crocheted Pumpkins, which many of her friends in the village purchased…and more were sold from the Arty Party shop in Thirsk. Jane is part of Thirsk Yarnbombers who are now selling Christmas decorations at various locations in Thirsk and also via Topcliffe Post Office. They are also having a Christmas craft stall on Thirsk Market on Saturday 4 December. Look out for them and please give them your support.

LATEST INFORMATION & NEWS ABOUT COVID
The week’s Covid statistics

  • 50.2 million first doses given. 45.8 million second doses. 87.3% of the population aged 12+ has now had the first jab and over 79.7% the second.
  • 9.6 million have now had a booster or third jab. That’s 16.8% of those eligible.
  • There were 30,693 new Covid infections yesterday and 255,241 people tested positive in the last week. That’s an 11% decrease on the previous week.
  • 7,241 people were admitted to hospital with Covid between 31 October and 5 November- that’s a 3% increase on the previous week.
  • There were 155 deaths reported yesterday and 1,186 in the last seven days.
  • The total number of UK deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test now stands at 141,743.
  • 164,491 deaths registered in the UK had Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.
  • Worldwide, there have been 247 million infections and the global death toll is 5,057,619.
Book a booster sooner
The NHS in England is changing the booking system to allow people to book their booster jab a month before they are eligible from Monday. Health authorities hope this will speed up the booster rollout. Currently, anyone eligible who had their second dose of vaccine six months ago can only book their top-up once those six months are up. The update means that people can pre-book an appointment after five months, allowing them to roll up their sleeve on the day they reach the six-month milestone.
That’s all for this week. Keep safe and remain well.

Advice from the top
Professor Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer for England recently tweeted the following message:
"COVID-19 cases are rising and winter is drawing closer.
1) If you have not been vaccinated, now is the time.
2) If you are offered a booster please take up the offer.
3) Ventilation, masks in crowded indoor spaces and hand washing remain important."
Current international travel rules
From 4am tomorrow the Covid travel red list will be empty! From that time the last seven countries classed as red will be removed, meaning passengers arriving from them will no longer have to pay for a 10-day quarantine in a hotel. While there will be no red nations left, the red list will remain in place as a precautionary measure and countries could be added if needed.

Vaccinated or not, travellers are no longer required to take a PCR test two days after arrival, following a rule change on October 24 which means they can take a cheaper lateral flow test instead. There’s also no need for fully vaccinated travellers to take a Covid test before setting off, after a relaxation of the rules on 4 October.

Unvaccinated people are still required to quarantine for ten days at home, no matter which foreign country they are returning from. They are also required to take coronavirus tests, either a PCR or lateral flow, in the three days before travelling to the UK, another on or before day two and again on or after day eight after returning.

Finally, travellers are also advised to check entry requirements of their destination countries before they book.

Oldies Christmas Lunch
Plans are being put together for the annual Christmas lunch for the elderly folk within our community. It will be held in the Village Hall on Wednesday 15 December and participants can look forward to a welcome drink, a three course Christmas lunch with wine…and a very merry atmosphere. All for just £10 a head. The organisers have started to collect the names of those who would like to attend. Anyone aged 65 and over is very welcome to add their name to the list by calling Judith Lowe on 01845 577911. There’s a maximum of forty places available so it’ll be first come, first served.
Take to the floor for Salsa and Bachata
The range of events taking place at our Village Hall is impressive and continues to expand! The latest news is that a salsa and bachata session will start this month, bringing a touch of the exotic to Topcliffe. The first two-hour session will be held on Saturday 20 November starting at 6pm.

A professional tutor will take the classes and he’ll guide you through the basic moves of salsa and bachata. There’s no need to worry about your current ability, everything will be broken down into steps to make sure everyone can follow. The two-hour session includes an hour of salsa and an hour of bachata. You can stay for both or just one. For more information and to book your place call Joanne Brierley on 07732 941758.

Soup and sweet lunch
There’ll be a soup and sweet lunch next Wednesday, 10 November at 12 noon. There’s no set charge for lunch but customers are asked to make a small donation. Money raised goes to a different charity each time and on this occasion will be donated to help support the Jennyruth workshops in Ripon. The last lunch raised £124.50 for The Royal British Legion.
Community Works Christmas parcels
Last year Community Works organised a highly successful appeal for food donations which were parcelled-up to be delivered to the needy in and around Thirsk. In all, 192 Christmas food parcels were packed and delivered by 50 volunteers and it’s thought that over 500 people benefitted. This year the charity is planning a similar event and is again asking for food donations and looking for volunteers to help out. Parcels will be delivered door to door on 21 December, just in time for the festive season. Call 01845 524494 to offer your help. Donations can be delivered to the charity’s base at Church Hall, St James Green, Thirsk.
Local food bank collections continue
For many months the Milk Churn Farm Shop has had a food collection box to support Community Works in Thirsk and the scheme has been a tremendous success. Now Topcliffe Post Office, which is part of the same village business, is also acting as a collection point. The Post Office has hessian bags that can be taken away and returned containing food donations. The bags also contain details of the types of food in greatest demand, and other information about other ways people can help Community Works.
Milk Churn Farm Shop – revised opening hours
As winter approaches, the Farm Shop has revised its opening hours and is now closed on Sundays
Wreath-making at the Milk Churn
To cope with the extra demand for places at the wreath making event an additional session has been organised on Saturday 13 November between 1 and 3pm (the 6 November session is now fully booked). You’ll be able to make a bespoke Christmas wreath using hoops, feathers and other natural materials. Mulled wine, hot drinks and mince pies will be served. Book your place for £32.50 by calling 01845 400446.
Police, Crime & Fire Service Plans – have your say
There’s just one week left to give your views on the Police and Crime Plan and Fire and Rescue Plan for North Yorkshire. The consultation closes on Sunday 7 November. Despite the vacancy in the elected position of Commissioner, the team in the Office of the Commissioner want to ensure everyone has their say so that whoever is elected as the new Commissioner knows the views of residents. Have your say at: http://www.opinionresearch.co.uk/nypfcc

Note: The election for a new Police, Fire & Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire will be held on Thursday 25 November.

Grants you’d be MaD to miss!
Hambleton District Council has launched it’s Making a Difference funding scheme and has £250,000 on offer as grants to community projects. The fund helps local groups across the district deliver projects they cannot afford to fund themselves. Sometimes the amount awarded may be small but the difference to the community can be massive.

Thirsk and its surrounding villages have access to £50,000 (Bedale, Easingwold, Northallerton and Stokesley have similar amounts). Applications, which can be submitted up to Sunday 5 December, should be for £2,000 or more and must be supported by the local ward councillor. Cabinet Members will give final approval for accepted schemes in March 2022. For more visit http://hambleton.gov.uk/madgrants

Well done Topcliffe Surgery
Topcliffe Surgery has been named as one of the best in Yorkshire when dealing with appointments. In a GP Patient Survey conducted by Ipsos MORI, over 72% of Topcliffe patients said their experience was very good and nearly 24% said it was fairly good. There were 256 survey forms sent out to patients at Topcliffe Surgery and the response rate was 57 per cent.

Topcliffe results were in line with those for Yorkshire surgeries generally, with the majority of patients (71 per cent) reporting a good experience booking an appointment. It would seem that patients’ satisfaction with booking a GP appointment is on the rise, despite a public row brewing over whether doctors are seeing enough people face-to-face.

iCan one to ones
Here’s a chance to sort out your technical glitches, learn new skills or get your device set up and running with friendly iPad and Tablet expert Claire Ford. You can book more than one session if you have a lot to cover. The 30-minute sessions are between 1pm-4pm on Saturday 6 November at Rural Arts, The Courthouse, Thirsk. Tickets priced at £15 per half hour session bookable online at www.ruralarts.org
Sporting Memories Foundation club planned at Thirsk Community Library
Thirsk Community Library, with funds secured from Thirsk Co-op, is planning to start a Sporting Memories Foundation (SMF) club. For over ten years SMF has been using the power of remembering and talking about sport – along with physical exercise and social activities – to tackle dementia, depression, loneliness or other long-term conditions. At the moment, the nearest clubs are at Bedale, Northallerton and York, so having a local club should be very beneficial.

The organisers are looking for present or past sports participants, who would be willing to support the weekly club in the library, probably on a Wednesday morning. All that is needed is willingness to share your experiences of sport with older members of the community who are no longer able to actively participate but continue to have a passionate interest in sport

Anyone interested should email Helen Ashworth – helen@communityworks.uk or call 07826 335255. For more information about SMF clubs and the tremendous work they do, follow this link.

Both Parish Councils meet at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall.

There’ll be a wide range of interesting stalls, including crafts, lampshades, cakes and bakes, Christmas cards, calendars, decoupage, upcycling, gift wrap and coasters. There should be lots of great ideas for Christmas presents.

Linda and Karen will be providing two stalls themselves – one selling home-baked cakes and another selling homemade produce. They would welcome any donations from the many talented bakers and preserves bottlers in the village. Refreshments including, sausage sandwiches (and a vegetarian version) will be on sale.

Funds raised on the day will go towards a range of initiatives aimed at improving Topcliffe, such as bulb planning and possibly a new bench.

All Souls Service at St Columba’s – 2 November
To celebrate the Feast of All Souls, St Columba’s will be holding a Choral Requiem Mass at 7.30pm on Tuesday 2 November. The service will be taken by the Rev’d Canon Keith Punshon, formerly of Ripon Cathedral. During the service there will be the opportunity to remember people by name or, if preferred, silently by the placing of names on the altar. Although names of people to be remembered can be brought to the church on the night, it would be helpful if they could be submitted by email in advance to John Phillips at johnphillips05@gmail.co.uk As the community emerges from the Covid pandemic this service will be particularly relevant and poignant.

  • 162,620 deaths registered in the UK had Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.
  • Worldwide, there have been 244 million infections and the global death toll is 4,957,756.
Worrying picture as Covid cases rise again
Although more than four million individuals have now had a booster jab iaround 14% of people in the UK aged over 12 are still unvaccinated.

Now that the number of daily infections is increasing again – this week hitting over 50,000 a day – calls for action on the so-called Plan B with tighter restrictions, are being made. So far SAGE, the government’s scientific advisory group, the British Medical Association and the NHS Confederation have called on the government for stricter rules.

In September the government said it would bring in extra measures if necessary to protect the NHS from unsustainable pressure. These could include better communication about the level of risk, and the need to behave more cautiously as well as Introducing mandatory Covid passports, making face coverings mandatory again and advising people to work from home.

These proposals would only bring England effectively in line with restrictions still in place in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Right now, the government is resisting any changes.

Information for Topcliffe Surgery patients (no change to information)
The surgery is rapidly moving through the age groups to ensure people have their Covid booster and flu jabs. This week it will be the turn of people over 65 and under 65s who are at high risk. Topcliffe Surgery is working together with other Hambleton GPs surgeries to offer the jabs from one location – Northallerton High School. No vaccinations are being given at Topcliffe Surgery. If you are contacted by Topcliffe Surgery you will be invited to Northallerton to get both jabs at the same time.

If you are contacted by the NHS vaccination booking service and accept their invitation, they’ll only give you a Covid booster jab and you’ll have to travel to Darlington, Knaresborough or York to receive it. You’d still need to go via the surgery to get your flu vaccination at Northallerton. So, If you wish, you can ignore the NHS invitation and await an invitation via the surgery, so that you can have both jabs together.

Please let the surgery know if you are over 65 (or high risk) and have already received your Covid booster jab through the National Booking Service but still require a flu jab.

Flu jabs at Tesco and Boots
Winter flu jabs are available at both Tesco and Boots in Thirsk. Vaccinations are free to those who are eligible and a charge will be made to others who want the jab. Appointments must be made via their websites.
Applications sought for Topcliffe Charities grants
There are two charitable funds which come under the direction of the feoffees or trustees of the Charities of Topcliffe:
● The Topcliffe Poor Fund which gives grants to each village in relation to their population. This fund derives its income from the rent on two pieces of land owned by the charity, one in Topcliffe and the other in Firby, near Bedale. Each village is allocated a proportion of funds according to population.
● The Topcliffe Educational Fund offers grants to further education students to purchase study books or other educational aids agreed by the feoffees. This fund derives its income from the interest on capital investments, but as interest rates at present are very low, the amount that is available is quite limited. The value of any single grant depends not only on the funds available to distribute but also on the number of successful applications. This fund is not allocated according to the applicant’s financial position.

Applications can be submitted at any time but the feoffees only meet in late November each year to approve grants. Anyone seeking further information or wishing to apply should contact the Secretary Mrs Rosemary Hart at hartjre

Each of the villages has its own nominated feoffees. Anne-Marie Barningham and Doug Allan represent Topcliffe and Carole Ford represents Asenby.

School children take action on the environment
School children at Topcliffe Academy have been undertaking a wide range of activities aimed at helping the environment and highlighting the threat that thoughtless actions can have on our lives. A synopsis of their work can be viewed in their school newsletter. All of the activities demonstrate an amazing understanding of some real issues facing our community…and the wider world.

And Year 2 children have written notes about their recent litter picking in Topcliffe. You can read them here.

Information for Topcliffe Surgery patients

Travel update
New rules allowing travellers returning to England to take lateral flow tests instead of more expensive PCR tests will come into force next Sunday, 24 October. The changes will take effect in time for families returning from half term breaks. Fully vaccinated passengers will be told to upload photos of their Covid-19 tests for verification. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said it would make travel easier and simpler. The changes come as the UK continues to record the highest level of Covid infections and deaths in western Europe, with another 45,066 cases recorded on Thursday alone – the largest number on a single day since late July.
Soup and sweet lunch
The next soup and sweet lunch will be held on Wednesday, 27 October at 12 noon. There’s no set charge for lunch but customers are asked to make a small donation. Money raised goes to a different charity each time and on this occasion will be donated to help support The British Legion. The last lunch raised £64 for Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall.
Topcliffe Tidy Up Day a huge success

Topcliffe is looking a lot cleaner and neater following a massive tidy up yesterday. Around thirty volunteers, including a number of youngsters, gave up their Saturday morning to tackle a few jobs that needed attention. They included the painting of much of the fence along the left-hand side of Station Road from The Swan to the school, clearance of overgrown trees and bushes at Jubilee Gardens, repainting of the woodwork at the cemetery shelter, cleaning of all road signs and litter picking throughout the village.

Parish councillors Ben Collard, Malcolm Morley and Roy Beckwith organised the tidy-up event and were extremely pleased with the turnout and the tremendous community effort to improve the village. They offered a big thank you to everyone who helped out. After a morning’s hard graft the volunteers headed off to the village hall where the parish council provided bacon sandwiches, cakes and drinks.
