Easter Family Fun Day at The Angel
It’s been a few years since The Angel was last able to organise a Family Fun Day’ – but the event is back and this year promises a day to keep all of the village’s ‘Little Angel’s’ delighted. It will be held on Easter Monday (18 April) from 1 until 5pm. The entry fee is just £3.50 per child with free entry for adults and children under-two. See poster here. There’ll be a BBQ available until 5pm, offering superb value for the whole family.
Scarecrow Festival – only two weeks to go!
Here’s a reminder that the Platinum Jubilee Scarecrow Festival will be held in Topcliffe and Asenby, as well as other local villages, over the Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday 30 April to Monday 2 May. The scarecrow trail is being organised jointly by the Friends of Carlton Miniott School and the Friends of Topcliffe School.

All you have to do is create a scarecrow or group of scarecrows with a royal theme and display them in front of your home or in your garden over the designated weekend. All the details about registering an entry, joining the scarecrow trail and fundraising can be viewed here.

At the next stage, more information, including a map showing the location of all the scarecrows in all of the villages, will be available from Topcliffe Post Office and the Milk Churn Farm Shop.

Don’t forget Ukraine
Please don’t forget that local volunteers are still wanting donations. Sadly, the Ukraine invasion isn’t stopping and the people of this country under siege still need our help. The Yorkshire to Ukraine depot at Unit 7, Martree Business Park, Sowerby will be open again next Wednesday (20 April) to accept donations of aid. The important things still needed are hygiene products, sanitary wear, baby milk, baby bottles, baby nappies and wipes, children’s colouring books and crayons, children’s entertainment, warm clean clothing, dried foods, tinned foods.
Soup & sweet lunch
The next soup and sweet lunch will be held at the Village Hall on Wednesday 27 April at 12 noon. Donations raised at this lunch will go to the Blue Cross – the animal rescue centre in Topcliffe. The last lunch raised a whopping £122.50 for Animal Crew Rescue.
More trees planted in Topcliffe
Last week three more trees were planted at the Sheepwash. Two copper beech trees, kindly donated to the village by Nicky and Chris James, who live on Long Street, and a cheery tree provided by Karen and Malcolm Morley have been added to other recent plantings by the Parish Council. Well done everyone concerned.
Knit and Natter
The next Knit & Natter session at the Milk Churn Farm Shop will be on Wednesday 20 April between 1.30 and 3.30pm. It doesn’t matter how experienced you are, this is about enjoying an afternoon chatting and maybe trying something different whilst making new friends, or meeting old ones. A drink and cake is included in the price of £3. Bring your knitting or crocheting and share your knowledge or just come along to natter. Please ring the shop to confirm your seat 01845 400446.
Comedy Night at The Angel
The next Hilarity Bites Comedy Club will be held at The Angel on Tuesday 3 May. Doors open 7.30pm and show starts at 8pm. Tickets £10 in advance and £12 on day of the show. Call 01845 578000.
Race Night
In April 2020, just as the pandemic was at its worst and we were all in lockdown for the first time, plans for a Race Night at the Village Hall had to be put on ice. Many people had handed over cash to name a horse in the race and the money was retained as it was hoped that that the racing would be rescheduled fairly quickly. Two years on, possible dates to hold the event are being looked at, but sorting out a new date is proving difficult – partly because of continuing high levels of Covid, but mainly because the two key race technicians, who make the whole night work professionally and smoothly, are not available. However, Saturday 10 September has being pencilled in the diary so hopefully the event will go ahead then. Naturally, those who paid to name a horse will appear on the race listings, whenever the race takes place. There’ll be more information nearer the time.
Latest on Asenby parish elections
As reported in recent Sunday Emails, no one put their name forward to stand as a councillor on Asenby Parish Council. The new deadline for nominations to be handed in to the council offices in Harrogate is 4pm on Thursday 28 April. If there is still less than the required quorum (3 nominations), Harrogate Borough councillors will be appointed to make up the shortfall and manage village affairs.

Be alert to latest scam
Is there no end to the lengths that fraudsters will go to in order to steal our money? This latest attempt at defrauding a Northallerton resident is just unbelievable. North Yorkshire Police say a member of the public received a call on his mobile from his wife’s mobile number, on answering the call a male with a foreign sounding accent introduced himself as a doctor from the Friarage Hospital. He stated that the man’s wife had been in a car accident and required emergency surgery but that the procedure she required was not covered under NHS budgets so a payment was urgently required. The truth is, of course, the fraudster was simply wanting the target’s bank details. When the husband said he was immediately heading for the hospital the fraudster hung up. The man called his wife and happily there had been no accident and she was fit and well.

The incident has been referred to Action Fraud and NYPs Economic Crime Unit for further investigation, as the perpetrators appear to be using sophisticated methods to link two mobile numbers together, in order to achieve the necessary impact, to fulfil their scam. This incident was distressing for the parties involved, but luckily no bank details were given out. If you do receive such a call, please don’t fall for the fraud, but contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

Textile recycling – start cleaning out those cupboards

Death of an Asenby character
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of well-known and much loved Asenby resident, James Halliday. James was often seen walking between his home in Asenby and Topcliffe where he was a regular at the Swan and the Angel. He passed away on Tuesday afternoon whilst tinkering in his garden doing what he most enjoyed. Condolences are sent to all his family and friends. There’ll be an obituary in the next edition of The Tattler.
Yorkshire to Ukraine
The war in Ukraine goes on and the people continue to suffer the most dreadful conditions. Many here will have donated cash and much-needed items already, but more is urgently needed now. The next articulated lorry (the 5th so far), is due to leave Sowerby for Poland this coming week and there’s space for anything that you can spare. Among the items most needed are dried foods, nappies, baby wipes, sanitary wear, hygiene products, children’s games and colouring books/crayons, torches and batteries. Any donations can be dropped off at Topcliffe Post Office or taken directly to Unit 7, Martree Business Park, Soweby, YO7 3HF (opposite Aldi).
Topcliffe Parish Council candidates announced
The candidates standing for election in the Topcliffe parish election have been announced. They are: Roy Beckwith, Chris Bumby, Paul Bumby, Ben Collard, Jamie Moores and Debbie Roberts.

As there are six candidates and just five seats, there will have to be an election. It will be held on Thursday 5 May. Voting will take place at the Village Hall.

Asenby Parish Council
It was hoped that fresh faces would step forward to manage village affairs but no nominations were received for places on Asenby Parish Council. The present councillors will remain in charge until the official hand over at the AGM, scheduled for Wednesday 18 May. Then these members of the Parish Council will all stand down after many years of serving their community. After that the Parish Council will not be able to function.

It is expected that Harrogate Borough Council will again seek nominations and arrange a further election at a date to be agreed. Unless at least three candidates come forward, which would make it quorate, Harrogate councillors will be appointed to run village affairs. The absence of local residents as parish councillors is most unfortunate for the village and a real knock for local democracy.

Voting deadlines imminent
To vote in the elections on 5 May, you must be on the electoral register by Thursday 14 April 2022. Those who are 18 or over on polling day, should be making sure they are registered to vote. Help with electoral registration is available at Hambleton District Council (for Topcliffe residents) and at Harrogate Borough Council (for Asenby residents). Those who are on the electoral register will have received a polling card in recent weeks.
Asenby News – Issue 9
Young Oliver Robertson has produced the ninth issue of his local newsletter for Asenby. It’s full of interesting bits of information, jokes and puzzles. You can read it here.
Don’t fall for Cadbury giveaway scam
Anybody on WhatsApp or with a Facebook page may recently have seen a message purporting to come from the chocolate company Cadbury suggesting that free chocolate can be obtained by following a link. It’s a scam, so don’t fall for it.

North Yorkshire Police have issued a warning saying that within the last week or two a number of people have fallen victim to the scam. Recipients of the message are sent a link from a friend which claims to offer a free chocolate product, such as an Easter chocolate hamper. The message is a phishing scam, where the fraudster aims to obtain personal details of the victim. Cadbury has made it clear that the offer is not genuine and social media users should be extra careful to avoid being scammed.
* If you receive a similar message – delete it and don’t open the link.
* If you have opened the message, don’t provide any information.
* If you have provided information, which includes your financial information, contact your bank.

The eggs are hidden throughout the two villages and youngsters have to follow the clues and find all the eggs…including a special golden egg. Entry forms cost £1.50 (this is a suggested donation but you can pay more or less depending on your circumstances) and they will be available on the day from the Milk Churn Farm Shop. All completed forms should be returned to the farm shop where they’ll be entered in a prize draw for the Big Easter Bunny’s Chocolate Hamper. The day has been organised by The Friends of Topcliffe School in conjunction with the Milk Churn Farm Shop. See poster here.

The house sparrow continues to be the most numerous garden bird, with blue tits and starlings coming in at second and third. The top ten was completed by the wood pigeon, blackbird, robin, goldfinch, great tit, magpie and chaffinch.
Got any old paper notes at home?
If you have any old paper £20 or £50 notes at home please be aware that there’s only six months left before they stop being legal tender. The Bank of England has urged people to spend or deposit these old notes before they stop being legal tender. The Bank is replacing the paper notes with more durable plastic ones featuring artist JMW Turner and mathematician Alan Turing. More than £17bn worth of paper notes remain in circulation. After 30 September, people will not be able to use the paper notes for payments in shops and other businesses, though anyone with a UK bank account will still be able to deposit them into their account.

LATEST INFORMATION & NEWS ABOUT COVID
Covid guidance
Now that free testing has been scrapped for the majority of people in England a new set of guidance has been issued on what to do if you have Covid symptoms or if you’ve tested positive for the virus. The focus is on treating coronavirus as if it’s any other respiratory infection, like flu or a common cold.

There are now no rules on isolating if you get Covid, only guidance. If you have Covid symptoms, and a high temperature or do not feel well enough to carry on as normal, try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people. You can still leave your home, but guidance recommends wearing a face covering, avoiding crowded spaces, avoiding exercise indoors or in crowded spaces, covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze, and washing hands. The same advice stands for avoiding giving others you live with your infection, as well as opening windows for ventilation and regularly cleaning surfaces.

Covid symptoms

Nine new signs of illness have been added to the official list of symptoms – long after the World Health Organisation and other countries extended their lists. The traditional symptoms of a fever, new or persistent cough and loss or change in taste or smell have been extended to include shortness of breath, – feeling tired or exhausted, an aching body, a headache, a sore throat, a blocked or runny nose, loss of appetite, diarrhea and feeling or being sick.

From April 1, those not classed as vulnerable have had to pay for a lateral flow test in order to find out if they have the virus or not. This change came as the number of cases of Covid reached record levels last week.

The week’s UK Covid statistics
• 52.9 million first doses given – that’s 91.9% of the population aged 12+.
• 49.5 million second doses given – that’s over 86.1%.

Sunday Email: Issue 102

Welcome to the 102nd issue of the Sunday Email.

In the Covid section at the end of this email, the latest statistics are provided and there’s an article indicating that free lateral flow testing has now ended. It’s really quite worrying that these two things have clashed. On the same day free tests stopped being provided the number of UK Covid cases was 4.9 million, the highest weekly figure ever recorded.

Platinum Jubilee Scarecrow Festival
Pre-Covid the Friends of Carlton Miniott School staged an extremely successful Scarecrow Festival with lots of great exhibitions throughout the village…and tremendous fun for everyone who took part and visited the scarecrow trail. Well, this year the Friends of Topcliffe School will help extend the initiative to Topcliffe and Asenby as part of the two villages’ Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The villages of Skipton-on-Swale, Sandhutton and Catton are also getting involved.

The festival will be staged on the Bank Holiday weekend Saturday 30 April to Monday 2 May.

The theme, not surprisingly, will be royalty, so there’s lots of opportunity to create an individual or group of scarecrows reflecting the monarchy, royal family…and even the corgis! You can register your scarecrow free of charge and request an information pack from FOS

The poster recently posted on Facebook can be viewed here:
https://www.facebook.com/1670647703190754/posts/3105495006372676/?d=n

At the next stage, more information, including a map showing the location of all the scarecrows in all of the villages, will be available from Topcliffe Post Office and the Milk Churn Farm Shop.

Over £700 raised at Lent lunches
The four lunches held in the Village Hall during Lent raised an amazing £704 for the Christian Aid Ukraine Appeal. The organisers have asked me to offer a big thank you to everyone who assisted at the lunches, and particularly those who attended and showed fantastic generosity throughout Lent.
Traditional soup & sweet lunches return
Now that Lent is over, the normal soup and sweet lunches will be returning on alternate Wednesdays, with the next one on 13 April at 12 noon. Donations raised at this lunch will go to Animal Rescue Crew, which cares for animals in this country and abroad.
Knit and Natter!
Don’t forget, the first Knit & Natter session is on at the Milk Churn Farm Shop this Wednesday afternoon between 1.30 and 3.30pm. Knit & Natter will be held every Wednesday.
Baldersby St James Church – Drop In and Chat
Every Tuesday 10am to 12 noon in the café area at the back of church. Drop in for a chat, book swap or have a quiet sit at the jigsaw table. The first two events have been very well attended. Best of all its free, but you might have to make your own coffee!
Easter Egg Hunt
Get ready for the big Easter egg hunt taking place in Topcliffe and Asenby on Easter Saturday,16 April. To find the eggs hidden throughout the two villages you have to follow the clues and find all the eggs…including a special golden egg. Entry forms cost £1.50 (this is a suggested donation but you can pay more or less depending on your circumstances) and they will be available on the day from the Milk Churn Farm Shop. All completed forms should be returned to the farm shop where they’ll be entered in a prize draw for the Bid Easter Bunny’s Chocolate Hamper. The day has been organised by The Friends of Topcliffe School in conjunction with the Milk Churn Farm Shop. See poster here.
Make a difference to policing In our area
North Yorkshire Police are looking for members of the public to join the county’s first ever Independent Advisory Group – a panel of volunteers who can express their opinion on policing matters on behalf of communities. The aim of the group is to improve local policing, with volunteers acting as a vital link between communities and the police. Members will be invited to provide feedback and opinions on issues such as critical incidents, operational practices and planning, force policies and procedures and the impact they may have. The feedback and guidance will help shape policing response, benefiting local communities and beyond.

There won’t be lengthy monthly meetings or anything like that. It’s a virtual group so everything will be done via email, surveys or online. Anyone interested can email iag to say why they’d like to take part, give a summary of their experience, interests and links to their community. Please also include your location, so the police can contact you on the matters that affect your community the most.

Parish council candidates
The deadline for submission of nomination papers for candidates for parish elections in Asenby and Topcliffe closed last Tuesday evening and we now await notification from Harrogate and Hambleton councils of who has put themselves forward. According to Harrogate’s timetable, publication of the ‘statement of persons nominated’ will be published no later than 4pm on Wednesday 6 April. Presumably it is the same for Hambleton. Hopefully, the names of candidates in both parishes will be available to include in next week’s Sunday Email.
Harrogate councillor for Asenby resigns
Bernard Bateman MBE, the long-standing local councillor for Harrogate’s Wathvale ward, which includes Asenby, has resigned his seat due to ill-health. His resignation means there’ll be a further election – in addition to parish and county council polls – on Thursday 5 May.

Mr Bateman, who is a former mayor of the Harrogate district, often attended Asenby Parish Council meetings. He worked for many years at Plumb Centre in Ripon and has been very active in charitable work in the area.

In order to meet a tight schedule to add this by-election to those being organised for 5 May, the arrangements for selecting a new councillor have been squeezed considerably. Nomination papers must be with the Returning Officer at Harrogate Borough Council by 4pm on Tuesday, 5 April.

Want to know more about local government’s future?
Residents are being invited to the first of a series of virtual locality roadshows to learn more about planning for the new North Yorkshire authority that will be in place from 1 April 2023. It’s a chance to hear directly about the changes to local government and how plans are taking shape for the new authority. There’ll be six sessions on offer across the county (based on the six parliamentary constituency areas) so residents of Topcliffe and Asenby might be interested in joining either:

  • April 12 – Harrogate and Knaresborough (Panel members: Wallace Sampson and Neil Irving of NYCC).
  • April 14 – Thirsk and Malton (Panel members: Stacey Burlet, Chief Executive of Ryedale District Council, and Richard Flinton, CEO of NYCC).

They will be held via Microsoft Teams between 6.30 and 8pm. To access the meetings go to:
https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/new-council-virtual-roadshows

Under the plans, the current county, district and borough councils in North Yorkshire will be replaced by a single council in April 2023. Until then, services will continue to be provided by North Yorkshire County Council and the seven district and borough councils. From April 2023, the new unitary authority will deliver all services across the whole of the current county footprint.

LATEST INFORMATION & NEWS ABOUT COVID
Free Covid testing for most has ended

The provision of universal free tests in England has ended. As of last Friday those not classed as vulnerable have to pay for a lateral flow test as free universal symptomatic and asymptomatic testing ended for the general public. The PM said testing had become "less valuable in preventing serious illness" because the dominant Covid variant – Omicron – is less severe, but critics suggest the financial impact of testing on the UK is the real reason the government wants to stop free provision. Universal free testing for almost two years has come at an astronomical cost to the taxpayer – the testing regime had a bigger budget than the Home Office last year and it cost £2 billion in January alone.

Limited symptomatic testing will be available for a small number of at-risk groups, however the government has not yet set out exactly who will be eligible. It is suggested people aged 80 and above are likely to be in that group, as well as NHS and social care staff.

Second booster jab
People aged 75 and over, care home residents and the immunosuppressed aged 12 and over, can now book a spring Covid booster vaccine. The NHS Covid-19 vaccination programme will contact people when it is their turn to be vaccinated again and, once they have an invitation, they will be able to book their appointment through the National Booking System either online or by calling NHS 119. The fourth jab will be made available to more people later in the year.
The week’s UK Covid statistics
• 52.8 million first doses given – that’s 91.8% of the population aged 12+.
• 49.5 million second doses given – that’s over 86%.
• 38.8 million booster or third jabs given – that’s 67.5% of those eligible.
• The R number range is now 1.1 to 1.2, meaning that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 11 and 12 other people.
• There were 4.9 million new cases of Covid last week. The highest weekly number ever recorded and representing one in every 15 of the population.
• In total, there’s been nearly 21.3 million confirmed cases of Covid.
• 16,204 people were admitted to hospital with Covid in the week to 28 March.
• 1,116 deaths in the last seven days. A 17.5% increase compared with the previous week.
• 165,570 UK deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test.
• 186,921 UK deaths had Covid mentioned on the death certificate.
• Worldwide, the global death toll is 6,172,729.
That’s all for this week. Keep safe and remain well.

Support for Ukraine
There are over 3,600,000 people, mainly women and children, who have escaped the war in Ukraine to neighbouring countries. Most have only a suitcase and whatever else they can carry.

Yorkshire to Ukraine is currently desperate for:
– Medical supplies, eg: first-aid bags, dressings, gloves, bandages, painkillers, cough and cold medicine, children’s medicines, life saving equipment.
– Food that can be eaten straight away, eg: biscuits, crackers, crisps, cereals, jelly pots, items that have a good date on them – tinned food like tuna fish etc. that doesn’t need cooking. Also needed are drinks, especially water.
– For children, eg: soft toys, books, crayons, colouring books & pens. Baby stuff, eg: nappies, new bottles,
dried baby milk, baby slings.

Address: 7 Marrtree Business Park, Sowerby, Thirsk YO7 3H. Follow the Facebook page for live updates from drivers delivering to the Ukraine border, updates on collection points, what is needed, volunteer roles and where to donate money: facebook.com/yorkshiretoukraine

Topcliffe Post Office continues to collect items to take to Ukraine. Items currently required are as above and cash donations to help meet fuel costs are also welcome.

Emilia also raises cash for Ukraine
Ten year-old Emilia Brierley, who lives in East Lea, Topcliffe, has unlocked a load of cash for Ukraine by making keyrings. Despite her busy school work and other commitments, Emilia wanted to play a part and do something positive to help. So far she has raised £180 and she’s looking to boost that amount. If anyone would like to purchase one of the blue and yellow keyrings for £3 – or whatever you can afford – please call her Mum, Joanna, on 07732 941758.

To vote in the elections on 5 May, you must be on the electoral register by Thursday 14 April 2022. Those who are 18 or over on polling day, should be making sure they are registered to vote. A proxy vote is when you apply for someone you trust to vote for you, but they must be eligible to vote in the election themselves. If you apply for a proxy vote, the person voting on your behalf can go to the polling station to cast your vote or can apply to vote for you by post. You will need to complete and return your application by Tuesday 26 April.

LATEST INFORMATION & NEWS ABOUT COVID
Second booster jab
People aged 75 and over, care home residents and the immunosuppressed aged 12 and over, can now book a spring Covid booster vaccine. The second booster or fourth jab is being made available to around five million people, with 600,000 expected to have been invited to get the jab in the last week. It comes as official figures show infection rates are rising in all age groups – including the over-70s.

• 52.7 million first doses given – that’s 91.7% of the population aged 12+.
• 49.4 million second doses given – that’s over 85.8%.
• 38.7 million booster or third jabs given – that’s 67.3% of those eligible.
• There have been nearly 20.8 million confirmed cases of Covid.
• 599,244 people tested positive in the last week. That’s a 8% decrease on the previous week.
• 14,376 people were admitted to hospital with Covid in the week to 21 March.
• 950 deaths in the last seven days. A 26% increase compared with the previous week.
• 164,454 UK deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test.
• 186,094 UK deaths had Covid mentioned on the death certificate.
• Worldwide, the global death toll is 6,144,411.

That’s all for this week. Keep safe and remain well.

Sunday Email: Issue 100

Welcome to the 100th issue of the Sunday Email. The first was issued on 4 April 2020 just after the first lockdown was introduced and there’s been an issue on all but three Sunday’s since then.

At last Wednesday’s lunch in the Village Hall I was very surprised to be presented with several gifts from recipients of the weekly email. The afternoon tea in a box and bottle of wine were very much appreciated. As were the reams of paper to help towards my costs for printing off a dozen, six-page emails each week for delivery to those in the village who don’t have access to PCs or smartphones. I’d like to offer a huge thank you to everyone who was involved.

Asenby supports plans for Platinum Jubilee
At its meeting last Wednesday evening, Asenby Parish Council agreed that it would encourage Asenby residents to support and join in Platinum Jubilee events planned in Topcliffe, making it a joint village celebration. Councillors said it made sense to join together to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee rather than duplicate plans and effort.

Although concerned about the potential cost of a scheme to improve and rename the riverside walkway between Topcliffe Bridge and Asenby, the parish councill agreed to investigate the idea and support at least some elements of the proposal. They acknowledged the offer of financial support from Hambleton Brewery and that additional finance might be available via grants from Harrogate Borough Council.

Separately, Asenby Institute is looking at presenting a commemorative mug to every Asenby child up to and including age 16, and will consider contributing to any other ideas that residents support.

She wants you all to know that she is fine and in future she won’t be challenging youngsters to a race! Anyway, her absence won’t affect the lunches, which will continue as planned.

LATEST INFORMATION & NEWS ABOUT COVID
Covid cases rise again
For the first time since January all UK nations last week saw an increase in infections, and it is said to be the clearest indication yet that the virus is once again becoming more prevalent. Around one in 20 people in private households in England are believed to have had Covid in the week to 12 March – that’s 3.3 million people, according to the Office for National Statistics. This is up from one in 25 or 2.6 million people, in the previous week. All age groups are affected, including the 75s and over, who are due a spring booster jab to top up protection. An easily spread sub-variant of Omicron, called BA.2, is now causing most cases.

Meanwhile, hospital admissions rates have increased among all age groups, but are highest among over-85s. But vaccines are still helping to stop many severe cases, say experts.

All Covid restrictions on travel lifted
Going on holiday from the UK to a foreign country became a lot easier last Friday, as the government scrapped all remaining coronavirus travel restrictions. The law on filling out passenger locator forms for those arriving in the UK was lifted, as were all testing testing requirements for those arriving in this country. The changes apply to both vaccinated and unvaccinated people. However, anyone travelling abroad from the UK will still have to comply with the Covid measures in place at their destination.
Covid inquiry: draft terms of reference published
The government has published its draft terms of reference for the public inquiry into how the Covid pandemic was handled. The main topics of the inquiry will be to examine the response to the pandemic and its impact in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland – and to produce a factual narrative account of what happened.

Representatives of the Covid-19 Inquiry will visit towns and cities across the UK over the next few weeks to meet with people impacted by the pandemic and to get their views on what should be examined. The inquiry team also plans to identify the lessons that can be learned so it can inform the UK’s preparations for future pandemics. A consultation on the terms of reference has commenced and runs until 7 April. The easiest way to submit views is at http://covid19.public-inquiry.uk

The week’s UK Covid statistics

• 52.7 million first doses given – that’s 91.7% of the population aged 12+.
• 49.3 million second doses given – that’s over 85.7%.
• 38.56million booster or third jabs given – that’s 67.1% of those eligible.
• There have been nearly 20.1 million confirmed cases of Covid.
• 552,198 people tested positive in the last week. That’s a 38% decrease on the previous week.
• 12,029 people were admitted to hospital with Covid in the week to14 March.
• 752 deaths in the last seven days. A 3% increase compared with the previous week.
• 163,511 UK deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test.
• 185,273UK deaths had Covid mentioned on the death certificate.
• Worldwide, the global death toll is 6,098,265.

That’s all for this week. Keep safe and remain well.
