Don’t buy – just borrow when you need it!
Here’s an interesting idea getting off the ground in Topcliffe. It’s a "Borrow, not Buy" scheme and it already is attracting support from local residents. It was launched by Martin Smith, who lives at the Old Police House and he says he has 12 outdoor folding Ikea chairs that might be handy if anyone is holding a summer BBQ. He also offers a 2x3m gazebo, camping equipment and various tools (such as a cordless hedge trimmer and strimmer) to anyone who would like to borrow them.

Sally Machen thinks it’s a brilliant idea and immediately added to the pool of things that others might like to borrow, including dining chairs, soup makers, slow cookers, books and other items. Sam Key offers a couple of quite large gazebos and a garage full of random tools that may be helpful if anyone needs them.

No doubt the scheme will grow in popularity as the range of items available increases. Here’s a dedicated Facebook link – https://www.facebook.com/Borrow-not-buy-

Fruityberry Fruit Farm
The popular fruit farm on the Dishforth to Sharow Road is open for pick your own. The farm now has specially designed raised beds for the elderly, children and wheelchair users, so fruit picking couldn’t be easier! There are strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and black currants available. Opening times are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Group bookings available Tuesday and Thursday. For more information check out – http://www.fruityberryfruitfarm.co.uk
Soup & sweet lunch
The next soup and sweet lunch will be held at the Village Hall on Wednesday 6 July at 12 noon. Cash raised will go to help with production costs of the The Tattler newsletter.
Summer Fayre and Afternoon Tea
Karen Morley and Linda Carver are planning to hold a Summer Fayre & Afternoon Tea at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall on Saturday 6 August between 11am and 3pm. Entry on to the event will be free of charge.

It’s going to be a similar event to the one held last Christmas when people were invited to hire a table for £5 to sell their wares or promote something. Anyone who would like a stall is asked to get in touch with Karen as soon as possible. There’ll hopefully be raffles and tombolas to support specific charities. Linda and Karen will put on their usual cake stall.

Afternoon teas which will include sandwiches, savouries, scones, cakes, plus tea, coffee or soft drink will be available at £5 per adult and £2.50 for children. If it’s a nice day (and it should be in August!) the hall’s recently acquired marquee will be erected so that tea can be enjoyed in the garden.

Last time help with baking was sought there was a tremendous response from kind villagers who were happy to help by baking cakes, buns, quiches or sausage rolls. Once again any help would be much appreciated on this occasion. Please contact Karen (577426) if you can assist.

Asenby Parish Council is ‘saved’
As reported last week a third attempt was started to get some nominations as councillors for Asenby Parish Council. Two previous attempts had drawn a blank, but this third go has finally raised some interest. By the closing date last Friday, there had been four names put forward – David Cockburn, Nikki Fox, Tanyka Rawden and Malcolm Sollitt. They are now declared elected unopposed. Four is sufficient for the council to be quorate. There is a fifth seat available and the Parish Council will consider a co-option in due course, if anyone is interested.

And a very special thank you is due to ex-chairman of the council, Peter Palmer, who has agreed to act as Parish Clerk on a temporary basis. There’ll be an advertisement in due course for a permanent clerk. Anyone fancy the job?

Milk Churn Farm Shop launches online market
Our very own farm shop is going national in the next few weeks with a new online marketplace. Locally produced food and drink will be available for delivery anywhere in the UK. If you think you might be able to assist, please het in touch with Donna Flemming on 07591 438766.
Fruityberry Fruit Farm

There are strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries and black currants available. Opening times are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Group bookings available Tuesday and Thursday. For more information check out – http://www.fruityberryfruitfarm.co.uk
National Cream Tea Day – 24th June
The fourth Friday of June each year is an event marked boldly in every foodie’s calendar. Cream teas have been a British staple since the 19th century, when the Duchess of Bedford decided that the wait between lunch and dinner was unacceptable. What then became a lavish spread of sandwiches, cakes, scones and tea, with guests massively overdressed for what is essentially an elaborate snack, soon became a popular event for tourists in tea rooms across the UK.

The cream tea is a compact and more casual version of the more elaborate afternoon tea, one that has been enjoyed by Britons in tea rooms, cafes and even humble garden centres for the last few centuries.

The Thirsk Garden Centre is celebrating the rich heritage of this tradition by offering reward card customers a free small scone to share when two friends each buy a hot drink.

This is a timeless ceremony meant to be shared! Jam first, of course.

Zoe seeks your views
Crime Commissioner Zoë Metcalfe is holding a series of meetings across North Yorkshire to hear views on proposals for North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service. The nearest meeting to Topcliffe & Asenby will be on Northallerton High Street on Wednesday 20 July from 10am until 4pm.

The Commissioner is considering proposals for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service over the next three years. The plan being discussed, sets out how the Service would seek to deploy its people, equipment, and resources. These proposals are based on an extensive risk assessment across North Yorkshire and York, which has identified the likelihood and severity of fires, road traffic collisions, water related incidents, and other emergencies.

If you can’t call in to see Zoe, you can have your say online by completing the consultation at www.TellCommissionerZoe.co.uk

Postscript on the Platinum Jubilee
Everyone who took part in the celebrations last weekend must have been impressed with the range of events organised – the Party in the Park, the Sunday Brunch, Church opening and tower tours, as well as various competitions to find the best Crown, the best decorated houses and best artwork produced by local schoolchildren. And earlier, there was the very successful Scarecrow trail. These events don’t just happen by magic! They take a great deal of time, energy and commitment to get things just right for the rest of us to simply walk in and enjoy. I am sure residents of our two villages will wish to offer their thanks to all the organisers of these many and varied activities. There are too many to list here, but they know who they are and they can feel happy and proud of their contribution. We are all extremely grateful, thank you and well done.

Last Sunday’s Email was issued before the Sunday Brunch was over. I mentioned that it had been a remarkable success. I can now report that a total of £343 was raised and this will be donated to the Village Hall to help support planned improvements including replacement of all windows in the hall and, hopefully, the construction of a new patio area later in the year.

St Columba’s services

  • TODAY- Sunday 12 June at 10.45am – Holy Communion
  • Sunday 19 June at 10.45am – Choral Matins
  • Sunday 26 June at 10.45am – Holy Communion.

All services conclude with refreshments and time to linger.

Maybe it is third time lucky for Asenby
Last week I reported that Harrogate Borough Council is trying for a third time to get some nominations for the five seats on Asenby Parish Council. Two previous attempts have drawn a blank.

Well, it looks like things are changing for the better as it’s understood a number of nominations were submitted by the deadline last Friday 10 June. The names of nominated candidates will be published next week.

This is very good news. It’s got to be better having local people managing village affairs, rather than nominated individuals from Harrogate Council.

Events planned at The Catton Kitchen
Here’s news of a few events planned at The Catton Kitchen over the coming weeks:

  • Friday 17 June, 4.30 to 8.30pm – burger night using as much of The Catton Kitchen’s produce and meat as possible. Join us at the market garden to enjoy your food where there will be a bar or pop in and collect your food to enjoy at home.

The majority of villagers embraced the Jubilee event and transformed Topcliffe and Asenby into a brightly decorated royal wonderland with bunting, flags and other decorations. Yesterday independent judges toured Topcliffe and Asenby and selected a the best decorated house from each village. The prize winners are:

  • Topcliffe: Pauline Hand, Deans Square
  • Asenby: The Robertson Family, The Old Barn.

Yesterday’s Party in the Park – the main event of the weekend – was held on the Playing Field in Topcliffe and dozens of families joined in the fun and games…and enjoyed a picnic, live music and ice creams. Here are a few pictures taken during the day:

A big thank you to all the parents who gave up their time to plan and organise the event and to Wendy and Louise Bumby who prepared 80 afternoon teas for those who preferred not to have to make up their own picnic.

Children were invited to attend the picnic wearing their own homemade monarch’s crown and the best efforts were awarded prizes. The winner was:

  • Teddy McLean of Half Moon House, Topcliffe
  • The second and third places went to Evelyn and Connie Robertson
  • All the competitors are pictured here

Throughout Saturday afternoon visitors had the opportunity to climb up the tower of St Columba’s Church to see how the village looked from above in its Platinum Jubilee colours.

This morning, around 100 villagers attended the Sunday Brunch at the Village Hall, making it one the best attended brunches ever organised. A big thank you to the team in the kitchen – Judith Lowe, Malcolm and Karen Morley, Linda Robinson, Chris Wiggins and Lynne Mee (and anyone else who helped).

Royalty-themed paintings prepared by children attending Topcliffe Academy were on display at the brunch. The artwork was judged earlier in the week and the judges chose the following winners:

  • Nursery & Reception: Amy Foster, Shaila Rahman and Louis Desquesnoe
  • Dragons (Years 1 and 2): Annabelle Bumby, Rose Davis and Isla Burke
  • Knights Coats of Arms – (Years 3 & 4): Tyler Dawson, Oliver Robertson and Ava Clark
  • Queen’s Images – (Years 5 & 6) Marilyn Wright, Grace Butma and Lewis Clark.

This evening at 6.30pm the community’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations will close with a Choral Evensong at St Columba’s Church. The service will be followed by refreshments. St. Columba’s – our very own saint
St Columba’s Day is celebrated on the 9 June. St Columba was known as the ‘Apostle to the Picts’ and was the founder of the Christian centre of Iona. He was of royal birth in Ireland, was a poet and a learned man and a monk.

Much of the story of his early life in Ireland is disputed but he seems to have been involved in the Battle of Cúl Dreimhne in 561, during which many men were killed. A synod of clerics and scholars threatened to excommunicate him for these deaths, but eventually, the process was deemed a miscarriage of justice. However, Columba’s own conscience was uneasy, and on the advice of an aged hermit, Molaise, he resolved to deal with his uneasiness by leaving Ireland and moving to, in 563, to Scotland.

According to legend he first landed on the Kintyre Peninsula. However, being still in sight of his native land, he moved farther north up the west coast of Scotland. The island of Iona was given to him by his kinsman Conall mac Comgaill, King of Dál Riata, who perhaps had invited him to go to Scotland in the first place.
Columba subsequently played a major role in the politics of the country. He was very energetic in his work as a missionary and he founded several churches in the Hebrides. He also worked to turn his monastery at Iona into a school for missionaries. He was a renowned man of letters, having written several hymns and being credited with having transcribed 300 books.

According to traditional sources, Columba died on Iona on Sunday, 9 June 597, and was buried by his monks in the abbey he created. Columba’s relics were finally removed in 849 and divided between Scotland and Ireland.

Have you ordered your repeat prescription for July?
Those who get medications from Topcliffe Surgery are reminded that major system changes being introduced next month mean that any meds needed in July should be ordered as soon as possible in June.

Patients will be unable to order their regular prescription whilst the changeover is taking place in July so that month’s prescription should be requested early so that requests can be fulfilled ahead of the change.

As a result of the computer systems update, patients will need to take action to ensure they can access medical services via their Apps. The Patient Access app will soon stop working altogether and instead everyone should download and use the NHS App to order their medication. However, patients are advised that they won’t be able to order medication on the NHS app unless they also link their app to the Surgery. Help about how to do this can be found at https://help.login.nhs.uk

It’s suggested that house decorations should go up by Wednesday 1 June and remain in place until at least Tuesday 7 June, but longer if you wish. The best decorated house in each village will be chosen on Saturday 4 June, starting at 9am and there’ll be a prize for the winners.

There’ll be live music, an inflatable assault course, family fun… and an ice cream van will be on site. Children are invited to attend the party in their own homemade monarch’s crown and there’ll be a competition to find the best on the day.

Saturday 4 June

A view from the tower – Throughout the afternoon there’ll be an ‘open-church’ event at St Columba’s for visitors to look around the church and enjoy refreshments. The church tower will be open for guided tours for those who wish to see how the village looks from above in its Platinum Jubilee colours.

Sunday 5 June

Platinum Jubilee Sunday Brunch – Brunch will be served in the Village Hall from 10am to 12 noon. There’ll be a full range of breakfast buns, cakes and a plentiful supply of hot and cold drinks. There’ll be Sunday newspapers available and all money raised will go to help maintain the Village Hall.

Paintings on a royal theme by children attending Topcliffe Academy (and any other children who care to enter) will be on display and they’ll be judged to pick winners from each age group. The best crowns will also be on display.

Sunday 5 June

Platinum Jubilee Choral Evensong – A service bringing the Platinum Jubilee Weekend to a close will be held at St Columba’s Church at 6.30pm. The service will be followed by refreshments. It’s hoped that our two villages might find this a nice way to close the extended weekend’s celebrations. Everyone is warmly invited to attend.

The Asenby Institute has now released this sketch of the bench and confirmed that it has been commissioned. The cost is being partly met by a grant from Harrogate Borough Council. The chestnut tree was planted in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

Yorkshire to Ukraine
The raffle to raise funds for Yorkshire to Ukraine raised a whopping £6,500 – an amazing amount that will be invaluable in supporting aid trips to the war-torn country. The draw was held Friday evening and a full list of winners – including a couple in Topcliffe – will be posted on Facebook in due course.
Changes to Topcliffe Surgery clinical systems
The surgery has asked for the information about forthcoming system changes to be repeated this week.

The surgery is updating its computer systems and patients will need to take action to ensure they can access medical services via their Apps and to obtain their medications on time. The "Patient Access" App will soon stop working altogether and instead everyone should download and use the "NHS" App to order their medication. Patients won’t be able to order medication on the “NHS” App unless they also link their app to the Surgery. Help about how to do this can be found at https://help.login.nhs.uk

The main changes to the clinical systems will take place in July and patients will be unable to order their regular prescription whilst the changeover is taking place. So, requests for June and July medication should be made as soon as possible in June so that requests can be fulfilled ahead of the change. Patients can also order their medication or submit enquiries via the Surgery’s website www.topcliffesurgery.co.uk

Changes like the one being planned will improve arrangements at the surgery, but it will be complicated and take time to complete, so everyone is asked to be patient (excuse the pun) during the transition.

Knit and Natter
The next Knit & Natter session at the Milk Churn Farm Shop is on Wednesday 1 June between 1.30 and 3.30pm. It doesn’t matter how experienced you are, this is about enjoying an afternoon chatting and maybe trying something different whilst making new friends, or meeting old ones.
