Ideas for positive action in villages
Sometimes, when you know you want to take positive action in your community, having that initial inspiration is the hardest part. Now Community First Yorkshire, an organisation involved in community-based work across the county, has produced a leaflet offering fifty-two ideas that could be of interest. From setting up a photography club to running a car-sharing scheme, it’s got some great ideas on what any community can do…if only there’s a willingness to get involved. Some of the ideas presented are already a reality in Topcliffe & Asenby, but there’s plenty of food for thought in the guide.

Sunday Email: Issue 117

Welcome to the 117th issue of the Sunday Email.

Take care over the next few days as the temperatures are likely to be very high. A red warning for extreme heat has been issued in much of England for the first time ever – meaning there is a “very likely” risk to life.

Topcliffe Bridge – an update
Last week North Yorkshire County Council’s latest response regarding repairs to Topcliffe Bridge was presented. An update was expected this week but unfortunately no new communication has arrived. Hopefully the further promised update can be presented next week.
Another jab for over 50s this autumn
All over-50s in the UK will be offered another Covid booster and a flu jab this autumn. For some people it will be their sixth dose of a Covid vaccine. Previously it was suggested it would be those older than 65 that would be offered the vaccinations. Others who will be eligible for a further dose include residents in a care home for older adults and staff, frontline health and social care workers and those aged five to 49 in a clinical risk group – including pregnant women. The jab will also be offered to those aged five to 49 who are household contacts of people with immunosuppression, and those aged 16 to 49 who are carers.

The details of the rollout have not been confirmed, however, it is thought immunisation will start with the oldest and most vulnerable from September.

The news comes as the spread of the BA.4 and BA.5 variants of Covid again rise to very high levels. It’s believed that expanding the offer will provide necessary protection to those at higher risk of severe illness and keep greater numbers of people out of hospital.

Cost of Living payments
Soaring energy bills – coupled with rising prices in supermarkets and shops – continue to put pressure on people, with figures showing more and more people are buying less food to get by. Now the government has begun to get the first of two payments, totalling £650, to around eight million households.

It’s being targeted at low-income households on benefits or those who receive certain support, such as Universal Credit, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit. Those eligible – identified by the Department of Work & Pensions or HM Revenue & Customs – will be paid automatically, so they do not need to apply and payments should appear in accounts as “DWP Cost of Living.”

The first instalment of £326 should be made to most people between 14 and 31 July, while the second payment of £324 will follow in the autumn. For those receiving Tax Credits, however, the first payment is to be made from the autumn and the second from winter 2022.

In addition to the above, pensioner households will receive an extra £300 to help cover the rising cost of energy this winter, while people on disability benefits will receive an extra £150 payment in September. From October, households will have £400 taken off energy bills.

Supermarket helps families
Asda has announced it will help feed children this summer as part of its initiative to help families at a time of financial difficulty. Children aged 16 and under can eat a hot or cold meal for just £1 in Asda Cafés, with no minimum adult spend required. The ‘Kids Eat for £1’ initiative is available all day, every day from 25 July until 4 September. Baby food is also available as part of the initiative, with little ones able to enjoy a free pouch of Ella’s Kitchen baby food (70g pouch).

The nearest Asda supermarkets with a cafe are in Harrogate and York, so it’s only an offer worth taking up if you are already planning a trip to one of those stores.

Gone phishing! How scams work
You wouldn’t let a thief enter your home, but what if the thief was masquerading as someone familiar, such as a postman, and tricked you into opening the door? Phishing works in a similar way – criminals impersonate trusted organisations by creating legitimate-looking messages and websites in order to trick people into opening the doors to their personal information. Once criminals have this information, it can be used to perpetrate fraud and cyber against you, or in your name.

Phishing attacks are a common problem faced by both individuals and businesses on a daily basis. The most impersonated organisations in phishing emails reported last year were the NHS, HMRC and Gov.UK. As of 31 May 2022, the National Cyber Security Centre’s Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) has received over 12million reports from the public, and has removed over 83,000 scams and 153,000 malicious websites.

Most of the phishing scams have one thing in common, they started with an unexpected email or text message. The goal of a phishing attack is usually the same – to trick you into revealing personal and financial information.

Here’s some simple advice you can follow when it comes to dealing with phishing scams:

  • If you have any doubts about a message, contact the organisation directly. Dont use the numbers or address in the message – use the details from their official website.
  • Remember, your bank (or any other official source) will never ask you to supply personal information via email.
  • If you think an email could be a scam, you can report it by forwarding the email to: report. Send emails that feel suspicious, even if you’re not certain they’re a scam.
  • Most phone providers are part of a scheme that allows customers to report suspicious text messages for free by forwarding it to 7726. Your provider can then investigate the origin of the text and arrange to block or ban the sender, if it’s found to be malicious.
  • If you’ve lost money or provided personal information as a result of a phishing scam, notify your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud: www.actionfraud.police.uk

Milk Churn Farm Shop to close
Announcement made on Top Residents’ Facebook page last Tuesday

It is with heavy hearts that we have decided that we can no longer keep The Milk Churn Farm Shop running as a viable business and so, in the not too distant future, we will be closing the doors for good.

Running a business in times like we are experiencing is a massive challenge but we have found it amazingly rewarding, with just a few disappointments along the way. We have met some fantastic customers who have become firm friends and so having to make the decision to close has been particularly painful and difficult.

Opening during the pandemic was always a gamble, but along with austerity, huge electric tariffs still rising, cost of foods at wholesale increasing hugely and for personal reasons, it is no longer viable to remain open.

It has truly been an honour to serve the local community. Our philosophy was to provide fresh food but shop local it seems for us, is becoming a thing of the past as food prices rise and people need to search for a deal in order to put food on the table. We cannot compete with the supermarkets who buy in bulk to reach cheaper prices.

All the staff will still remain with us as we will soon be opening the sandwich shop as an attachment to the Post Office. Following a few alterations the farm shop, with the council’s help, will return back into a home and be sold. We will be continuing our local products online and our fresh foods are earmarked for a new exciting venture.

We have no set date at the moment for closure but it won’t be too far away.

Thank you to all our customers for your support this last few years, it has meant the world to us. Onwards and upwards whilst new ideas are formulating and we will keep you posted.

Best Wishes
Debbie, Hannah and Rob

And unfortunately there’s another sad announcement…

John hangs up his gavel for the last time

Time has been called on the annual Attic Auction, an event which has been staged at the Village Hall for around 25 years. The decision was taken at last week’s Parochial Church Council where auctioneer John Phillips reported that it was time for him to retire from the event.

He said: "Unfortunately, despite so much help from people around the village, the principal burden still falls on me and, not being quite as young as I was, my ability to prepare and catalogue the sale and then conduct it all in the same day is beginning to fade!

"We have had these auctions every year since the mid-1990s, apart from 2020 when it had to be cancelled due to Covid. It has been a great run and always a pleasure for the organisers and villagers alike. I would prefer to step down while that is still the case – things were starting to creak a bit last year!

"So, I shall be hanging up my gavel at long last! I would, though, like to thank my ever enthusiastic and long suffering team of helpers both from the church and the village, as well as the generous donors providing things to sell, without whom nothing would have happened. It has always been fun and sometimes even hilarious and we have great memories to look back on."

Editor’s Note: I am sure that everyone in Topcliffe and Asenby will wish to thank John for the many years service as a brilliant auctioneer and fundraiser. He was always part of a team, but the heaviest burden always fell on his shoulders. It was always a joy to see and hear him in action and his performances and the Attic Auction itself, will be sadly missed.

Topcliffe Bridge – an update
Regular Sunday Email readers will recall that a request was submitted to North Yorkshire County Council’s highway department for Topcliffe Bridge to be repaired in time for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The response was that every attempt would be made to schedule the works in June, but they were unlikely to be done in advance of the Jubilee celebrations. Last week a request for an update on proposals for doing the job was sent and this reply was received on Friday.

"Thank you for your latest enquiry concerning the improvement works at Topcliffe Bridge. Unfortunately it hasn’t been possible to progress the work as quickly as intended due to awaiting approvals from Historic England and the Environment Agency and a recent technical matter concerning the masonry. I’m pleased to say, however, that all approvals are now in place. Efforts have been made to include in the delivery of this work a broader procurement package of works for the Safer Roads Fund project, but, due to its more specialist nature, we are having to procure separately which has also extended the delivery time. Please be assured that the delivery of this work remains a priority and I am meeting with colleagues next week to finalise details and will contact you again following that meeting to provide a further update."

There’ll be a further update next week.

Village Hall bookings go online
The ongoing trial of an online booking system at the Village Hall is going extremely well and by all accounts proving popular with those hiring the hall for their activities and private parties. Hallmaster, as it is called, allows enquiries and bookings to be made directly on the village website. People simply follow a link on the village hall pages which takes them to calendars and booking procedures. Currently, payment must still be made by BACS, but in the very near future all financial transactions will be undertaken using PayPal.

The Hallmaster booking pages can be found at: http://www.topcliffe.org.uk Anyone experiencing any difficulty making a booking, should call 07857 836332.

The newly elected Asenby Parish Council will meet at 8pm on Wednesday 20 July, in the Village Hall.

The 2020 race night had to be cancelled at the last meeting due to Covid. Those who had paid £5 to name a horse at that time can be confident their payment is still valid and their choice of name is on the Race Card for September’s event. If anyone wants to check their purchase and chosen horse name they can call 07785 223707 or email doug@dougallan.co.uk). There’s a few horses still left to be named and they are available on a first come, first served basis.

Tickets for the event are now on sale at £6 each. Entry includes a beef in red wine and crispy dumplings supper (or veggie alternative). Summer Fayre and Afternoon Tea
This year’s Summer Fayre & Afternoon Tea at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall will be held on Saturday 6 August between 11am and 3pm. Entry will be free of charge.

There is already quite a few stalls taken but organisers Karen Morley and Linda Carver are keen to hear from anyone else who would like to hire a table for £5 to sell their wares or promote something. There’ll also be raffles and tombolas to support specific charities.

On the day, from 11am to 12 noon, tea/coffee will be served with a choice of cake for £2 per head. Then from midday through to 3pm, afternoon teas will be served. You’ll get sandwiches, savouries, scones, cakes, plus tea, coffee or soft drink, all for just £5 per adult and £2.50 for children. If it’s a nice day the hall’s recently acquired marquee will be erected so that tea can be enjoyed in the garden.

APPEAL FOR HELP: Last time help with baking was sought there was a tremendous response from kind villagers who were happy to help by baking cakes, buns, quiches or sausage rolls. Once again any help would be much appreciated on this occasion. Please contact Karen (01845 577426) or Linda (01845 578014) if you can assist.

Happy 1st anniversary Catton Kitchen
This week marks the first anniversary of the opening of The Catton Kitchen and a special party was organised yesterday to mark the occasion. Owners Amy and Hugo held a garden party and BBQ, with music provided by a very capable soloist/guitarist Topcliffe resident Daniel Burdett who entertained the crowd with popular songs for all age groups and some he had even written himself. The day was a wonderful success and there’s a few photographs here:

Village Hall bookings go online
Topcliffe and Asenby Village Hall is catching up with the times by introducing an online booking system. The Village Hall Committee is introducing Hallmaster, an electronic booking service. This will allow enquiries and bookings to be made directly online. The system is currently being trialed with users and hirers being asked to follow a link to access calendars and booking arrangements. Currently, payment must still be made by BACS, but in the very near future all financial transactions will be undertaken using PayPal.

The introduction of the online system is very timely as it coincides with the recent retirement of Judith Lowe who for many years looked after village hall bookings.

The Hallmaster booking pages are on the village website at http://www.topcliffe.org.uk Anyone experiencing any difficulty making a booking, should call 07857 836332.

If anyone wants to check their purchase and horse name chosen, please get in touch (07785 223707 or doug@dougallan.co.uk). There’s five horses still left to be named: the cost is £5 per name/horse. Each ticket will be numbered and there’ll be a draw, the winner of which will win a night at The Crab & Lobster. Details about where you can buy tickets will be in next week’s email.

iPhone Scam
Scammers are targeting iPhone users with claims that their Apple Pay has been suspended. This latest text scam tells recipients that their Apple Pay – Apple’s mobile payment service – has been suspended and that they need to follow a link to reactivate the account. This scam is a text, sent from a mobile number, and reads: ‘Apple Pay has been suspended on your device. Please visit [secure-mysuspension-info.com].

Scammers often use tactics like this so that you panic and act fast. If you receive this message, don’t respond to it and don’t click on any links. If you’ve clicked the link already and you’re concerned you’ve given your details to a scammer, you should contact your bank immediately and report the scam to Action Fraud. You can also contact Apple Support if you’re concerned about the message you’ve received.

Church to close and parishes to merge
The Church Commissioners have proposed several changes to local parishes. It’s proposed that the parish of Baldersby with Dishforth and the parish of Skipton on Swale should be merged and that the church at Skipton on Swale should close and no longer be a building for regular public worship.

You can read the full proposition here.

Heritage Hub – Northallerton
Until October, Hambleton District Council is running an exciting new Heritage Hub which is designed to bring the community together to celebrate the town’s unique heritage. The Hub, which is located at 90 High Street, Northallerton, will display, for the first time, information about Northallerton’s past, its built heritage and the communities that live and work there, alongside objects from local people’s own collections.

It is also a place where people can meet and take part in interactive workshops relating to the town’s heritage and share their own stories which are being captured through a designated oral history programme.

For more information on the project, please contact Virginia Arrowsmith, Community Engagement Lead via email at vparrowsmith or ‘phone 07914 347892. There’s more information online at http://www.northallertonheritage.uk

Anyone who would like a stall for crafts, hobbies, books, etc, is asked to get in touch as soon as possible. There’ll also be raffles and tombolas to support specific charities. Linda and Karen will put on their usual cake stall.

From 11am to 12 noon, tea/coffee will be served with a choice of cake for £2 per head. Then from 12 noon through to 3pm afternoon teas will be served. You’ll get sandwiches, savouries, scones, cakes, plus tea, coffee or soft drink, all for just £5 per adult and £2.50 for children. If it’s a nice day the hall’s recently acquired marquee will be erected so that tea can be enjoyed in the garden.

Covid is still with us
Covid infections are continuing to rise, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show. The data suggests about 2.3 million people had Covid last week. That’s an increase of half a million on the previous week. Experts say two new fast-spreading subvariants of Omicron – called BA.4 and BA.5 – are likely to be driving new infections. These two strains make up more than half of new Covid infections and officials expect more people to test positive in the next few weeks. Interestingly, this wave appears to be driven by reinfections meaning that people who have had the virus previously are catching it again. BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron are not thought to be any more dangerous than earlier variants of Covid and most people will not be very ill with it. The good news is that although hospitalisation rates are up, this hasn’t so far been accompanied by an increase in the number of Covid related deaths.
That’s all for this week. Keep safe and remain well.
