The price includes a two course supper and each numbered ticket will be entered in a draw on the night with the prize of a luxurious over night for two at Crab Manor followed by a delicious breakfast.
Anne and Phil tie the knot
Last week it was mentioned in the Sunday Email that life-long Topcliffe resident Anne Billett planned to remarry. Today we offer her and her new husband Phil every congratulation and best wishes for a very happy future together. The couple were married yesterday at Sowerby Methodist Church and had their reception at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall. They will live in Topcliffe.

Anne aged 65, who works at Herbs Unlimited near Sand Hutton, is well-known in Topcliffe, having lived in the village all her life. She was born at Salmon Hall Farm, a mile or so past the Mill on Catton Lane. Her parents John and Dorothy Raynor were much involved in village life. As well as Anne, there were two siblings – Yvonne and Stephen.

In !976 Anne married John Billett who over the years became a good friend and helper to many in Topcliffe. They had four children – Sarah, Helen, Peter, Julie. John died in 2018 after a long illness.

Anne’s daughters encouraged her to join a dating app and it wasn’t long before she met Phil Haley, a sport and operatics fanatic from Batley, West Yorkshire. After a short ‘courtship’ Phil proposed in August 2022 and just over a year later they have tied the marriage knot.

Phil retired in 2019 after spending years in a range of careers, including local government, security, self-employment and latterly, health care. He loves cricket and continues to umpire matches in the Nidderdale league. He also loves Rugby League and has followed Batley Bulldogs since 1961. He is a member of both the Batley and Halifax Gilbert & Sullivan Societies.

Soup & Sweet Lunch
As autumn takes a grip and winter fast approaches, the regular Soup & Sweet lunches are being replaced by the more substantial Warm Hub lunches starting Wednesday 4 October. Then they’ll be held fortnightly throughout the winter months. As usual, lunch will be served from 11.30am to 12.45pm. There’ll be a selection of meals followed by delicious cakes and bakes and tea or coffee. All welcome. No set charge, but donations welcome.

There were 21 people at Soup & Sweet lunch last Wednesday and a further five meals were delivered to homes in Topcliffe. £104 was raised of which £50 has been donated to Animal Rescue Crew, some was used to pay the Village Hall rent balance was added to the Warm Hub hardship fund.

If you know of anyone in either of our two villages who would benefit from having a meal delivered (because they can’t get to the Warm Hub), please get in touch with Karen Morley on 01845 577426.

The photograph shows members of the Warm Hub team showing off their new aprons, made for them by the Bootshop at Easingwold and embroidered with names by Foxstitch of Thirsk.

Sale of wet and dry dog food
Local pet food business IPN (Inspired Pet Nutrition), based on Dalton Industrial Estate, has donated a quantity of nutritious dog food to the organisers of the Topcliffe Big Race Night, as a way of contributing to the fundraising efforts in support of the Village Hall.

As it would be quite difficult to deal with the produce on Race Night, it has been decided that the dog food will be put on sale outside the Village Hall on Friday 6 October whilst the Bags2School recycling event is taking place (see later article about that event). All the dog food will be offered at bargain prices and the income will be added to the funds raised on the Race Night and then presented to the Village Hall.

The full list of products on offer is here.

FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED… FOR A REAL BARGAIN

‘Pearl of Africa’ Ugandan Children’s Choir
The concert given by the Pearl of Africa choir last Monday (25 September) in St Columba’s Church was a tremendous success with over fifty adults and many children in attendance. The colourful costumes, dancing and amazing voices of the youngsters made for a wonderful evening’s entertainment. The concert raised £352.79 in donations for the charity, which provides schooling for children in rural Uganda. Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this such a memorable evening, whether by donations, cleaning, providing food and baking, or flower arranging.

This is a reminder that Topcliffe Surgery is offering flu vaccinations to the following patients:

Cost of living payments…and potential scams
Cost of living payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have been a lifeline for many low-income families since they were introduced in July last year, with millions receiving the payments. The last 2023 payment of £300 will be made between 31 October and 19 November. This will be the second of three payments by the government, with a further £300 payment to be paid in spring 2024. An announcement is expected at budget time in November about potential further payments.
— — — — — — — —
Risk of scams
Ahead of the autumn payment, the DWP is warning people to be on the lookout for potential scams that see criminals sending text messages claiming to be from the government. The message tells people that their cost of living payment is ready to be ‘claimed’ and says people need to click a link in the text to apply. However, the link takes the person to a fake website where they’re asked to hand over personal details including bank card details.

Remember, all cost of living payments are automatically paid by the DWP directly to those who are eligible, so customers do not need to apply or contact the government at any stage. If you think you’ve been scammed, contact your bank immediately. They might be able to stop any payments being made from your account. You can call 159 which will connect you to your bank – it works the same way as calling 101 for the police and will get you through to your bank safely and securely. Then you’ll need to change any passwords that you think have been compromised. You can report the matter to the police on 101 and Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or through the Action Fraud website.

Change of plan for poppy creation
Unfortunately the idea of hanging a poppy feature from the tower of St Columba’s church will not be going ahead. However, the Knit & Natter group, and other supporters in our two villages who have been busy making hundreds of poppies to stitch to a net background, say they will be looking for an alternative location to hang the feature during the forthcoming Remembrance commemorations. The invitation for anyone in Topcliffe and Asenby to knit poppies and deliver them to the Post Office still stands.

Asenby Play Park
Asenby Parish Council held a public meeting last Wednesday evening (13 September) to share the responses from the play park survey held earlier in the year. The meeting was well attended with 20 residents and there was generally a positive mood about the future of the park. A copy of the presentation can be viewed here.

There are around 320 residents in the village made up of 276 adults and 44 of school age. Of these, 69 responded to the questionnaire and 34 individuals left their contact details to enable the parish council to get in touch.

From the information provided, it can be seen that the park is used, albeit not extensively, and is likely to be used more if it better served the needs of the wider community. All of the equipment is used to varying degrees with the climbing frame, swings and slide being used most.

Suggestions for improvements to the park included better maintenance, a wild area with more flowers and trees, plus a new path and seating. There were also suggestions for more equipment, a dog walk area, a biking area and allotments.

All of these points were discussed at the meeting identifying both the benefits and the pitfalls. The majority of questions related to taking a plan forward, people’s availability to volunteer and availability of financing.

The parish council intends to revisit all of the feedback at the next council meeting (date to be confirmed) and start contacting potential volunteers with the aim of developing a plan over the next few weeks.

Asenby planning application
The lodging of a planning application to expand the small business estate on the Rainton road, not far from the Crab and Lobster, has caused considerable concern among residents of both Asenby and Topcliffe.

Although the published final date for comments has passed, it is understood that a decision will not be made in the next couple of weeks, it’s worth people continuing to submit their views. The more that do so, the more likely the communities views will prevail.

Both parish councils have lodged their objections to the planning application. It is seen as another significant industrial area being built within the weight restriction zone that is meant to protect the two villages. Traffic to and from this new site would have a legal right to travel past Asenby and through the centre of Topcliffe.

We’ll just have to wait and see if planners and our elected representatives put business expansion top of the priority list or are prepared to listen to local residents who are concerned about industrial growth on their doorstep and increased HGV traffic through their villages.

Poppy appeal!
The industrious ladies of the Knit & Natter group, which meets weekly in the Village Hall, have been busy making hundreds of poppies for a fantastic ‘waterfall of poppies’ display they are hoping to hang from St Columba’s church tower in advance of Remembrance Day in November.

Detailed negotiations with the church authorities have been underway and formal permission to undertake the plan is anticipated anytime soon. Once gained, soldiers from Alanbrooke Barracks will hang the display.

The Knit & Natter group would appreciate some help. If you can knit a few poppies and help sew them onto the cargo netting to complete the display, please get busy now and bring your poppies along to the Village Hall between 2 and 3pm next Saturday 23 September. Or drop off your poppies at the Post Office any time before Saturday afternoon.

The Tattler – September issue
The September Tattler has been delivered to all households in our two villages a little earlier than originally planned. It was due out on Tuesday but the printer finished the job ahead of schedule. I hope you enjoy the read.
Urgent action needed if you oppose latest planning application
Both Asenby and Topcliffe Parish Councils have expressed concern about a recently submitted planning application to expand the small business estate on the Rainton road not far from the Crab and Lobster. It is seen as another significant industrial area being built within the weight restriction zone that is meant to protect the two villages. Traffic to and from this new site would have a legal right to travel past Asenby and through the centre of Topcliffe.

Asenby Parish Council objects on the following grounds:
1) The application represents a major development and as such is too extensive for the area.
2) The volume of traffic (both cars and HGV) will be excessive for the small roads leading to and from the site.
3) The multiple junctions of the A167 with Whaites Lane and Wide Howe Lane are not suitable for such an increase in both volume and type of traffic.
4) Although the parish council agrees there are excellent road links to the A168 travelling south, and the A1M, any vehicles of all sizes travelling north on the A168 to the A19 would likely pass through Topcliffe, which is already a busy village. Preferably HGVs needing to get to the A19 would be forced access the A168 southbound down to the A1M junction and then undertake a ‘U-turn’ to travel north. But it is more likely many large vehicles would ignore the 7.5T restrictions and add to the Topcliffe congestion.
5) There are business parks already in the vicinity of Thirsk which have been planned with vehicle access in mind and, even if currently are full to capacity, it would make more sense to extend these than build in a rural area where roads are not designed for the purpose.
6) There are bus stops in Asenby and Topcliffe but we feel that these are mainly irrelevant as the types of visitors and reducing timetables will result in little use of public transport.

Hopefully residents of both villages will feel equally strongly about this application and will lodge objections/comments via https://uniformonline.harrogate.gov.uk/…/applicationDet…
but it must be done by tomorrow, 11 September.

Fence painting – thank you
Parish councillor Ben Collard would like to thank all the volunteers – Peter Manning, Roy Beckwith, Doug Allan, Stacey Kendall, Lee Wainwright, Malcolm Ealand, Fran Eckersley, Linda Bumby, Jenny Bumby and Florence Bumby who turned up yesterday (9 September) to help paint the white roadside fencing between The Swan and the school. Also a big thank you to Linda Robinson who lives close by and brought out a cup of tea for everyone.

Some photographs:
1: The fence before painting.
2: The volunteers
3: Linda Robinson
4. The fence after painting.

These little jobs are likely the responsibility of the Council’s Highways Department but getting action to keep them looking smart, tidy and safe is hard to achieve, so it’s easiest to simply do the job ourselves.

A huge thank you to Thirsk Decorating Centre who donated the paint.

Flu season approaches
Topcliffe Surgery is now offering flu vaccinations to the following patients – those aged 65 years and over (including those who will be 65 by 31 March 2024); under 65 years and in an at-risk group (e.g. asthma, diabetes, heart disease etc); pregnant women; those in long-stay residential care homes; carers in receipt of carer’s allowance, or those who are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person and frontline health or social care workers.

Patients aged 50-64 years not in an at-risk group are not eligible for a flu jab through the NHS this year.

Topcliffe Surgery patients entitled to a jab will be contacted and invited to call in for their vaccination during October and November as and when vaccinations are available. Please be patient and wait for the surgery to contact you.

Clerk to Asenby Parish Council – Vacancy
Asenby Parish Council is seeking a Clerk to support them with administrative duties. The council meets a number of times each year depending on needs within the village. There was a stunning array of produce across all categories. A large crowd visited the show and mingled among the many horticultural and other exhibits, had a cup of tea and chatted with competitors, friends and neighbours.

Well done Peter Lowe who was the overall winner in the horticultural section, with 51 points. He also had the ‘Most Firsts’ with 13 category wins. He also won the show last year so he’s proving to be consistent.

Other trophy winners were: Hobbies – Julie Hunt; Floral – Karen Hargreaves and Baking – Fiorella Shepherd. There were very few entries in the Children’s category, but well done to those who did enter.

Congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to everyone who took part, and especially to the Show Secretary Judith Lowe and all the volunteers who helped ensure the show went smoothly.

The commemoration plans also include a comprehensive programme of 15 illustrated talks, three music performances two plays and two special film screenings. You can check out all event details at https://thecenotaphcentenary.info
