Sunday Email: Issue 184

Welcome to the Sunday Email.

Today’s Remembrance Service at St Columba’s Church at 10.45am will be led by Rev’d Stephen Wilson, Military Chaplain from 4th Regt. RA, based locally within the parish at Alanbrooke Barracks. He will be accompanied by personnel from this Regiment.

Because of Regimental deployments, it has not always been possible to arrange their presence at our local Remembrance Service, so it will be wonderful to have them involved. Maybe the visible efforts of the Knit and Natter group in commemorating this time of remembrance, might in some way have influenced their decision?

The Remembrance Service today is a short stand-alone service. It will include a two minute silence at 11am, an Act of Remembrance, the laying of wreaths by the military and Topcliffe Parish Council at the village War Memorial, and the reading of the Roll Call of the Fallen (some of whose family names are still familiar).

So, a special opportunity for all villagers to remember with gratitude the sacrifice of past residents, and to show thanks and indebtedness to those currently serving. After the service refreshments will be served.

Jubilee Gardens
Today also at 11am a few villagers will gather in Jubilee Gardens to mark Remembrance Sunday. It will be an informal acknowledgement of the service and sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. Please come along if you can.

Christmas Fair
The Christmas season got off to a fine start with the excellent Christmas fair held yesterday at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall. Lots of people visited the many stalls and enjoyed a pork & stuffing sandwich, cakes and a cuppa.

A big thank you to the organisers and helpers who made this possible, including Karen and Malcolm Morley, Karen’s daughter Nicola, Linda Robinson, Linda Carver, Richard Byas, Julie Coldbeck and Jane Burnett.

Two charities will benefit from the funds raised. Exact calculations are still to be made but it is anticipated that both the Herriot Hospice in Thirsk and Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall fund will receive over £200 each.

Asenby Parish Council Updates

Volunteers’ Meeting
A volunteers’ meeting will be held on Tuesday 14 November at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall. This is an opportunity for those who’ve expressed an interest in volunteering to come together for an initial discussion. The aim is to consider how the village can move forward with the suggestions for the play park and any other general activities. All are welcome to attend, so even if you haven’t already volunteered you’ll be most welcome, with no obligation. Plus, if you know of someone else who may be interested, please bring them along. It would be useful for planning if you could let the Parish Council know if you will be attending. Please mail: asenbypc

New parish website: The Parish Council has launched a new website containing lots of information about the work of the Parish Council itself and lots of other village matters. It can be found at http://www.asenby.org

Anyone who is eligible to receive a gift and have not received one in the past, please contact your village Feoffee before November 30:

  • Asenby – Carole Ford – 07904 015942 or put a note through her letterbox at Dunnock House giving your name and address.
  • Topcliffe – Anne-Marie Barningham – 07740 175311 or catch her on her milk round.

Power Supply
Northern Powergrid has indicated that the power supply in the Topcliffe will be interupted between 9am and 3.30pm on Thursday 23 November whilst some equipment repairs are carried out. This letter appeared on the Village Hall noticeboard last week.

It’s unknown precisely which properties in the village will be affected. A call to the company seeking clarification produced no further details: in fact, the person that answered the call was unable to find any evidence that a supply cut was scheduled in Topcliffe! He did suggest that anyone who wanted to know if their house was affected should call 105 – a direct line to the company’s emergency unit.

Citizen Researchers
Zoë Metcalfe, the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for York and North Yorkshire is looking for adults from diverse backgrounds across North Yorkshire to become Citizen Researchers and to represent their local community. The North Yorkshire Community Commission on Police, Fire, and Crime is a brand-new project aimed at fostering community engagement and inclusivity in decision-making processes. Citizen Researchers will become the voice of their community, directly influencing the direction of police, fire, and crime-related policies. This role requires a commitment of approximately five meetings and two peer research events, both in-person and online, between December 2023 and April 2024. The closing date is 4 December and more information and how to apply is available from the Commissioner’s website: https://www.northyorkshire-pfcc.gov.uk/vacancies/
Honey Decorations
Local small business, Asenbee Honey, has introduced a new beeswax Light Catcher or Christmas tree decoration for sale this festive season, though they can be used at anytime during the year. These are not candles but they have cotton wick loops so can be hung to give a gorgeous honeyed scent and cast pretty shadows anywhere in your home.

There are limited numbers available. Check out their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/search/posts/?q=asenbee%20honey

Scam Loft Insulation Callers
There’s an old scam that appears to be doing the rounds again. Residents receive a telephone call from someone claiming that they need to visit the property to inspect the loft insulation so that they can supply a certificate as part of a ‘Government Scheme’. The caller advises that a moisture test is required and then a new certificate will be issued and sent via Recorded Delivery.

But it is most likely a scam, so always be wary of any approach made in a telephone cold call. Always check the credentials of any company or individual that contacts you out of the blue. And always check any claims made, especially when the company are claiming to work with other agencies.

If you have any concerns about a company that has contacted you, call Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133. If you believe you have been a victim of a scam please contact us on 101 or via North Yorkshire Police website at https://www.northyorkshire.police.uk/

Asenby Business Park – Planning application refused
A proposal to develop five commercial buildings containing 15 business units with associated access, landscaping and parking, on Wide Howe Lane, Asenby has been refused by North Yorkshire Council.

The refusal letter states the application was not suitable for the following reasons:

  • In the context of the rural location and size of Asenby village, it is considered that the scale of development is not appropriate in the proposed location and would result in significant harm to the character of the countryside and landscape character and to the form and character of the settlement. The proposal is therefore contrary to local plan policies EC3 and NE4.
  • The proposal is for largescale employment development on a site in the open countryside that is outside development limits and is not well related to a rural settlement. The proposal is therefore contrary to local plan policies GS2, GS3 and EC3, which seek to direct development to the most sustainable locations and to protect the character and appearance of the countryside.

That is good news for Asenby and the surrounding area. There are many sites that are more suitable for industrial and commercial development. The use of good quality agricultural land on the edge of villages is not necessary for these purposes. The application may have been contrary to various local plan policies, but the voice of the community no doubt had some impact on this decision. Maybe community action works after all? But let’s not be complacent. The applicant is more than likely to appeal, so watch out for further news, if indeed they do appeal.

Asenby Parish Council Updates

Volunteers Meeting
The volunteers meeting originally planned for Wednesday 25 October has been postponed until 7.30pm on Tuesday 14 November. It will take place in the Upper Committee Room at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall.

Clerk to the Parish Council
This post still needs to be filled. The Clerk is needed to support parish councillors with administrative duties. The council meets a number of times each year depending on needs within the village. This is a paid post and would particularly suit someone who has held a similar post in the past, although this is not essential as guidance and support will be available. For further information please email: asenbypc

Parish Councillor vacancy
There continues to be a vacancy on the Parish Council. It can be filled by co-opting an interested person i.e. there’s no election to fight. For further information please email asenbypc

New weight limit sign erected at Asenby
This is the traffic sign that was erected last week on the approach to Asenby from the A168 (northbound). Judging by the instruction on the sign, drivers of vehicles over 7.5 tonnes in weight wanting to be at Dalton Industrial Estate, but have come off the A168 a junction too early, should turn right on Whaites Lane and then presumably (there is no sign directing them to do so), go southwards on the A168 to the Dishforth junction where they would need to cross over the highway to head northwards again to the Topcliffe/Dalton junction. It will be interesting to see if these instructions are followed.

It’s hoped that a sensible signage scheme around Topcliffe and Asenby and on the A168 is being created jointly by North Yorkshire Council and the government’s Highway Agency which is responsible for highway signs on the A168. Unfortunately, they do appear to be working a little disjointedly and at different speeds.

Sowerby and Topcliffe local election
Due to the resignation of Councillor David Whitfield, an election is to be held to fill the vacancy in North Yorkshire’s Sowerby & Topcliffe Division. The election is scheduled for Thursday 30 November and Topcliffe residents will be able to vote at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall.

Anyone wishing to put themselves forward as a candidate must submit a completed set of nomination forms by 4pm on Friday 3 November.

Those living in the division have until Tuesday 14 November to register to vote and until 5pm on Wednesday 15 November to apply for a postal vote.

For more information visit: http://www.northyorks.goc.uk/your-council/elections-and-voting/elections

Poppy displays have appeared all over Topcliffe this last week. The main displays can be seen at the Toll Booth, Jubilee Gardens, the Post Office and the Village Hall.

A big thank you to the ladies in the Knit & Natter group for their hard work in creating the poppies and sewing them to the netting for the ‘waterfall displays’. Also to Rob Roberts who made the wooden poppies on stakes and who has spent much time erecting the various displays.

National Three Peaks Challenge
A couple of weeks ago an article was included in the Sunday Email about a group of locals who planned to tackle one of the UK’s biggest walking/climbing challenges to raise cash for the British Heart Foundation in memory of Ben Lowe, who passed away in March this year. The aim was to tackle three peaks – Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis in 24 hours.

The challenge took place over the weekend 14/15 October and the £2,000 fundraising target was easily smashed, with £3,600 being raised. And it was completed in 23 hours 15 minutes. Congratulations to those taking part and a big thank you to everyone who supported this amazing event.

Beware of rogue buyers on Marketplace
Facebook Marketplace is a great place to buy and sell goods and services, however, unfortunately the platform is also seen as a hunting ground for scammers selling non-existent, fake and dangerous goods, as well as trying to prey on those selling products. North Yorkshire Police is advising anyone who selling on Facebook Marketplace, to look out for these red flags:

  • Buyers refusing to meet up in person.
  • Anyone wanting to move the conversations outside of Facebook Messenger.
  • Those asking for items to be shipped before payment is received.
  • Buyers providing a prepaid shipping label.
  • Buyers overpaying then asking for a refund of the difference.
  • Those with no profile picture on Facebook.
  • Requests for your phone number or other personal information.

Payment scammers pose as buyers who ask to purchase an item and claim to have sent a payment. The Topcliffe Big Race Night
A fantastic night was had by everyone at the Race Night in the Village Hall last night. The hall was packed with over 90 eager racegoers and the atmosphere was electric…especially as the drinks flowed and the excitement levels rose. The photographs give a flavour of the event. Final calculations are still to be made but the amount raised for village hall funds is definitely going to top last year’s amount.

I would like to offer a big thank you to everyone who helps make the Race Night the huge success it is. Without sponsors the event simply wouldn’t happen, so thanks to those companies that donated to the raffle, to Hambleton Brewery for supplying the bar and ales, to those who named a race or a horse and Dalton-based IPN for supplying lots of dog food that was sold separately to raise additional funds.

Thank you also to the volunteer caterers who prepared a two course dinner for all the guests and to the other volunteers who worked hard on the night making the technical stuff work – running the bar, taking the bets and selling raffle tickets. Finally, thank you to all those who attended and helped raise a staggering amount for village hall funds.

Quiz night at the Village Hall
TONIGHT – the Sunday quiz is on at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall at 8pm.

Photograph shows last week’s winning team – Fishermen’s Friends – with quizmaster Jim Shaw.

Asenby Parish Council Updates

New Clerk -The Parish Council isin discussions with a candidate for the post of Clerk Parish and hopes to be able to make an announcement soon.

Parish Council vacancy – There continues to be a vacancy on the Parish Council. It can be filled by co-opting an interested person i.e. there’s no election to fight. The parish council meets a number of times each year depending on the needs of the village. For further information please email asenbypc

Volunteer Meeting – A meeting is to be held on Wednesday 25 October at 7:30pm in the Upper Committee Room at the Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall. This will be an opportunity for those who’ve expressed an interest in volunteering to come together for an initial discussion around moving forward with the suggestions for the play park, and any other general activities that may be available. All are welcome to attend, so even if you haven’t already volunteered you’ll be most welcome, with no obligation. Plus, if you know of someone else who may be interested, please bring them along. It would be useful for planning if you could let the Parish Council know if you will be attending. Please mail: asenbypc.

Grass Cutting – A new contractor has been appointed to maintain the grass verges in the village, the park and the paths on the outskirts. They have completed one round of cuts but there is likely to be a couple more before winter if the grass keeps growing as it currently is. It may take the rest of this year for the grass to get back to ‘normal’ so please be patient.
