Quiz night at the Village Hall
TONIGHT – the Sunday quiz is on at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall. Come along at 8pm. The quiz is attracting a regular crowd each week and it has become a popular social evening. If you fancy testing your general knowledge and later having a chat with friends and neighbours, please come along. Bring your own drinks and nibbles. Glasses are available, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.
Topcliffe Post Office
The cash machine in the Post Office is now working again. Apologies are offered to customers who have been inconvenienced by the recent machine breakdown.
Play park reopens
Topcliffe’s play park has reopened following some significant improvements. Yesterday youngsters gathered in the park to see what has changed and yo try out the new equipment.

The park still requires a few finishing touches, such as the allotment fencing, which it is anticipated will be completed tomorrow. If you’re visiting the park before then, please stay away from the areas dug out for allotments.

There will be some further tidying up of the playing field, later on in the year.

The Topcliffe Big Race Night
Horse names are still on sale at £5 each. Some of the whacky names chosen so far include, Hoppolong, Dizzy Daisy and Sirius. Who will you shout for? Naming a horse and becoming an owner means you’ll have a one in eight chance of winning a race and a bottle of bubbly. There were initially 64 horses for sale but 36 have now been sold…so you’ll need to act fast if you want to be sure of booking one. Call Doug Allan on 07785 223707 or email doug@dougallan.co.uk

The Topcliffe Big Race Night is on at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall on Saturday 14 October. Tickets for the event will go on sale in August but you can add your name to a ‘waiting list’ if you wish. Same contacts as above.

Chip ‘n Dales
The Chip ‘n Dales fish and chip van is in Topcliffe each Friday tea time – 5 to 7pm.
Beware of fake Microsoft emails
The latest scam email doing the rounds suggests that the recipient had been previously informed of a new Microsoft update, but hadn’t carried out the necessary update. It claims that Microsoft will stop all images and pdf files . It also suggests that Microsoft has noticed suspicious attempts on your email account and asks you to verify your account to avoid losing all your emails. As a last attempt to lure you in, there is a warning at the bottom of the email claiming your account will be suspended if no action is taken and a link to ‘Verify Right Now’ is supplied. Although the link leads to a convincing site, it is a scam that is designed to steal your Microsoft login details.

Action Fraud Alert advises that you should not click on any links or give out any personal or financial details.

Suspicious emails you think are a scam can be forwarded to: report If you believe you have been a victim of a scam please report it to the police on 101.

Reporting these types of emails have led to the removal of 242,000 scam websites as of June 2023.

Baby Bubble in Topcliffe
There’s a brand new weekly range of classes for mothers and babies coming soon to Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall starting Friday 8 September. Baby Bubble is provided by Rosie Hopps and here’s a taste of what’s on offer:

Zumbini
Developed by Zumba and BabyFirst, Zumbini is a music and movement programme for children aged 0-4 which promotes the development of cognitive, physical, social and emotional skills through the exploration of music.

Thirsk Hall Sculpture Garden
The Sculpture Garden at Thirsk Hall has reopened and it currently features a major exhibition by renowned stone carver Emily Young in Gallery One. Emily was named ‘Britain’s greatest living stone sculptor’, by The Financial Times. Some of her monumental sculptures will be placed in the garden and parkland.
There are new outdoor sculptures for visitors to explore, by a selection of artists including William Tucker, Richard Hudson, Rory Menage, Katie Hallam, Tim Ellis, Rosie Leventon, as well as Emily’s. All these artists are members of the Royal Society of Sculptors.

Rural Arts at The Courthouse in Thirsk

  • A Midsummer Night’s Mischief – Thursday 3 August at 2.30pm – the fairies in the forest are starting a fight – but which side are you on? Team Titania or Team Oberon? Hoglets Theatre presents their interactive and larger-than-life version of Shakespeare’s summer comedy – especially for young audiences. Expect wild characters, raucous singalong songs, puppets, stunts and some frankly ridiculous disco dancing. Age guide 5+.
  • NT Live Screening: Fleabag – Thursday 7 September at 7.30pm – written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) . Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life.

St Wilfred’s Procession, Ripon
This historic Ripon procession on Saturday 29 July will have brightly decorated floats driving round the city, generating a carnival atmosphere. It’s a unique event dating back to 1108 when King Henry granted a Royal Charter allowing the city to hold an annual fair. It is traditionally held to mark the feast of St Wilfrid. You can catch the procession at various points during the day: 1.30pm at Studley Road; 2.15pm at Allhallowgate; 3pm at Southgate; 4.05pm in the Market Place. Model Railway Show
The annual Model Railway Show is once again being held at Thirsk Town Hall. It will be on Sunday 30 July from 10am until 4pm. There will be eighteen layouts plus demonstrations, trade stalls, tombola, refreshments and a children’s competition. Adults £5 and accompanied children free. All profits to Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
William Hill Summer Cup

Jurassic Northallerton
The organisation ‘Love Northallerton’is bringing back one of the biggest and most successful events of 2022. This year’s Jurassic Northallerton will see more dinosaurs than ever. The event will take place in Northallerton High Street on Sunday 6 August.

Topcliffe Summer Fair & Brunch
The annual Summer Fair and Brunch will take place at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall on Sunday 6 August between 10am and 3pm. Brunch will include bacon, sausage and egg butties plus coffee, tea and cakes.

There’s just a couple of stalls available. If you are interested in taking one, please contact Karen Morley on 01845 577426. They are £5 each.

Thirsk & Sowerby Festival on the Flatts
This annual family event will take place on Sunday 6 August starting at 10am. It’s a free fun day for all and promises to be bigger and better as every year more and more, bigger and better things are added to the list of attractions.
Family Events at Thorp Perrow

  • Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 August – Family Fun Weekend – There’ll be giant inflatables, soft play, archery, crafting and face painting. Visitors can also enjoy the Bird of Prey displays, walk the Summer Trail, eat at the Tea Room.
  • Wednesday 16 to Sunday 20 August – Thrills of the big top – Enjoy a fabulous, fun-filled family show in a traditional Big Top tent with the famous National Festival Circus in the grounds of Thorp Perrow. With clowns, contortionists, jugglers and tumbling acrobats, there’s entertainment for all the family. Showtimes: 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm. Refreshments will be available. Children under 2 years old are free of charge, however they must sit on a parent or guardian’s knee. Admission into the Arboretum is not included in the circus ticket.
  • Friday 25 August – The fabulous Mercury – the ultimate Queen tribute band will be playing in the superb grounds of Thorp Perrow. Mercury are the UK’s most authentic live tribute to the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen. Hit after hit, anthem after anthem, the group will power out the band’s greatest songs. Performed in authentic costumes and with replica equipment, the show really is as close as it gets. Always a sell-out, so book now to avoid disappointment!

Base Camp for kids
Base Camp is an outdoor learning space in Baldersby Park, run by Hannah Secouet. Within the 90 acres of parkland, Hannah and her staff facilitate school visits, run an after-school club and also host holiday camps utilising all the wonderful natural attributes the park has to offer.

This coming summer holiday Base Camp is hosting four adventure days, each offering something very different.

  • Friday 18 August – Forest Olympics and well-being
  • Tuesday 22 August – Kayaking on the lake and forest adventure
  • Friday 25 August – Forest Art and African drumming in the woods
  • Tuesday 29 August – Archery with Thirsk Bowmen and forest adventure
  • Thursday 31 August – Forest School adventure

Music at Junction 50
The second concert in this year’s Junction 50 series will be held at 2.30pm on Saturday 2 September at St Lawrence Church in Carlton Miniott. The event will feature Mary Reid and brilliant Scottish folk singer, Ainsley Hamill. The pair met through their work with Live Music Now which supports young musicians to play in hospitals, care homes and schools for special needs pupils. They will provide a short programme of about 45 minutes duration and afterwards tea will be served. The event is free, but donations would be welcome.
Topcliffe Parish Council
There is no meeting of the Parish Council in August. The next meeting will be on Thursday 7 September at 7pm in the Village Hall.
Weekly art classes
The next block of six weekly art classes at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall starts on Monday 11 September. These classes, which run for two hours from 10am, are led by talented teacher/artist Rebecca Jayne. She’ll guide you with helpful tips and techniques and support you with creating your own artwork.

Artisan Market

Topcliffe Bridge repairs completed
Well it’s done! It might have taken three or four years for the work to be tackled but in the end the job is finished and looks good. The contractors have made a superb job of constructing the new parapet and a thank you is due to them and North Yorkshire Council for finally organising the contract.
Asenby play park survey
Today there’s a final chance to complete the questionnaire about Asenby’s play park. The Parish Council’s survey will close at midnight tonight (Sunday 16 July).

The survey aims to help guide what actions the Parish Council should take with regards to the play park’s future. There are nine questions and it should take no longer than five minutes to complete. It can be completed online using this link: https://tinyurl.com/Asenby-Park

The next Parish Council meeting is scheduled for 7pm on Thursday 27 July. The results of the survey will not be discussed at this meeting but a public meeting will be held at a date to be arranged.

The Topcliffe Big Race Night

Churchyard grass-cutting
Yesterday’s planned grass cutting working party at St Columba’s churchyard was cancelled due to the poor weather.

Another maintenance day is planned next Saturday 22 July from 10am. Please come along if you have an hour or two to spare.

The petrol filling station at Tesco in Thirsk is now reopened.
Chip ‘n Dales

Herriot Hospice @ The Lambert
A major fundraising campaign that aimed to raise £300,000 has smashed all expectations with almost £450,000 raised or promised. The cash is needed to complete the capital works on the Thirsk-based hospice. Now construction of the new local hospice can be completed and should open on track at the end of 2023.

The charity is looking for continued support and is asking the community in and around Thirsk to keep supporting the hospice to ensure its teams of nurses and other professionals delivering care across the district can offer the best care possible. Check out www.thelambert.org.uk

The Lion King comes to Topcliffe
Following a recent visit to London’s West End to see a performance of The Lion King, the 5 and 6 year olds of Maple class were inspired to recreate Disney’s fantastic musical.

The pupils’ version of the classic is on at Topcliffe CofE Academy on Tuesday 18 July. The performance starts at 1.30pm. Entry is free but by ticket, available from the school reception from Monday to Friday next week. There is limited availability so it’s a first come, first served basis.

Model Railway Show
The annual Model Railway Show is once again being held at Thirsk Town Hall. It will be on Sunday 30 July from 10am until 4pm. There will be eighteen layouts plus demonstrations, trade stalls, tombola, refreshments and a children’s competition. Adults £5 and accompanied children free. All profits to Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show

The organisation ‘Love Northallerton’is bringing back one of the biggest and most successful events of 2022. This year’s Jurassic Northallerton will see more dinosaurs than ever, with you all invited to witness and be a part of this great spectacle.

Topcliffe Summer Fair & Brunch
The annual Summer Fair and Brunch will take place at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall on Sunday 6 August between 10am and 3pm. Brunch will include bacon, sausage and egg butties plus coffee, tea and cakes.

Thirsk & Sowerby Festival on the Flatts
This annual family event will take place on Sunday 6 August starting at 10am. It’s a free fun day for all and promises to be bigger and better as every year more and more, bigger and better things are added to the list of attractions.
Family Events at Thorp Perrow

  • Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 August – Family Fun Weekend – There’ll be giant inflatables, soft play, archery, crafting and face painting. Visitors can also enjoy the Bird of Prey displays, walk the Summer Trail, eat at the Tea Room.
  • Wednesday 16 to Sunday 20 August – Thrills of the big top – Enjoy a fabulous, fun-filled family show in a traditional Big Top tent with the famous National Festival Circus in the grounds of Thorp Perrow. With clowns, contortionists, jugglers and tumbling acrobats, there’s entertainment for all the family. Showtimes: 11.30am, 1pm and 2.30pm. Refreshments will be available. Children under 2 years old are free of charge, however they must sit on a parent or guardian’s knee. Admission into the Arboretum is not included in the circus ticket.
  • Friday 25 August – The fabulous Mercury – the ultimate Queen tribute band will be playing in the superb grounds of Thorp Perrow. Mercury are the UK’s most authentic live tribute to the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen. Hit after hit, anthem after anthem, the group will power out the band’s greatest songs. Performed in authentic costumes and with replica equipment, the show really is as close as it gets. Always a sell-out, so book now to avoid disappointment!

The annual Thirsk festival gets underway on Friday 18 August and a full weekend of musical delight is on the cards. Read the full programme here.
Base Camp for kids
Base Camp is an outdoor learning space in Baldersby Park, run by Hannah Secouet. Within the 90 acres of parkland, Hannah and her staff facilitate school visits, run an after-school club and also host holiday camps utilising all the wonderful natural attributes the park has to offer.

This coming summer holiday Base Camp is hosting four adventure days, each offering something very different.

  • Friday 18 August – Forest Olympics and well-being
  • Tuesday 22 August – Kayaking on the lake and forest adventure
  • Friday 25 August – Forest Art and African drumming in the woods
  • Tuesday 29 August – Archery with Thirsk Bowmen and forest adventure
  • Thursday 31 August – Forest School adventure

Music at Junction 50
The second concert in this year’s Junction 50 series will be held at 2.30pm on Saturday 2 September at St Lawrence Church in Carlton Miniott. The event will feature Mary Reid and brilliant Scottish folk singer, Ainsley Hamill. The pair met through their work with Live Music Now which supports young musicians to play in hospitals, care homes and schools for special needs pupils. They will provide a short programme of about 45 minutes duration and afterwards tea will be served. The event is free, but donations would be welcome.
Topcliffe Parish Council
There was a meeting of the Parish Council last Thursday (6 July) and the Minutes will be published in due course. There is no meeting of the Parish Council in August. The next meeting will be on Thursday 7 September at 7pm in the Village Hall.
Weekly art classes
The next block of six weekly art classes at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall starts on Monday 11 September. These classes, which run for two hours from 10am, are led by talented teacher/artist Rebecca Jayne. She’ll guide you with helpful tips and techniques and support you with creating your own artwork.

Quiz night at the Village Hall
TONIGHT – the weekly Sunday quiz is on at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall. Come along at 8pm. The quiz is attracting a regular crowd each week and it has become a popular social evening. If you fancy testing your general knowledge and later having a chat with friends and neighbours, please come along. Bring your own drinks and nibbles. Glasses are available, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.
The Topcliffe Big Race Night
Planning is well underway for the annual Big Race Night at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall on Saturday 14 October. Sponsors have been confirmed for the eight race names and donations for the raffles are steadily coming together.

The next step is the sale of horse names. There are eight races with eight horses in each, so 64 horse names available. They are only £5 each. Churchyard grass-cutting
In an attempt to build on the excellent maintenance work undertaken recently, another working party is planned for 10am to 1pm next Saturday 15 July. The aim is to keep the grass neatly mown and to tidy up around the gravestones.

On that day a view will be taken on whether to do the same on the following Saturday (22 July) if there is any work still required.

2023 Produce Show
This year’s Topcliffe & Asenby Produce Show will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 2 September. The Show rules and list of display categories can be viewedhere and are also available on the Asenby and Topcliffe village websites.

Seems as though 10-year-old Oliver Robertson has come out of retirement to issue another edition of the Asenby News. He has published the latest edition with help from his sisters Evelyn, aged seven, and Connie, four.
Tesco Petrol
The petrol filling station at Tesco in Thirsk is closed until 17 July to allow essential maintenance work on the fuel tanks.
Chip ‘n Dales

The annual village fayre is on Saturday 15 July from 1pm until 11pm. During the day there’s all sorts of family attractions, stalls, games and food and drink. On the evening there’ll be a DJ from 5.30 to 8pm followed by a local band – Doubtful Bottle – playing from 9 to 11pm.
Artisan Market

The Lion King comes to Topcliffe
Following a recent visit to London’s West End to see a performance of The Lion King, the 5 and 6 year olds of Maple class were inspired to recreate Disney’s fantastic musical.

The pupil’s version of the classic is on at Topcliffe CofE Academy on Tuesday 18 July. The performance starts at 1.30pm. Entry is free but by ticket, available from the school reception from Monday to Friday next week. There is limited availability so it’s a first come, first served basis.

Jobs at The Angel
There are two more recruitment events scheduled at The Angel. They are on Tuesday 18 July and Tuesday 8 August, both at 6.30pm. Pop along if you are interested in jobs in all areas of the business.
Village Hall Committee
The next meeting of Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall Committee will be held at 7.30pm on Tuesday 18 July.
Soup & Sweet Lunch
The next Soup & Sweet lunch will be on Wednesday 19 July in theVillage Hall. Lunch served from 11.30am to 12.45pm. Selection of delicious soups followed by equally delicious cakes and bakes and tea or coffee. All welcome. No set charge, but donations welcome.

The last lunch raised £110, of which £50 was donated to the Salvation Army in Thirsk and the balance added to the Warm Hub Community Fund.

Beer and Pizza Night
Back by popular demand is the Beer & Pizza night at Thirsk Hall Sculpture Garden. It’s on Saturday 22 July from 6pm. There’ll be Bute Pizza, Fred & Bert’s and a fully stocked bar.

This event is sponsored by Hopical Storm from Timothy Taylor’s Brewery. Each ticket allows free entry to the Sculpture Garden.

  • Cafe artist of the month – all of July – Wardell – a contemporary artist who lives in Boroughbridge. Jenine uses whatever organic or recycled materials she can find, everything from wool to egg shells. She works in all mediums from oil, acrylic, textiles, glass and ceramics. Her sculptures are on display at the Elm Gallery in Topcliffe.
  • Fresh 2022 winner Eleanor Carney – to Saturday 22 July – a two week exhibition of the artist’s work depicting a visual biography of living with the chronic disease, Crohn’s.

Performances

  • A Midsummer Night’s Mischief – Thursday 3 August at 2.30pm – the fairies in the forest are starting a fight – but which side are you on? Team Titania or Team Oberon? Hoglets Theatre presents their interactive and larger-than-life version of Shakespeare’s summer comedy – especially for young audiences. Expect wild characters, raucous singalong songs, puppets, stunts and some frankly ridiculous disco dancing. Age guide 5+.
  • NT Live Screening: Fleabag – Thursday 7 September at 7.30pm – written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) . Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life.
