Walking tours of Thirsk
Historic Experiences, a company that organises guided walks in towns across the country, has turned its attention to Thirsk and launches a selection of walks this coming Bank Holiday weekend.

  • TODAY: Sunday 26 May at 3pm – Historic Thirsk, a walk through the town’s fascinating past – the places, people and events that made Thirsk what it is today.
  • TODAY: Sunday 26 May at 7pm – Haunted Thirsk – tales of haunted places and strange happenings in this ancient town.

Tours are fun for all and the routes are mainly flat. Tours take place no matter what the weather. The meeting place for all tours in The Clock in the Market Place, five minutes before tours are due to begin. Please contact Tina on 07876 010835 to book tickets or for more information.

Art in the Shed
Asenby resident, Siobhan Gifford, is one of the artists showing their work at an art exhibition and sale in Osmotherly over the Bank Holiday weekend – so you can see her work today and tomorrow(26 and 27 May). See poster here. Siobhan is showing examples of her mosaic artwork and pendants. The exhibition is showing at 19 Back Lane, Osmotherley between 10.30am and 1.30pm each day.

Some of Siobhan’s work is also currently on exhibition in The Elm Gallery in Topcliffe.
Village Quiz
TONIGHT: Sunday 26 May – The quiz is on at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall at 8pm.
Last week’s excellent quiz was set by Jane and won by Kev’s Crusaders, namely Debbie, Lynne, Kev and Mac. Well done the winners and everyone who took part.

The Chip ‘n Dales fish and chip van is in Topcliffe every Friday 5 ’til 7pm
Post Office vacancy
Topcliffe Post Office is looking for a part-time assistant who can assist behind the Post Office counter and in the shop. It’s for nine hours per week and applicants must be prepared to work at least one Saturday per month. Good rate of pay. CVs to Paul or Debbie at the Post Office.
Keep a look out for unusual behavior
Following a burglary at Dalton Village Hall during the night last week, other village halls in the area are being warned to be on the lookout for strangers checking out properties that they might target after dark. Those who attacked Dalton Village Hall gained nothing but did a substantial amount of damage to doors and cupboards. If you see strangers hanging around in Topcliffe and you are suspicious of their behavior, please call the police to report them. Even if it’s a false alarm the police will be happy that the community is watching out for itself and its properties.
Churchyard volunteers
John Phillips, representing St Columba’s Church, wishes to thank all of the volunteers who have given up their valuable time on Saturdays throughout May to help get St Columba’s churchyard into shape for summer. They are John, Joan and Charlie Blair, Richard Byas, Chris Joyce, Doug Allan, Linda Bumby, Karen Cussons, Steve Port, Clare Phillips, Julie, Fran Eckersley, Alison Cockburn, Liz Green, David Parkin and Chris & Linda Hewlett. Thanks also to Linda Carver who grew lots of plants from seed and has transplanted them into the flower beds…and to to those who provided ‘bakes’ for the coffee breaks each week.

It’s hoped that the good work can be continued throughout the summer and especially to start making progress on the lower terraces. At some time soon, it’s also hoped that more benches can be sited throughout the churchyard for people to enjoy this lovely green space in the heart of the village.
Footpath resurfacing
By and large the resurfaced footpaths on Long Street, Topcliffe look very good and they’ll certainly be safer for pedestrians. But one area down near the allotments and surgery needs further attention as a drainage problem that existed pre the work is still an issue. It’s understood that Cllr Dan Sladden has reported this to North Yorkshire Council and they have promised to send a team out to investigate and correct.

The next edition of The Tattler newsletter is at the printers and you can expect a copy through your door around the turn of the month.
Calling all book lovers
The café at Maple Park, near Busby Stoop, wants to start a book club and is looking for someone who is passionate about reading and would enjoy leading discussions about books.
You’ll need to be enthusiastic and well-organised to run the club every Wednesday morning from 9 until 11am. The café will provide free tea and coffee for all participants.

Soup & Sweet Lunch
The next Soup & Sweet lunch will be held at the Village Hall on Wednesday 29 May from 11.30 to 12.45pm. There’ll be a selection of home-made soups, puddings, delicious cakes and bakes and tea or coffee. All welcome. No set charge, but donations welcome.
Base Camp – Kids Adventure days
Bookings are now open for the Base Camps being held during the May half-term holidays.

  • Wednesday 29 May – Make your own musical instrument in Forest Schools and then get to play it in the afternoon with musician, Hayley, around the campfire.
  • Thursday 30 May – Follow in the footsteps of our ancestors as we forage for food and then make fire to cook it on.
  • Friday 31 May – Get creative as we explore natural art from around the globe before limbering up to take part in Forest Olympic Games.

The Angel Comedy Night

Open days at a range of local art and craft studios
Eric Moss, who lives and works in Asenby, is one of seven local artists in the Thirsk area opening their studio to the public as part of a North Yorkshire Open Studios event on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 June and Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June. Eric, whose ceramics works are pictured above, will be showing big and small ceramics for indoor and outdoor display. He is also displaying 3D printed resins and new bespoke ‘Pocket Art’ fidgets handmade in recycled pewter and glass. The other local studios will include photography, enamelling, jewellery, printing, painting and garden sculpture. The open studios can be visited between 10am and 5pm and a 10% discount will be given off any piece of artwork on sale at any of the studios if all seven studios are visited and the "passport" stamped. St Columba’s Festival
This year’s Festival and History Day will be held on Sunday 9 June. The event will be more simple than usual with just one day to celebrate St Columba. At 10.45am there will be a Festal Choral Eucharist led by Rev. Canon Steven Harvey and the choir will sing the Missa Secunda by Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) as the setting. Refreshments will be served after the service.

There’ll be a BBQ lunch with hot food being available from 1.15pm. Drinks, including wine, will be available along with ‘bring and share’ salads and puddings. Everyone is very welcome to either or both of these events. Please give advance notice to John Phillips (01845 577034) if you intend to come to the BBQ so that he has some idea of catering requirements.

After lunch the usual tours of the church, tower and churchyard will take place, but for reasons of safety, children will need to be at least ten years old to be able to climb the tower. The day will close with a service of Compline at 6pm.
Topcliffe Ceilidh tickets are selling fast
The Cod Beck Ceilidh Band will be providing the music and calling at the Topcliffe Ceilidh on Saturday 22 June at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall. Doors open from 7pm and dancing starts at 7.30pm. This is a bring your own drinks event. Tickets, which are on sale at Topcliffe Post Office, or from Sarah Barber on 07885 386557 or Jane Burnett on 07902 681296, are selling fast so to avoid disappointment get yours soon.

Tickets purchased in advance are £10, which includes a pulled pork and apple sauce roll (alternative for vegetarians). Tickets at the door on the night are £12. There’ll be a raffle with some great prizes. This is a fundraiser to help support the Village Hall.

Topcliffe & Asenby Produce Show 2024
The show will be held on Saturday 31 August at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall and there will be 83 classes in five categories: 47 horticultural classes: 17 baking, jams, preserves and pickles classes: 3 floral classes: 11 hobbies classes and 5 specific classes that only children can enter. Creative Club presents Minecraft

Poppy Project D-Day Concert
On Thursday 6 June between 7 and 10pm, Ripon Cathedral will host a special concert to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day and 75th anniversary of the Royal Engineers Freedom of the City of Ripon. The concert will include performances by Mark Sidwell, Ripon City Band, The Dishforth Military Wives Choir, The Duchy Belles and Charlotte Potter. The event is organised by Ripon Community Poppy Project and tickets are £15.

Conserving Nature
Nosterfield Nature Reserve is holding its next conservation club on Saturday 8 June between 10am and 1pm. It’s open for young people aged 14-18 years who enjoy working outdoors, are interested in finding out more about wildlife and keen to develop practical conservation skills. On the day, you’ll find out about how butterflies and moths are recorded at the reserve and help to identify and record species.

Tractor Fest
This year’s Tractor Fest will take place on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June at Newby Hall. It’s the UK’s largest vintage tractor and engine show with over 1,600 exhibits as well as in excess of 12,000 visitors who also get access to the award-winning gardens and other attractions. 10am-4pm. £60 family, £20 adult, £15 child, under 4s free. Flower Power Plant Fair

Music @ Junction 50
