The week’s Covid statistics

• The R number for England as a whole is currently 1.1 and 1.4. This means that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 11 and 14 other people.

• 46.8 million first doses given. 38.1 million second doses. 88.5% of the adult population has now had the first jab and over 72.1% the second.

• 192,251 people tested positive for Covid in the last week.

• There were 26,144 new infections yesterday. The daily number continues to fall.

• 6,341 people were admitted to hospital with Covid between 25 and 31 July.

• There were 71 deaths reported yesterday and 488 in the last seven days. That’s a 10% increase on the previous seven days.

• The total number of UK deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test now stands at 129,654.

• 154,000 deaths registered in the UK had Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.

• Worldwide, the global death toll is 4,229,747.

North Yorkshire figures

The weekly rolling average of new cases In North Yorkshire is 286 cases per day, slightly better than it was the previous week.

UK opens its borders to some international travel

From tomorrow, residents of the US and the EU will be able to travel to Britain without quarantine if they’re fully jabbed. The news will pave the way for families and friends to reunite without the threat of isolation and will provide a much-needed bounce for the UK’s inbound tourism industry. The plan to allow overseas visitors – and UK expatriates vaccinated abroad – to avoid self-isolation on entry from amber list countries will apply to arrivals into England, Scotland and Wales. The news comes ahead of an update to the traffic light system – the green, amber and red lists – due next week. Questions remain over the status of France (currently on the bespoke ‘amber plus’ list) and the ongoing infection surge in Spain.

Pregnant women urged to have jabs

England’s chief midwife has stepped up her call for pregnant women to get the Covid jab as soon as possible. Estimates based on GP records and Public Health England data suggest hundreds of thousands have not had the jab, as the number of mums-to-be in hospital with the virus rises. In the last three months, 171 pregnant women with Covid needed hospital care – but none had had both jabs. Now pregnant women are being proactively encouraged to get vaccinated. Since mid-April 2021, mothers-to-be have been offered the Pfizer or Moderna coronavirus jab, with the second dose recommended eight weeks after the first. Public Health England data suggests about 51,724 pregnant women have received one Covid vaccine so far. Of these, around 20,648 have had their second dose. This is out of approximately 606,500 pregnant women in England in 2020-21, based on estimates from GP records.

Covid Testing

• Test and Trace – Full details about the purpose of Test & Trace and how it works can be read at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/nhs-test-and-trace-how-it-works

• PCR Test – must be booked If you have symptoms. A full list of NHS testing sites can be viewed at https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/book-coronavirus-covid-19-test

• Lateral Flow Testing Kits – these tests are available free of charge to everyone. Rapid testing detects cases quickly, meaning positive cases can isolate immediately. You can order here: https://www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests?medium=email&source=GovDelivery

Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC)

You may not have heard of this yet, but it will become very familiar once everyone starts travelling abroad again. The Global Health Insurance Card is replacing the European Health Insurance Card or EHIC, which is being discontinued following Brexit. Both cards offer equivalent protection for emergency and medically necessary healthcare needs when in the European Union on a temporary stay. This includes holidays, study, and business travel. It’s important to understand what the GHIC covers – its name is a bit misleading as it’s not technically ‘global’, nor ‘insurance’. Check the expiry date if you already have an EHIC. You can carry on using an EHIC until it expires. EHICs are issued for five years so the expiry date might be several years away. If your EHIC has expired, is close to expiry, or you don’t have one, you should apply for a GHIC. Every member of a family requires their own GHIC, including children. You can apply online and the card will take about 10 days to arrive. Make sure you apply for your GHIC in plenty of time in case of delays with the card or the post.

Dog waste problems return

The problem of dog waste on village footpaths is back! This last week or two has seen dog dirt left on Whin Lane and Deans Square. Some villagers are so annoyed by the careless behaviour of a few, that they will report the offenders if they are seen and identified. Dog owners can be fined between £50-£80 on-the-spot if they fail to clear up after their dog’s mess. You have been warned.

Netball Summer Camp

Thirsk Netball Club has announced it is organising a netball summer camp based at Queen Mary’s School, Topcliffe. Players will work on their ball handling skills, footwork patterns and agility, learn and develop their attacking and defending strategies, play fun games, develop their game sense and play netball matches. The camps are being held between 9am and 3pm on Mondays 9 and 16 August. The cost is £25 per session. Participants will need to take suitable footwear and attire for the typical English weather as well as a packed lunch. Open to new and existing members. To book please email thirsknetballclub

Volunteers needed to help tourists…and local residents.

Thirsk’s information centre is entirely volunteer-run and is looking for a few more volunteers. It is interesting work meeting both visitors and lots of local people too! New volunteers will always be guided by an experienced volunteer Duty Manager. The centre is continuing to maintain sensible Covid safety precautions as it is important that volunteers and visitors feel safe and secure, so hand sanitisation, wearing of a face covering and the keeping of safe distance from one another is the rule. The general requirements include: willingness to agree a regular attendance, an average of one morning or afternoon three-hour shift a week is great. Experience in a customer-facing role would be helpful, but not essential. Knowledge of, and interest in Thirsk and North Yorkshire would be good, although other volunteers will help in this regard…and there’s lots of sources of information to check out. Basic IT skills, such as finding information online is always useful, but training will be given. If you might be interested in volunteering, please phone Jocelyn Caramello for a chat about it on 07482 084643.

Team tackle Himalayan Balsam

A team of volunteers rolled up their sleeves to tackle a huge clump of Himalayan Balsam at the Sheep Wash yesterday. Seedlings Nursery

The Seedlings Nursery attached to Topcliffe Academy is desperately trying to raise funds to replace a storage shed in which equipment is stored. The old hut has been condemned and a new one is likely to cost as much as £1,000. Several people in the village have offered to help raise cash, including Debbie Roberts at The Milk Churn Farm Shop who is organising a ‘guess the number of the seeds in a jar’ challenge. Karen Morley and Linda Carver have also agreed that any surplus raised at the next Soup and Sweet lunch at the Village Hall on Wednesday 4 August will be donated to the Seedlings Shed project. There’ll also be a raffle at the Afternoon Tea at the Village Hall on Sunday 1 August to raise more funds. If anyone can kindly offer a prize for the raffle please contact Karen on 01845 577426.

Sunday afternoon tea

There’s to be a Sunday afternoon tea at the Village Hall this afternoon between 3pm and 5pm. Those so inclined are welcome to bring along their own bottle of wine or fizz! If anyone would prefer to just pop in to collect their afternoon tea and take it away to consume elsewhere, that’s ok. Instead of paying a set price, those attending will be invited to leave a donation, which will go to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. There’ll be a raffle to raise cash for the Seedlings Shed project. If you have made anything to help this event, please deliver to the Village Hall between 1 and 2pm.

Soup and sweet lunch

Any surplus is donated to a different charity each week and this week it’s the Seedlings Shed project that will be assisted.

North Yorkshire Police say scamming fraud is rife in our county

North Yorkshire Police this week reported that two frauds are ‘absolutely rife’ in North Yorkshire and they asked if their warning message could be included in today’s email as a way of possibly preventing more people falling victim.

  1. Number Spoofing: More and more fraudsters are using technology which enables them to appear to be calling from a known phone number. For example, fraudsters may call victims from a number which appears as the same number as your bank. This clearly adds a layer of legitimacy to scams and underlines the fact that you cannot trust that the number displayed on your phone is actually the number the caller is using. The police or your bank will never ring and advise you to move or withdraw money so if you receive a call like this, you can be certain it is a scam. The only way to verify if a caller is who they say they are is to hang up the phone, dial a number of a friend or family member and check that it connects to them – this is because sometimes fraudsters can ‘hold’ your phone line and will still be on the line if you make another call after speaking to them. Once you have checked the fraudsters are not still on the line, find the phone number for the organisation who claimed to have called you before, such as your bank’s customer service number on their website or dial 101 to speak to the police. They will be able to verify if the call you received was genuine or not.
  2. Delivery text message scam:This scam involves you receiving a text or email from Royal Mail, DPD, Yodel, or another courier telling you that you have a parcel waiting to be delivered but that there is a charge to pay before you can receive it. The message asks the recipient to follow a link to input their details and pay the fee. This is simply a way for fraudsters to access your bank details. If you receive a message like this, delete it immediately. This type of fraud is often followed up by a telephone call from the fraudsters claiming to be your bank asking if you have answered a text from Royal mail, DPD etc (which you might have) and then telling you to move your money to a safe account i.e. the fraudsters account! Don’t fall for it.

Remember: The bank or Police will never ask you to move money.

Welcome to the 68th issue of this regular Sunday Email.

The week’s Covid statistics

• The R number remains 1.2 and 1.4. This means that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 12 and 14 other people.

• 46.5 million first doses given. 36.8 million second doses. 87.9% of the adult population has now had the first jab and over 69.5% the second.

• 309,742 people tested positive for Covid in the last week. That is an increase of 11% on the week before.

• Covid cases nationally are down for the fourth consecutive day. There were 31,795 new infections on Saturday – down from 46, 558 on Wednesday.

• 5,322 people were admitted to hospital with Covid between 18 and 24 July.

• There were 86 deaths reported yesterday and 447 in the last seven days. That’s a 57% increase on the previous seven days.

• The total number of UK deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test now stands at 129,044.

• 154,000 deaths registered in the UK had Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.

• Worldwide, the global death toll is 4,098,967.

North Yorkshire figures

The Covid picture in North Yorkshire is stark. The average number of cases is 570 per 100,000 people, the highest seen in the county, a significant rise on last week and above the England average of 520.

Vulnerable 12 to 15 year olds to get vaccination

The UK’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has recommended vaccinating children aged 12-15 if they are at higher risk of Covid due to:

  • Severe neurodisability (which could include conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism or epilepsy).
  • Down’s syndrome.
  • A severely weakened immune system, including some children with cancer.
  • Profound and multiple learning difficulties.

Those at higher risk who are already aged 16 or 17 can be vaccinated under existing rules. The JCVI has also recommended immunising 12-17 year olds who live with people who have a suppressed immune system, as a form of indirect protection. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is the only vaccine that has been approved for use in children in the UK, with a licence already granted for the vaccine to be used in the over 12s.

Many 18-30 year olds appear reluctant to get jabbed

Many young adults are still to get their first vaccine. Infections among people in their 20s are at record levels, with 1,155 in every 100,000 in the population testing positive, official figures suggest. Although more than 4 million under-30s received their first jab in the first three weeks after they became eligible, about 3 million have yet to come forward.

Self-isolation is a crucial tool against Covid

Government experts say self-isolation is still one of the main tools being used to try and stop Covid spreading. At the moment, you must self-isolate for 10 days if you have symptoms, test positive for Covid, live with someone who tests positive or has symptoms, or are told to isolate by contact-tracers. You must also isolate if you arrive in the UK from a red list country, or from an amber list country and are not fully vaccinated. If you are pinged by the NHS Covid app saying you have been in close contact with someone with Covid, you’re advised – but not legally obliged – to self-isolate for 10 days.

The Topcliffe & Asenby Produce Show

The 2021 Produce Show will be held on Saturday 28 August. The event is open to all residents of Topcliffe and Asenby, and individuals who grow produce on allotments within the boundaries of our two villages. There’ll be 47 horticultural classes. There’s also 16 baking/preserves classes, 3 floral classes, 10 hobbies classes and 5 classes just for children to enter. Oliver’s latest Asenby News (see attachment)

Eight-year old Oliver Robertson has issued the 5th edition of his newsletter, Asenby News. The main story promotes a picnic in the park to celebrate the end of Covid restrictions and community lockdowns. His proposal is that the picnic should be held on Asenby playing field starting at 2pm on Sunday, 22 August. The colourful publication is also full of news, jokes and riddles.

There’s to be a Sunday afternoon tea at the Village Hall on 1 August between 3 and 5pm. Those so inclined are welcome to bring along their own bottle of wine or fizz! And if anyone would prefer to just pop in to collect their afternoon tea and take it away to consume elsewhere, that’s ok. Instead of paying a set price, those attending will be invited to leave a donation, which will go to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. As mentioned above, there’ll be a raffle to raise cash for the Seedlings Shed project.

Help needed: it would be much appreciated if villagers would help by making cakes, scones, quiches, biscuits or sandwiches. Just bring them along on the day between 1 and 2pm so that there is time for them to be set out.

Soup and sweet lunch

The next soup and sweet lunch will be held on Wednesday 4 August at 12 noon. Instead of paying a set price for lunch, customers are asked to make a small donation according to their means. Any surplus is donated to a different charity each week. Last Wednesday’s lunch raised £72 for The Boot Shop in Easingwold, which provides opportunities for people who have disabilities and learning difficulties to undertake handicraft and other activities. The event on 4 August will raise cash for the Seedlings Shed project.

It’s not a secret any more!

Northallerton’s Secret Garden is having an Open Day on Saturday 7 August from 10 am till 3pm. This place is so secret that many visitors to the town’s High Street probably don’t know that it exists at all. But look down the alleyway next to Kitson butchers and Ramsdens and you’ll find this ‘island of tranquillity’ adjacent to the Zion United Reformed Church. The secret garden was created from several neglected gardens and is now a safe space where both people and wildlife can flourish. Volunteers tend the floral beds and grow an amazing range of fruit and vegetables for the town’s food bank. On the Open Day there’ll be lots to see and admire, refreshments will be available, and there’ll be plants, bird boxes and bug hotels for sale. Topcliffe resident Wendy Jeffries is a volunteer at the Secret Garden and she hopes that lots of villagers will take the time to pop in to see the wonderful work undertaken there.

New council for whole of North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire’s county and district councils are to be scrapped and replaced with a single authority covering the whole county. Though City of York Council will remain separate. Under the reorganisation plans, the current two-tier system, which has been in place since 1974, will be replaced with a unitary authority covering a population of 618,000. Currently, services including social care and education are run by North Yorkshire County Council, while the districts look after areas including planning and bin collections. It is expected that the new council will deliver all public services in the county from April 2023.

In line with the government’s relaxation of restrictions, the Village Hall Committee has decided to strike a balance in fully reopening the hall whilst maintaining personal safety. It is recognised that some members of the public want to get back to some level of normality as soon as possible whilst others will still feel uneasy or nervous if arrangements are relaxed too quickly. The hall is again available for any type of booking in the normal way, there is no capacity or special limits, social distancing is voluntary, kitchen and catering services can operate as normal, and there is no need for one-way systems within the hall. However, NHS Test and Trace will continue. Hirers and users will be asked to take responsibility for the way they operate. The new guidelines are available on the village website – https://www.topcliffe.org.uk/village-hall/up-and-coming-events/

Existing hirers of the hall will have free use until 31 December 2021. To encourage a new range of activities to get going, free use of the hall is also available to new group activities (this does not include commercial one-off or private hires for parties and social functions). Bookings for new activities and for events such as parties are now possible. Events planned for last year that had to be postponed due to the pandemic will be rescheduled in due course. Watch out for details of the Big Race Night and Challenge Quiz.

Sunday Email: Issue 67

Welcome to the 67th issue of this regular Sunday Email.

The week’s Covid statistics

• The R number is now between 1.2 and 1.4. This means that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 12 and 14 other people.

• 46.2 million first doses given. 35.7 million second doses. 87.8% of the adult population has now had the first jab and over 67.8% the second.

• 300,302 people tested positive for Covid in the last week. That is an increase of 40% on the week before.

• More than 51,870 new Covid cases were recorded in the UK on Friday, the highest figure in more than six months.

• 3,964 people were admitted to hospital with Covid between 6 and 13 July. England’s chief medical officer warned that Covid hospitalisations were doubling every three weeks and could hit "scary numbers" in future.

• There were 41 deaths reported yesterday and 284 in the last seven days. The total number of UK deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test now stands at 128,683 Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been nearly 154,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate. Worldwide, the global death toll is 4,095,913.

North Yorkshire figures

The number of Covid cases in our county is rising. North Yorkshire’s average is 355 per 100,000 people, a little above the England average of 345. More than 300 new cases are being reported in the county each day, the highest rate since 12 January. More than 80 Covid patients are in the main hospitals that serve the county, compared with 400-plus in January, but that number doubled in a five-day period.

Changes to restrictions starting tomorrow

The following relaxations to restrictions will come into force tomorrow:

• Social distancing – No limits on how many people can meet, 1m-plus rule removed (except in some places like hospitals).

• Face coverings are no longer required by law, but people are encouraged to take sensible precautions and wear masks in busy or enclosed spaces.

• Nightclubs can reopen, the table service only rule in pubs and restaurants ends, there’s no limit on guest numbers at weddings and funerals or on people attending. concerts, theatres or sports events. There are no restrictions on communal worship.

• Guidance on working from home will end, though it’s hoped employees will phase the return to their workplace.

• Limits on visitors to care homes will be removed.

• Guidance recommending against travel to amber countries will be removed.

• Adults fully vaccinated in the UK and children under eighteen, will no longer have to quarantine for 10 days after returning from amber-list countries. Last Friday however, it was announced that those returning from France will still have to isolate on their return.

• It will remain a legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive for Covid.

From 16 August:

• Those who are double-jabbed will not have to self-isolate if a close contact tests positive for Covid.

September: A review will take place to assess how prepared the country is for autumn and winter.

To mask or not to mask

The legal requirement to wear a face covering in shops, public transport and other enclosed public spaces will end tomorrow. It will be replaced with government guidance that recommends that face coverings are worn in crowded and enclosed spaces. Interestingly, England’s chief medical officer Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser

Sir Patrick Vallance say they will continue to wear face coverings in any crowded indoor setting, when asked to wear a mask by any competent authority or as a common courtesy if someone else is uncomfortable. Businesses and shops need to do all they can to protect their staff, as well as customers and that’s why most will be continuing to ask customers to wear a mask. They don’t want to have to close because staff are self-isolating, so wearing a facemask not only protects you, it protects other people and supports local business.

Likewise with social distancing, some people may not feel very confident as restrictions are lifted, so giving them space is important.

Covid symptoms change in those fully vaccinated

Those who have had two jabs have always known that being fully vaccinated is no guarantee against being infected by Covid…but that it would likely be less serious and not require hospitalisation. Now the Covid Symptoms Study led by Kings College, London is signalling that fully vaccinated people who are infected suffer different symptoms to those we generally think of. Their data shows that symptoms are milder and similar to those of a heavy cold – headache, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat and loss of smell. It seems that some people just think they have a bad cold but can actually be carrying and spreading Covid! So, the experts are advising that we all recognise cold-like symptoms as possible Covid and get tested to prevent further spreads and increases in rates.

Test and Trace

Full details about the purpose of Test & Trace and how it works can be read at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/nhs-test-and-trace-how-it-works

Covid Testing

Passport to international travel

The government has agreed new rules that allow people to travel to amber-list destinations as mentioned above. However, travellers will still be expected to have a pre-departure test before flying home from an amber list country and pay for a PCR test on or before day two of their arrival home. The NHS Covid Pass, but not the appointment or vaccination card, can be used as proof of Covid-19 status when travelling abroad. However, certificates can be requested to prove you have had both doses of the jab. These can be ordered online from https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/covid-pass/get-your-covid-pass-letter/ The certificate can be used on travels abroad, or at any event where you need proof you’ve had your vaccines.

The Topcliffe & Asenby Produce Show

The 2021 Produce Show will be held on Saturday 28 August. The event is open to all residents of Topcliffe and Asenby, and individuals who grow produce on allotments within the boundaries of our two villages. There’ll be 47 horticultural classes, so there’s lots of opportunity to grow some winners! There’s also 16 baking/preserves classes, 3 floral classes, 10 hobbies classes and 5 classes just for children to enter. Don’t forget that the Show Committee agreed a new rule last year, namely that only one entry can be placed in each category. Other to that the rules remain unchanged. As in previous years there’ll be two trophies in the horticultural section, one for the person with the most points overall and another for the person with most ‘firsts’. There’ll also be trophies for the winners in the other sections. The full list of rules, categories and classes is available on both village websites – www.topcliffe.org.uk and www.asenby.net or from Produce Show Secretary Judith Lowe (577911).

Walks around Thirsk

As the summer holidays approach many mums and dads will be looking out for things to do to keep youngsters busy and active. Short walks might be just the job, but short walks with a bit of local history could be a real winner Thirsk Tourist Information has put together a few walk suggestions you might like to try:

Past & Present – this pleasant walk around Thirsk and Sowerby via town and countryside trails takes about two hours. It visits 15 interpretation boards that tell the story of the town and surrounding area. There is a free app and a 50p booklet and map, also downloadable from VisitThirsk.uk/boards

Blue Plaque Trail: This is a walk around 20 historical sites in Thirsk and Sowerby marked by blue plaques. These record important buildings or people associated with the towns. The walk takes about 1½ hours and details are in a 50p booklet, or downloadable from VisitThirsk.uk/plaques

Ted’s Walks: one of the centre’s regular volunteers, Ted, has written five walks’ booklets

– 4 mile circular field walk from Thirsk via South Kilvington.

– 4 mile circular flat field walk to the west of Thirsk and back through Sowerby.

– 3 mile village and field walk – Sowerby, with Pudding Pie Hill.

– 6.5 miles circular field walk north of Carlton Miniott & Thirsk

– 1.5 mile circular walk around Thirsk centre suitable for pushchairs and most wheelchairs.

These walks are in individual booklets available from the information office at 60p each, or downloadable from VisitThirsk.uk/walks

Soup and sweet lunch

The next soup and sweet lunch will be held on Wednesday 21 July at 12 noon. Instead of paying a set price for lunch, customers are asked to make a small donation according to their means. Any surplus is donated to a different charity each week.

Sunday afternoon tea

Karen Morley and Linda Carver are organising an afternoon tea on Sunday 1 August. It will be at the village hall – either inside or outside depending on the weather – between 3 and 5pm. Those so inclined are welcome to bring along their own bottle of wine or fizz! And if anyone would prefer to just pop in to collect their afternoon tea and take it away to consume elsewhere, that’s ok. Instead of paying a set price, those attending will be invited to leave a donation. Any surplus will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Help needed: it would be much appreciated if villagers would help by making cakes, scones, quiches, biscuits or sandwiches. Just bring them along on the day between 1 and 2pm so that there is time for them to be set out.

Classic cars and motorcycles on show

Up to 400 of the very best classic vehicles will be on show at Stokesley Showground (TS9 5ER) on Saturday, 7 August, and it should make for a great family day out. There will be a dedicated motorcycle arena with the Yorkshire Coast British Motorcycle Club planning to bring over a dozen bikes. Also going on show in the arena is a rare 1967

British Velocette Thruxton one of only 441 ever made. Showtime is 10.30am to 4pm. https://classicsonshow.co.uk

Yorkshire Day

Sunday, 1 August, is Yorkshire Day which promotes the cultural and historical roots of Yorkshire County. This year York will be host to the Yorkshire Society and the official Yorkshire Day Civic Celebration. Yorkshire Day has enjoyed an increasing popularity and significance since it was first established in 1975. The decision to enhance the day and mark it with a formal civic gathering of Mayors, Lord Mayors, their attendants and other dignitaries ‘in full costume and regalia’ was taken in 1985. Every year since, The Yorkshire Society has awarded a town or city council the privilege of organising this official civic celebration, to formally mark the day and provide a worthy centrepiece for the thousands of public and private events that now take place. https://theyorkshiresociety.org/what-we-do/yorkshire-day/

Sunday Email: Issue 66

Welcome to the 66th issue of this regular Sunday Email. I’m not what you’d call a fanatical football supporter, but I do recognise the importance of today’s big game. It’s a long time since England were in the final of any football competition and it’s a first as far as the Euros are concerned. Of course, I’ll be watching the game and cheering on the best team England has had in years. Enjoy the match.

• 45.8 million first doses given. 34.5 million second doses. 86.9% of the adult population has now had the first jab and over 65.6% the second.

• 213,528 people tested positive for Covid in the last week. That is an increase of 30% on the week before.

• 3,081 people were admitted to hospital with Covid between 30 June and 5 July, an increase of 56% compared to the previous seven days.

• There were 34 deaths reported yesterday and 192 in the last seven days.

• The total number of UK deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test now stands at 128,399. Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have been 153,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

• Worldwide, the global death toll is 4,019,368.

Covid on the increase…again!

On Friday the latest government figures showed an increase of 35,707 Covid cases across the UK – the highest daily figure since 22 January. The percentage of people testing positive for Covid is estimated to have increased in all regions of England with the north-east having among the highest proportion of people of any region likely to test positive.

Here in North Yorkshire there were over 1,500 new cases reported last week. The weekly rolling average of new cases is 216 cases per day. The seven-day rate is 258 cases per 100,000 people, higher than the England seven-day rate of 257.

The rise in infections comes as plans are being made to allow more international travel

Since the start of the pandemic, people wanting to go on holiday abroad have had to deal with last-minute rule changes, cancellations and the potential of quarantine. The government’s latest announcements aim to end the months of travel uncertainty and use the protection of vaccines to open up travel again. From 19 July people who have had two doses of vaccine and any under-18s can travel to any of the amber list countries without facing a 10-day period of quarantine on return to England…meaning amber and green countries are treated as the same. However, travellers are warned that an amber list country could still turn red without notice, meaning tourists may still face disruption. And just because we can travel abroad it doesn’t automatically follow that ‘amber’ countries will accept UK holidaymakers. Each country has its own rules. On top of this there are still rules about Covid testing. In a nutshell, the unpredictables of overseas travel remain.

Pinging on the increase!

There has been a significant rise in the number of NHS app pings because of the recent surge in Covid infections. Some experts are warning that millions could be asked to self-isolate, with a knock-on effect for the economy and workplaces. It’s also feared many users are deleting the app, rather than running the risk of being asked to self-isolate. The government says the app may have to change because of the much-anticipated end of social distancing on 19 July. It is looking at tweaks to make it less sensitive, so it sends fewer alerts.

Anticipated changes to restrictions

Subject to further increases in the number of Covid cases and pressure on hospitals, the following measures are expected to be introduced from Monday 19 July:

  • Social distancing – No limits on how many people can meet, 1m-plus rule removed (except in some places like hospitals), face coverings no longer required by law.
  • Events and gatherings – Nightclubs can open, pubs and restaurants no longer table service only, no limits on guests at weddings and funerals or on people attending concerts, theatres or sports events. No restrictions on communal worship.
  • Guidance on working from home will end.
  • Limits on visitors to care homes will be removed.
  • It will remain a legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive for Covid.

And from 16 August:

  • Most Covid restrictions in schools – including ‘bubbles’ – will come to an end, ahead of the autumn term.
  • Those who are double-jabbed will not have to self-isolate if a close contact tests positive for Covid.

The Great Yorkshire Show

This year the show will run over four days for the first time in its history. Social distancing measures will be in place. The health and safety of staff, visitors, exhibitors and animals is paramount so new safety measures, including a limit on attendance to 25,000 visitors each day, are in place. There’s a packed timetable of competitions and displays. It’s on from Tuesday 13 to Friday 16 July – tickets are only available in advance and are now on sale. https://greatyorkshireshow.co.uk/

Monday Makers

Rural Arts is running a free ten-week course on ceramics as part of its Monday Makers series of events at Courthouse in Thirsk. There are still places available and applications are invited from anyone who might be interested. The sessions are open to all unemployed people, including those that are retired. The course begins on Monday 2 August and will run until 11 October, 10am – 1pm, except August bank holiday. As long as you are able to make the majority of sessions, then you will be eligible. The course covers a range of ceramics techniques, as well as concepts and design. There’ll be one session making polymer clay jewellery with Jane Burley. For further information email sorcha or visit www.ruralarts.org

Stamps

Samantha Key has asked for a mention about the collection of stamps that she has coordinated over the last year or so. She has recently sent off two full A4 envelopes worth of stamps which will be used to raise funds for the charity Support Dogs for Autism, for Epilepsy and for Disability. A big thank you to everyone who has supported this initiative.

Tomatoes

Samantha Key and her mum Nikki would like to thank everyone who purchased tomato plants from the stall on Long Street a few weeks ago. £30 has been sent to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Again, a big thank you to everyone who donated.

Soup and sweet lunch

Last Wednesday’s lunch at the village hall was very well attended and £63 was raised for the day’s selected charity – Community Works, in Thirsk. The next soup and sweet lunch will be held on Wednesday 21 July at 12 noon. Instead of paying a set price for lunch, customers are asked to make a small donation according to their means. Any surplus is donated to a different charity each week.

Sunday afternoon tea

As everyone attending the recent soup and sweet lunches appeared to have had such a great time meeting up and having a good chin wag, Karen Morley and Linda Carver have decided to organise an afternoon tea on Sunday 1 August so that more friends and neighbours can meet together. It will be in the village hall – either inside or outside depending on the weather – between 3 and 5pm. Those so inclined are welcome to bring along their own bottle of wine or fizz! And if anyone would prefer to just pop in to collect their afternoon tea and take it away to consume elsewhere, that’s ok. As with the lunches, instead of paying a set price those attending will be invited to leave a donation. Any surplus will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Help needed: it would be much appreciated if villagers would help by making cakes, scones, quiches, biscuits or sandwiches. Just bring them along on the day between 1 and 2pm so that there is time for them to be set out.

SummerTime Fest

Sunday Email: Issue 65

Welcome to the 65th issue of this regular Sunday Email. It was wonderful to see England’s footballers beat Germany last week and Ukraine last night. The team is on a roll and let’s hope their success continues on Wednesday when they face Denmark in the semi-final.

The week’s Covid statistics

• The R number has reduced marginally to between 1.1 and 1.3. This means that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 11 and 13 other people.

• 45.1 million first doses given. 33.4 million second doses. 85.7% of the adult population has now had the first jab and over 63.4% the second.

• 164,290 people tested positive for Covid in the last week. That is an increase of 70% on the week before.

• There were 1,953 patients in hospital with Covid between 23 and 29 June, an increase of 24% compared to the previous seven days.

• There were 18 deaths reported yesterday and 118 in the last seven days.

• The total number of UK deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test now stands at 128,471.

• Worldwide, the global death toll is 3,987,466.

Covid restrictions announcement expected this week

The official date of the next step to remove restrictions is Monday 19 July, but it’s anticipated the Prime Minister will make an announcement this coming week. Though it’s looking likely most restrictions will end, it’s clear that some, such as social distancing and the use of face masks, may be retained for the foreseeable future. The British Medical Association is calling for the continued use of face masks and new ventilation standards. It says that targeted measures are still needed to protect the NHS, health and education amid what it says is an alarming rise in cases.

North Yorkshire Covid report

At 27 June, there had been 32,188 positive tests since 3 March 2020. 1,420 new cases were reported in the past two weeks. The weekly rolling average of new cases is 82 cases per day. The 7-day rate for North Yorkshire is 143.7 cases per 100,000 people, lower than the England 7-day rate of 158.9. The number of people being hospitalised with the virus is significantly lower than in previous waves – 22 are in hospitals serving the North Yorkshire population, one down from last week.

Thank You Days

Today is National Thank You Day and tomorrow is NHS, Social Care and Front-Line Workers’ Day. It’s a while since the public demonstrated their appreciation of the selfless service given by so many front-line workers, so these special days offer us the chance to say a big THANK YOU to all those nationally who have helped bring us to this point over the past 16 months. And more locally, it’s a chance to pay tribute to all those great volunteers in North Yorkshire who have helped to protect the vulnerable or have helped out with family, friends and neighbours.

Misleading claims about Delta deaths

Some people, including those pushing an anti-vaccine agenda online, have been claiming a large proportion of those dying with the Delta variant of coronavirus had been vaccinated. One conspiracy site even claims vaccinated people are dying at higher rates than those who had not received the jab, both of these statements are untrue – the vaccine is reducing cases. The site uses real figures in a misleading way, to arrive at a completely false conclusion – that the vaccine may not be working or even doing more harm than good. Official figures clearly demonstrate that’s not the case.

Furlough Scheme changed on 1 July

The government’s furlough scheme, which offers support to employees out of work due to the Covid pandemic, changed from Thursday 1 July. Official figures show around 3.4 million people are on furlough, with a total of 11.5 million jobs supported by the scheme over the course of the pandemic. Until 30 June, employers kept workers on the payroll and paid 80% of salaries, up to £2,500 per month. Now employers have to take on more of the costs, paying 10% of their furloughed workers’ salaries while the government covers the remaining 70%. Workers will see no change to wages and will still receive 80%. However, this is probably the beginning of the end of the scheme, which has so far cost taxpayers over £66 billion. From

1 August, the amount employers will pay rises to 20% until the scheme comes to an end in September – by which time all Covid restrictions should have been lifted.

Stamp Duty Holiday

The stamp duty holiday introduced in July 2020 was designed to boost the property market by helping buyers whose finances were affected by Covid. It meant buyers didn’t have to pay the tax on the first £500,000 of their purchase price, meaning a saving of up to £15,000. From last Thursday, 1 July, stamp duty will kick in again on prices above £250,000. From 1 October rates are due to return to normal, meaning the starting point for paying the tax will revert back to £125,001 and there’ll be 2% to pay on prices between £125,001-£250,000. According to the Nationwide Building Society the stamp duty holiday definitely stimulated the housing market, with house prices rising 13.4% in the year to June, the fastest pace since November 2004.

Holiday position still confused

Malta, Madeira, the Balearic Islands and a number of Caribbean destinations are among the places added to the travel green list. Holidaymakers will no longer have to self-isolate on their return to the UK from them. However, all these additions – apart from Malta – are on the ‘green watchlist’, which means that they are at risk of being moved to amber. The government says people should give extra consideration when booking holidays to these destinations because if there is a sudden change in conditions, a country may be moved between lists without warning. An added complication announced by Malta last week is that they will only accept a letter from the Health Department as proof of vaccination – the NHS app will not be accepted. Worse, Malta is also asking for proof that children aged 12 to 17 have had their jabs, yet the UK isn’t yet vaccinating this age group!

Bird feeder thieves

It has been reported before that vandals had destroyed the bird feeders hung in the trees along Winn Lane. Sadly, there are now reports that the bird feeders are being systematically stolen! The feeders are maintained by Malcolm and Karen Morley at their own expense and they are devastated that someone is determined to destroy their attempt at looking after local wildlife. It’s hard to understand why anyone would pinch these feeders and ruin the opportunity to see birds flocking to these sites.

Art classes are underway

A new art class has been launched at the Village Hall in Topcliffe. It is run by Becky Jayne between 9.30 and 11.30am on Monday morning. Each week attendees work with a different material or can opt to work in a choice of their own. Payment – £12.50 per session – can be made by BACs in advance or on the day. Ash trees to be removed along A168

Auto-Link, the company that maintains the A168 trunk road on behalf of Highways England, will this week start removing ash trees suffering from ash dieback. Initially the removals will be on the side of the northbound road but later more works will be required on the southbound side. The work will be carried out overnight (8pm to 6am) starting Monday 5 July. The work is being done at night so that the highway can be kept open: daytime work would require lane closure and unacceptable levels of congestion. Any queries should be directed to Auto Link on 01642 560637.
