Social media risks at holiday time
It’s the peak of the summer holidays and many of us will be planning on jetting off to the sun or even taking a ‘staycation‘ here in the UK. The temptation whilst away enjoying ourselves is to keep in touch with friends and family, via social media sites showing them photographs of the places visited and the experiences being had. But posting your holiday photos not only tells your friends and family you’re having a good time it also advertises to criminals that you’re away and your house is empty.

Many insurers now have an exclusion stating that if you post photos advertising the fact that you are on holiday, you may not be covered if your house gets burgled. If your insurer does not have a specific Social Media Exclusion, they will have a general condition often called a ‘Duty of Care’ which states that you must take reasonable precautions to try and prevent a claim. Advertising that you are on holiday is like placing a sign on your front door stating your house is empty.

There are some steps you can take to keep safe:

  • Wait until you get back – Post your photos when you get home.
  • Lock down your social media – keep your social media settings private so only your friends and family can see them.
  • Turn off location services – if this is on and linked to your social media accounts then it will post your location.
  • Check your friends list – have a clear out of anyone who shouldn’t be there.
  • Remove personal details you don’t need – check online to see just what you can find out about yourself. Remove information that you don’t want to share.
  • Make sure you’re not tagged – ask friends/family not to tag you and warn them only to post when you’ve returned home. Adjust settings so you can review anything you are tagged in.
  • Check your insurance policy – read the small print or contact your insurer to check for any clauses relating to posting on social media.

Librarian required
The Village Hall requires someone to take charge of the library in the ground floor committee room. The main task is to sort the book collection into alphabetical order by author, including books already on the shelves but also those returned by lenders and now stacked up on tables. It might take a couple of hours to put right and then an hour, say, once per month. However, if the volunteer would like to organise ‘open hours’ when the public can pop in (perhaps to coincide with sessions of the Soup & Sweet lunches), that would be welcomed. Contact Doug Allan on 07785 223707 if interested.
More bridges to be repaired

Watch out for the work getting underway in the next couple of weeks. Signs will be erected advising of the closure when a date from the contractor has been received.

Another scam warning
The public are being warned to be aware of scam text messages claiming to be from central government offering the recipient a Living Payment of £899. The link in the text sends you to a fake website that will harvest your personal information, including your bank details. All Cost of Living payments are sent out automatically and directly to those eligible, and recipients do not need to apply or contact the government at any stage.
Get reCycling – donate old bikes
Families who have unused bikes are being encouraged to donate them to the Get reCycling campaign, which returns to North Yorkshire household waste recycling centres during August. The bikes will in turn be donated to schools and community groups via the Brownlee Foundation and York Sport, where they will be used for cycle training.

Many bicycles sit in sheds and garages unused, either because they need repairs, or the bike has been outgrown or replaced with a newer model. For that reason, part of the campaign will focus on signposting people to low-cost bike repair workshops and social cycling opportunities around North Yorkshire, where bikes can be fixed and put back into use with new friends.

The campaign, which will run throughout August, is organised by Yorwaste, which manages household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) on the county council’s behalf. http://GET reCYCLING Campaign – Yorwaste

The Brownlee Foundation and York Sport are the main charity partners for this year’s campaign. The campaign will reflect the objectives of the Brownlee Foundation, which was founded by Olympic triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, to inspire children from all backgrounds to enjoy sport, encourage them to lead active lifestyles and benefit from the opportunities sport provides.

Our local HWRC is on Ox Moor Lane in Sowerby.
