Thank you to last year’s sponsor
It’s a year since Faro Finance agreed to sponsor the Sunday Email in order to cover fees that have to be paid to Mail Chimp, the platform on which the email is published. This is the final week of their sponsorship.

I am very grateful to Faro for the support the company has given and I wish them every success in the future.

In 2024/25 the cost of the Sunday Email will be covered from a small advertising surplus on The Tattler account and support received from the Warm Hub Community Fund. The support of the volunteers behind the Warm Hub is greatly appreciated.

Topcliffe Academy excellent SIAMS report
Just before half term Topcliffe Church of England Academy had a SIAMS inspection. That’s a Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools – an assessment to see how the school is upholding its Christian foundations as a church school. Now headteacher Abi Clay has shared the inspector’s report.

A full copy of the short report can be read here, but in summary it states that the school is an incredibly nurturing and inclusive school where everyone lives by the Christian values of compassion and respect in everything it does. It was noted that collective worship is at the heart of the school and that the children are able to talk confidently about theology, philosophy and debate ethics and injustice as part of their everyday language.

Driving and mobile phones
Over the next few weeks North Yorkshire Police will be supporting a national campaign targeting drivers using their hand-held mobile telephone whilst driving. It’s illegal to use a handheld phone while driving a motor vehicle on the roads in the UK and even using a hands-free option can incur penalties if your driving is deemed to be dangerous. Drivers using a phone are four times more likely to be in a crash.
The police have the right to stop anyone who they think may have been distracted and not in control of their vehicle, and prosecution could follow.

Some drivers apparently believe they can use their phone if stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic, or when their engine automatically cuts out when the vehicle stops, but all these actions are also illegal. And you can’t use a phone whilst supervising a learner driver nor are you allowed to hold or use a device that’s offline or in-flight mode when driving your car.

You can use a hand-held phone when safely parked and the engine is off, and if you need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it’s unsafe or impractical to stop. Interestingly, you can use your phone when making a contactless payment in a vehicle that is not moving, for example at a drive-through restaurant.

You can use hands-free mobile devices while driving as long as you do not hold them at any time during usage. The device must not block your view of the road and traffic ahead.

Breaking the rules can lead to getting six penalty points on your licence and a £200 fine. Anyone getting six points within two years of passing their driving test will lose their licence.

You can get three penalty points if you don’t have a full view of the road and traffic ahead or proper control of the vehicle. And having points on your licence will result in higher insurance costs.

Beware the rogue traders
As spring approaches it’s time to start thinking about all those jobs around the house and garden that need attention. Rogue traders know that this is a good time to visit and suggest that they can help out.

"I’ve been doing some work at one of your neighbour’s house and I noticed you have a loose roof tile", is a common introduction but you should never be pressured in to having any work done by a cold caller. You don’t have to engage with any cold caller and you can close the door on them and, if you feel threatened, call 999.

Unfortunately, some cold callers come across in conversation as caring and helpful, but this can be a ploy to con vulnerable people in to paying for unnecessary work, or believing work is being carried out for a much larger cost than it should be.

Rogue traders will suggest work to many areas of your house and garden, including slipped tiles, overgrown trees and bushes, driveways, double glazing, solar panels and security systems, but they are probably not qualified to undertake any of these tasks and are simply after your cash.

If you need to carry out repairs or maintenance on your building, do your research. Try to deal with locally recognised traders with whom you can speak face to face. Ask friends and family for recommendations. Don’t feel tempted to go with someone offering cash in hand prices to avoid tax and paperwork.
If you need to make a complaint about a trader, product or to report a scam, you can speak to North Yorkshire Trading Standards on 0808 223 1133. You can find more information here: https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/business-and-economy/trading-standards/consumer-advice

If you have any information about rogue traders you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 anonymously. If you need to report an incident to the police, or want to speak to one of your local officers, you can call 101. Alternatively, you can visit http:// www.northyorkshire.police.uk

Village Hall – more bookings cancelled due to water leak
The Village Hall Committee has had to cancel more bookings due to the water leak and work to put it right. All bookings to Friday 9 February have now been cancelled.

The water is still turned off meaning that there is no water available to the kitchen or toilets and access to the hall is difficult until the problem is resolved. Thirsk-based TWC Drain Care are working on the problem and are installing a completely new water system within the Village Hall site.

Hopefully no further bookings beyond Friday 9 February will be affected but there is no guarantee at this stage. A decision will be made in the light of developments and progress on the works.

Bookings Clerk required for Village Hall
The Village Hall Committee is on the lookout for someone with an administrative and/or financial background to run the hall’s online booking service. There’s an electronic booking service in place but this needs an element of management and liaison with users. An honorarium will be offered at the rate of £15 per hour and by trial and experience it is anticipated that between 6 and 8 hours per month will be required. Training will be available. For a chat about this opportunity, please call either Andrew Eckersley on 07966 619016 or Nicky Wood on 07968 008261. Please submit your details to alieneck4000

Local milk and dairy produce services
Since Anne-Marie Barningham’s retirement several residents have asked for information about alternative door to door delivery services to households in Topcliffe and Asenby.

Although Anne-Marie can no longer deliver, she continues to supply a pick-up service for milk and eggs, and will order in other dairy products to order. You can collect items from the farm on Long Street, Topcliffe and call Anne-Marie on 07740 175311 to order produce.

The Post Office on Long Street sells milk.

Two family businesses are operating locally and are happy to take orders for home delivery:

Pop up for some marmalade
Asenby resident Clare Phillips is organising a pop up stall at her home, Asenby Hall, next Saturday 3 February to sell her amazing homemade range of marmalades. There’s three varieties – Seville orange, Seville orange with lemon and lime and Seville orange with grapefruit. Various sizes and prices in the range of £3 to £4, with smaller jars available at a cheaper price. Cash only please. The stall will be open 10am to 12 noon. Can’t make it? Call round at Asenby Hall at anytime or call Clare on 01845 577034 to place an order.
Traffic complaint
Topcliffe resident Linda Robinson, who lives on Front Street near the school, is the latest to complain to the authorities about speeding traffic through the village. Recently she wrote to North Yorkshire Police’s traffic unit to draw attention to an increasing concern about speeding motorists and farm vehicles…and the risk of injury to locals, especially schoolchildren. Her main points were:

  • Vehicles passing her home and the school in both directions are travelling far too fast – the 30 miles per hour speed limit is regularly ignored.
  • There should be a 20 mile per hour speed limit in the vicinity of the school.
  • Many residents along this part of Front Street/Station Road have concealed entrances and they face extreme danger from speeding traffic every time they attempt to leave their premises.
  • Traffic in the early and late hours are particularly ignoring speed limits as they presumably believe there will be no speed checks at those times. So, speed checks need to be carried out at different times of the day – not just during ordinary working hours.
  • Living in a rural area it is appreciated that farmers have to carry out their day to day tasks, but many huge tractors, often with trailers, are driven through the village at breakneck speeds.
  • There does not appear to be any policing of the seven-tonne weight limit. Large HGVs regularly flout the restriction and add to the traffic dangers throughout the village, but particularly near the school.
  • More police attention and publicity needs to be given to the problems of speeding so as to improve road safety in villages.
