New Facebook page for parents in Topcliffe and surrounding villages
A new Facebook group was launched in Topcliffe last week to bring together parents and grandparents in the village and surrounding communities, including Asenby, Baldersby, Catton, Dalton and Rainton. It aims to create a platform for discussion about topics of mutual interest and share information about activities, groups, relevant local services and support…and possibly opportunities for get-togethers. In particular, the group will aim to promote the enjoyment, safety and development of local children. The full name of the group is Topcliffe, Asenby & Surrounding Village Parents.

Other community-based Facebook pages in our two villages are:

  • Top Residents
  • Asenby Residents
  • Alanbrooke Barracks
Quiz Night at The Angel
The Sunday evening quiz – tonight at 8pm in The Angel. It’s a really good night with a lot of fun and some lighthearted banter between teams and with the quiz master! • 29 January – No service (5th Sunday).
Asenby Parish Council
Unfortunately, there has still been no interest from members of the Asenby community in filling the two vacancies on the Parish Council. This leaves only three councillors running the business of the village. It also means that if just one of the councillors can’t attend a meeting, say because they are ill or away on business or holiday, the meeting can’t proceed as it would not be quorate. Such uncertainty makes it very difficult to run the council smoothly and efficiently.

If any eligible resident is interested in being co-opted (rather than elected) to the Parish Council, please get in touch with the Acting Parish Clerk, Peter Palmer 01845 578057.

Topcliffe & Asenby Community Warm-Up
Warm-Up lunches take place at the Village Hall on Wednesdays between 11.30am and 1.30pm.

If you can donate any prepared food or ingredients or would like to help in some way, please get in touch with Karen Morley on 01845 577426 or Linda Carver on 01845 578014.

Knit and Natter

Wanted: maintenance volunteers at Byland Abbey
Byland Abbey, which has a rich history and sits within the heart of North Yorkshire, is looking for volunteers to assist with general caretaking and maintenance. This is the first time English Heritage is offering volunteer opportunities at the site. Maintenance Volunteers will be part of a team helping to protect and preserve the site for the future. The majority of tasks will be small-scale maintenance such as fixing new signage in place, repairing existing fixings, painting small items, repairing fencing and gates, pruning branches (normally to make signs visible), lubricating joints/hinges on doors, gates and windows and renewing gravel/soil areas where puddles form. While on-site, volunteers are likely to meet visitors who may wish to chat about jobs underway and why volunteering is so important. There are no set hours and volunteers can fit the their volunteering around their life, giving their time as and when is convenient. Go to Portal Community First Yorkshire to learn more and apply.

So, if you’ve made a resolution to take more action for nature this year, Birdwatch is a great way to start.

The Repair Cafe
The next repair cafe will be held on Saturday 28 January between 10am and 1pm at Thirsk Community Library on Chapel Street. It’s a chance to get items such as small appliances, computers, toys, tools and clothes repaired. It’s much better to try and give things a new life rather than bin them.

Quiz Night at The Angel
It’s a mystery why so few villagers join in the weekly quiz on a Sunday evening. It’s a really good night with a lot of fun and some lighthearted banter with the quiz master! It’s held in The Angel and starts at 8pm. It would be great to see some new faces, so please come along to test your general knowledge and enjoy yourselves. Asenby Parish Council
Unfortunately, there has been no interest from members of the Asenby community in filling the two vacancies. The date for nominations past last Monday and no names were put forward. This leaves the three remaining councillors to run the Parish Council. Last week’s planned Parish Council meeting had to be cancelled as one of those three councillors was ill and couldn’t attend, meaning the meeting was not quorate. That problem is likely to repeat itself, making it very difficult to run the council smoothly and efficiently.

Harrogate Borough Council will determine if and when another advertisement for parish nominations will be placed. Until then the three remaining councillors will do their best to manage village business. In the meantime, if any eligible resident is interested in being co-opted (rather than elected) to the Parish Council, please get in touch with the Acting Parish Clerk, Peter Palmer 01845 578057.

Topcliffe & Asenby Community Warm-Up
Warm-Up lunches take place at the Village Hall on Wednesdays between 11.30am and 1.30pm.

Last week 43 meals were served and £170 was raised of which £50 was donated to the Thirsk branch of the British Legion, with the remainder going into the Community Warm Up fund.

If you can donate any prepared food or ingredients or would like to help in some way, please get in touch with Karen Morley on 01845 577426 or Linda Carver on 01845 578014.

Knit and Natter
The Knit & Natter group meets every Thursday at 1.30pm in the TV lounge at The Angel. The cost for refreshments remains at £3 and everyone is welcome to attend, whether for a knit, just for a natter or both!
Sad end for Asenby Institute
No Asenby residents attended the Special General Meeting of Asenby Institute last Wednesday (11 January) so this fundraising community organisation has now effectively closed down. Former committee members Fred and Siobhan Gifford will continue to act as signatories on the bank account until the money held has been dispersed in line with the Institute’s constitution.
Slow Cooker workshop
Preparing meals and other food using a slow cooker can save money and energy! And in these times of financial and energy crisis, any savings that can be made are bound to be welcomed by households. So it doesn’t seem so strange to hear that North Yorkshire County Council’s ‘Stronger Communities’ unit is organising workshops to demonstrate how slow cookers can be used to cook a variety of food, from bread to cakes and from stews to puddings.

But unfortunately, there can only be three events in each area of the county and the demo planned locally in Thirsk on Thursday 26 January is 100 per cent over-subscribed. The Stronger Communities unit has been asked if it will stage a slow cooker event in Topcliffe and it has agreed to keep the village in mind if extra funding can be found to organise more demonstrations.

Neighbourhood Watch
There isn’t an active Neighbourhood Watch scheme operating in either Topcliffe or Asenby though there are stickers on some properties warning off potential burglars. In the past, a few residents did act as Neighbourhood Watch volunteers but enthusiasm for being involved fell away.

Because I never entirely cancelled my involvement, I continue to receive occasional newsletters from the Neighbourhood Watch and starting today I intend to include them in the Sunday Email so that those who have an interest in protecting their own property and watching out for their neighbours, can get the latest information and advice.

This edition covers articles on the new government emergency alerts system, some advice on preventing burglary, how to protect yourself and friends from romance fraud, understanding how to ‘secure by design’, how to avoid Amazon scams, and how to find a trusted locksmith.

The January newsletter can be viewed here – https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/sites/default/files/documents/2023-01/Jan%202023%20OUR%20NEWS.pdf

Quiz Night at The Angel
The first quiz night of the New Year will be held this evening at 8pm at The Angel. It’s a really good night with a lot of fun and some lighthearted banter with the quiz master! So come along and enjoy yourselves. The Angel really make us welcome even offering a bottle of wine for a monthly draw. Hope to see more residents joining in in the New Year.
Services at St Columba’s

  • TODAY – 10.45am- Holy Communion and at 6.30pm Choral Evensong for Epiphany.
  • 15 January at 10.45am – Choral Matins.
  • 22 January at 10.45am – Holy Communion.

Topcliffe Surgery
Last week it was reported that Topcliffe Surgery has experienced significant numbers of ‘no-shows’ – people not turning up for appointments. In December alone, ninety-six appointments were wasted due to non-attendance, with twenty-six of these in the week before Christmas.

Since highlighting this problem (but really not claiming any credit) there has been a big improvement: in the week Friday 30 December to 5 January, the practice had only ten appointments wasted due to non-attendance. Still far too many, but much better than previous weeks.

Surgery managers realise that In an ever-busy world, there will be occasions when it’s impossible to keep to an arranged time and date, but they appeal to anyone who can’t keep an appointment to let the surgery know. This enables staff to offer the slot to another patient.

Asenby Parish Council

1. Meeting cancelled
The meeting of the Parish Council scheduled for tomorrow, 9 January has been cancelled because of illness. The unavailability of one of the three remaining members of the council means the meeting would be inquorate.

2. Parish Council vacancies
As reported in recent Sunday Emails, there are two vacancies on Asenby Parish Council. The formal closing date for nominations is 5pm Monday 9 January. It’s hoped that eligible village residents will put their names forward by the closing date. If two eligible persons apply to join the Parish Council they would be automatically ‘elected’, but if more than two step forward, an election would be held no later than 14 March 2023.

If nobody puts their name forward, eligible residents can be co-opted onto the council…but right now no potential co-optees’ names have been put forward.

Bus fares capped at £2
Passengers using local buses should see a maximum fare of £2 charged until the end of March. Most bus operators, including Reliance, have joined the Get Around initiative to promote the government-subsidised fare. This includes these services: 19, 19M, 29, 30, 30X, 30SE, 31X, 40 and 70. Fares lower than £2 and free concession passes are unchanged.

The scheme will help families, commuters and other passengers save money this winter, backed by £60 million of government investment to cap single tickets at £2 until 31 March. The scheme seeks to get more commuters on buses and help to reduce emissions and congestion by taking an estimated 2 million cars off the roads.

Full government information on this and other Yorkshire bus companies’ £2 fares is at http:// https://www.gov.uk/guidance/2-bus-fare-cap#yorkshire-and-the-humber

Courier Fraud – warning!
North Yorkshire Police are warning that in the post-Christmas period they are receiving increasing numbers of reports of what is classed as ‘Courier Fraud’. This often involves a fraudster contacting a victim by telephone purporting to be a police officer or bank official. To substantiate this claim, the caller might be able to confirm some easily obtainable basic details about the victim such as their full name and address. Once ‘trust’ is established, the victim is asked to withdraw cash from their bank or to take some other action to help an investigation. Please be fraud aware and remember the police will never ask anyone to move money or withdraw money to assist in an investigation.
Topcliffe & Asenby Community Warm-Up
Warm-Up lunches take place at the Village Hall on Wednesdays between 11.30am and 1.30pm.

Last week’s lunch raised £101.50 of which £50 was donated to The Blue Cross animal rescue service in Topcliffe, with the remainder going into the Community Warm Up fund.

If you can donate any prepared food or ingredients for a forthcoming lunch or would like to help in some way, please get in touch with Karen Morley on 01845 577426 or Linda Carver on 01845 578014.

The Knit & Natter group meets every Thursday at 1.30pm in the TV lounge at The Angel. The cost for refreshments remains at £3 and everyone is welcome to attend, whether for a knit, just for a natter or both!

There isn’t a similar special collection for Harrogate residents so those living in Asenby will have to make arrangements to dispose of their tree at a local Household Waste Recycling Centre. The nearest is located near Thirsk (Ox Moor Plantation Lane, Sowerby, Thirsk YO7 1FA) and it’s open everyday except Wednesdays.

Winter star gazing at Sutton Bank
There’s a star gazing opportunity at the Star Hub located at Sutton Bank National Park Centre on the evening of Saturday 14 January between 7 and 9pm. The Star Hub provides a warm indoor space and a perfect viewing area. Tickets at £16 for adults and £10.50 for children are available online at

Independent Thirsk Traders is a trading group holding craft fairs throughout the year. Most of its traders hand craft their individual creations which include jewellery, cards, cushions, bags, crystals, pictures, sweet hampers, wood turned clocks, floral display pieces and many more. They are all local people bringing their talents to share with others in villages around Thirsk.

Big Garden Birdwatch
The 2023 Big Garden Birdwatch takes place over the weekend 27 – 29 January. Taking part in the count helps the RSPB build a vital snapshot of how garden birds are doing in the UK. You can register for the count and get access to some useful information, including a picture chart, about birds you are likely to encounter by going to https://www.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/birdwatch/

It’s easy! Simply count the birds you see from your garden, balcony or local park for an hour, then go online to tell the RSPB what you saw. You can watch from inside with a cuppa or wrap up warm and sit quietly with the birds outside.

So, if you’ve made a resolution to take more action for nature this year, Birdwatch is a great way to start.

Topcliffe Surgery
The Surgery has experienced a large increase in the number of patients not showing up for their appointments. Between 1 and 29 December, ninety-six appointments were wasted due to non-attendance, with twenty-six of these wasted appointments in the week before Christmas alone. In an ever-busy world, surgery managers and doctors fully appreciate that unforeseen circumstances or last minute changes in schedules occur, but they appeal to anyone who can’t keep an appointment to let the surgery know. This enables staff to offer the slot to another patient.
Mummers fail to turn up
Due to illness, the Mummers performers were unable to appear as planned in Topcliffe on Thursday 30 December. It was unfortunate that they didn’t to get a message through to people in the village who could have let others know that the performances wouldn’t be going ahead. It appears a few people travelled to Topcliffe to see the plays and dancing and others left the warmth of their homes to watch the street-based theatre. It was a shame that the show didn’t go ahead, but we look forward to next year’s performances.
Dance date for your diary
Those of you who enjoyed some great music and dancing when The Flying Oysters visited Topcliffe pre-Covid, will be pleased to hear that they are coming back for a repeat performance. They’ve been booked for Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall on Saturday 22 April. It’ll be a bring your own drinks evening but a tasty supper will be provided at the interval. Ticket prices and more information will follow soon. But for now, please make a note of the date in your diary.

Fire safety in your home
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service has issued guidance to help residents stay safe from fire this winter. With fuel prices rising, many people may turn to alternative ways to heat their home, cook their food or manage other electrical appliances, and so this guidance provides advice on how best to avoid risks and stay safe. This includes:

  • Heating your home using devices such as portable heaters, solid fuel heating, outdoor heating and electric blankets.
  • Cooking – specifically using disposable or portable equipment.
  • Safe use of electrical appliances such as washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers.
  • The safe use of candles.
  • Fire detection and smoke alarms.
  • Signposting to support services that can help with managing energy bills, staying warm this winter and identifying fire risks in the home.

The guidance is available on this websitehttp://www.northyorkshire-pfcc.gov.uk/besafefeelsafe

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service can visit eligible members of the public to offer fire safety advice to reduce and prevent fires, identify possible risks in the home, test smoke alarms, plan potential escape routes and talk through bedtime routines to ensure safety during the night. To find out more visit: http://www.northyorksfire.gov.uk/your-safety/book-a-visit

Christmas tree disposal
People will soon be thinking of taking down their Christmas tree and if they have real ones, thinking about how best to dispose of them. Residents in Topcliffe will benefit from a special one-off green waste collection by Hambleton Council on Thursday 12 January which is an opportunity to dispose of your tree. Trees must be chopped to be fully inside your green wheelie bin. Other green waste can also be included.

There isn’t a similar special collection for Harrogate residents so those living in Asenby will have to make arrangements to dispose of their tree at a local Household Waste Recycling Centre. The nearest is located near Thirsk (Ox Moor Plantation Lane, Sowerby, Thirsk YO7 1FA) and it’s open everyday except today (New Year’s Day) and Wednesdays 8.30am to 4pm.

Raise funds for Great Ouseburn School
