Sunday Email: Issue 158

Welcome to the Sunday Email.

Whether you are a Royalist or not, no-one could deny that Britain did what it does best yesterday. Pomp and tradition abounded, it was a right royal occasion and precision personified. All those involved yesterday should be rightly proud.

Our two villages certainly seemed to put on their own show for the coronation with bunting, garlands, knitting and street parties. And it was great to see so many people enjoy a garden party with live entertainment at the Angel yesterday. Maggie and Dave did what they do best, perfect hosts. There wasn’t a seat left in the hotel’s large garden, children had fun running around and there were lots of happy dogs for us to pat.
Thanks to Maggie and Dave and we hope your renovations are going well. So many people turning up yesterday was a real message of support for you. The whole community is looking forward to your opening early autumn.

Coronation bench unveiled
Asenby’s new Coronation Bench, which is dedicated to the memory of Ben Lowe, (see plaque photograph here) was unveiled yesterday on the day of the King’s Coronation. The bench was commissioned and paid for by Asenby Institute and constructed by local blacksmith, Louis Sturt. It is positioned at the far end of the main street through Asenby, close to the junction with Thwaites Lane.
Churchyard helpers needed
Weather permitting, on the next three Saturdays – 13, 20 and 27 May – it’s hoped that community volunteers will step forward to give a helping hand with some ground maintenance at St Columba’s churchyard. Volunteers are asked to meet at 10am. The aim is to tidy up the churchyard in advance of the St Columba’s Village History weekend on 3/4 June (see details elsewhere in this email).

The tasks needing attention include:

  • a ‘short-cut’ to the grass paths and areas.
  • a ‘spring cut’ to the remainder, longer grass.
  • weeding of the gravel paths as required before applying some further gravel.
  • border weeding.
  • sweeping the steps down towards the bridge.
  • some pruning, as necessary.

There’s lots of ways in which to get involved and any help, whether large or small, will be very much appreciated. It is always lovely to have this green area in the centre of our village looking neat and well tended.

Anyone prepared to offer an hour or two is asked to let John Phillips know by email johnphillips05 or telephone 01845 577934 or just turn up if you can. Come with suitable equipment (robust mowers, strimmers, forks, spades, if you can).

There’s a very special event planned in June to mark St Columba’s Day and to celebrate the history of Topcliffe and the role of the church over the centuries. On Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 June St Columba’s Church is organising a Village History Weekend and this year it will explore how events of the 17th century affected the people of Topcliffe. Plans are well underway and include:
• A visit from members of Sir Thomas Lunsford’s Regiment, a re-enactment group specialising in recreating the battles and lifestyles of the English Civil War. There’ll be a talk and presentation of arms and artefacts from the period with opportunities for children and adults to get involved. The regiment will camp over the weekend and march through both Asenby and Topcliffe to undertake training exercises on the village playing field.
• A talk from the Prayer Book Society on the Sunday afternoon in celebration of the beauty, poetry and majesty of the Book of Common Prayer (1662) as used in St Columba’s services of Evensong and Matins. Followed by tea and then Choral Evensong at 6.30pm.
• Displays of archives, papers and artefacts from the 17th century – if anyone has anything they might lend to add to this, please do get in touch. This could include a review of the story surrounding the exchange of the ‘King for Gold’ in 1646 at or near Topcliffe.
• A picnic or barbecue in the churchyard on Sunday lunchtime, plus teas and tours of the Church, including the chance to climb to the top of the tower and admire the views (not for young children).

The programme may be extended as new opportunities arise.

Major Kevin Young MBE
News of the passing of Kevin Young aged just 64 has shocked our community and the military world, which he was a part of for 43 years. Kevin died very suddenly on Saturday 22 April.

Kevin was born in Sunderland, travelled the world with the army, but he and Lorna settled in Topcliffe in 2001. Kevin was a popular member of the community – always positive, cheerful, helpful, and always impeccably dressed.

A true gentleman, Kevin was highly respected by everyone who knew him, especially those who served with him, played sport with him, were involved with him in his many charitable efforts… and those who simply knew him as a friend and neighbour.

He will be hugely missed by all those who knew and loved him. Our thoughts are with his wife Lorna, children David and Lyn and their partners Rob and Jo and his grandchildren Madeleine, William, Alfie and Lewie.

Kevin is to have a full military funeral with honours at St Mary’s Church, Thirsk on Thursday 11 May at 11.30am.

Police warn of insulation scammers in our area
North Yorkshire Police say they have received several reports of residents receiving telephone calls from individuals claiming that they need to visit the property to inspect the loft insulation. These bogus callers say it’s so that they can supply a certificate as part of a ‘government scheme’. These calls are from scammers, so residents are asked to:
Always

  • be wary of any approach made in a telephone cold call.
  • check the credentials of any company that contacts you out of the blue.
  • check any claims made, especially when the company is claiming to work with other agencies.
  • check the IDs of anyone who visits your property and keep any paperwork they give you.

Never

  • provide any personal information to a caller that is not required.
  • agree to any work done until you have received a second opinion.

On Saturday 20 May he will undertake a three-hour long ‘singathon’ to raise funds for Shelterbox, a charity that provides much needed support to individuals and families around the world where shelter and life-sustaining support is needed.

As the singathon is soon after King Charles’ coronation, all the hymns and songs will include ‘King’ or ‘Crown’ in their content.

It takes place at the Methodist Church in Northallerton. Everyone welcome to pop in between 10am and 1pm on the day. Refreshments will be available.

Topcliffe History Weekend

Amelia cleans up
When ignorant drivers and their passengers throw their coffee cups and sandwich wrappers out of their vehicle windows do they ever give a thought about who will have to pick up their disgusting litter?

Maybe they think the highway authority or the council will send it a team to remove their rubbish. But do they ever think that the job is left to proud residents – people who are so ashamed of unsightly verges at the entrances to their village that they go out and do the job? Do they care or even think about such things?

Probably not. But the fact is that here in Topcliffe and Asenby residents are proud of where they live and are disgusted when they see litter strewn all over the pavements, verges and lanes.

There are plenty of locals who when out for exercise will take a litter pick and bag to remove litter along their walk route. And there’s also youngsters like Amelia Pearson, who also get sick and tired of the mess. Amelia is prepared to give up part of her Sundays to go out with her parents to clean up the place. Last Sunday they collected three bags of litter in less than an hour at the Dalton Lane end of Topcliffe. Well done Amelia and thank you for caring. Thanks too, to Marie and John Pearson for helping.

Quiz night at the Village Hall
TONIGHT – the weekly Sunday quiz is on at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall. Come along at 8pm. The quiz is attracting a regular crowd of around 25 each week and its turning out to be a great social evening. There’s always room for a few more quizzers, so if you fancy testing your general knowledge and later having a chat with friends and neighbours, please come along. Bring your own drinks and nibbles. Glasses are available, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.
Easter Trail
Although not as many people as normal took part in this year’s Easter egg hunt, those that did had a great time. So, a big thank you to each and every participant who followed the clues and found the hidden eggs. Well done to Rosie Foster and family who won the Easter Bunny’s Chocolate Hamper.

The event raised £50 for the Friends of Topcliffe School. Thanks to organiser Karen Hotham and also to The Elm Gallery and Topcliffe Post Office for all their help with distribution of the forms.

Flying Oysters lift the roof on the Village Hall
Last night’s performance at the Village Hall by the Flying Oysters, reputedly one of the best bands in the North East, really rocked Topcliffe and had everyone on the dance floor from start to finish. The group were last in Topcliffe pre the Covid pandemic and on that occasion they went down a storm too!

A sell-out crowd enjoyed the evening’s music and a supper prepared and served by Karen and Malcolm Morley, Linda Carver and Linda Robinson. A big thank you to them for their time and commitment. Thanks are also due to the staff at the Post Office who helped sell tickets, to those who helped set up the hall for the evening and to the kind residents who donated prizes for the raffle.

Although the final sums need to be done, the event raised around £370 for the upkeep and maintenance of the Village Hall.

Dangers of posting on social media whilst on holiday
Posting your holiday photos on social media whilst on holiday not only tells your friends and family you’re having a good time it also advertises to criminals that you’re away and your house is empty. Many insurers now have an exclusion stating that if you post photos advertising the fact that you are on holiday, you may not be covered if your house gets burgled. If your insurer does not have a specific Social Media Exclusion, they will have a general condition often called a ‘Duty of Care’ this will state that you must take reasonable precautions to try and prevent a claim. Advertising that you are on holiday is like placing a sign on your front door stating your house is empty. There are some steps you can take to keep safe:

  • Wait Until you get Back – Post your photos when you get home and don’t check in on Facebook as soon as you get to the airport or hotel.
  • Lock Down your Social Media – Keep your social media settings private so only your friends and family can see them.
  • Turn off Location Services – If this is on and linked to your social media accounts then it will post you’re your location.
  • Check your Friends List – Have a clear out of anyone who shouldn’t be there. Is there anyone on the list you don’t know? A friend request from a stranger may not be what it seems.
  • Remove personal details you don’t need – Check online to see just what you can find out about yourself; you may be surprised by what information is there.
  • Make sure you’re not tagged– Ask friends/family not to tag you and warn them only to post when you’re all home. Adjust the setting so you can review anything you are tagged in.
  • Check your insurance policy – Read the small print or contact your insurer to check for any clauses relating to posting on social media.
Emergency Alert to your mobile.
The government is launching a new emergency alert system enabling people to be contacted via their mobile phone if their lives are at risk and it will be tested today at 3pm. Emergency alerts will be sent to all compatible 4G and 5G mobile phones when there’s a danger to your life, health or property in the area you’re located. They don’t need your location or phone number and only the government and the emergency services can send messages. If you don’t have a mobile, you’ll still be kept informed through other channels.

If you receive an alert today as part of the system testing you won’t need to do anything. After the test and the system is live, if there is an emergency alert where you are, you’ll hear a loud, siren-like sound and a message will appear on your screen to tell you about the emergency and how best to react. To learn more, look out for the nationwide information campaign and visit http://www.gov.uk/alerts

DEFRA lifts bird flu order
The order that for six months has required bird keepers to keep their flocks indoors will be lifted on Tuesday 18 April as bird flu risks have significantly reduced. This means free-range flocks will once again be able to roam outdoors. However, the risk to flocks from avian influenza has not disappeared completely so bird keepers are being urged to maintain scrupulous biosecurity standards.

Pension Tax Changes
Changes to pensions, announced in last month’s budget, mean there’s some big changes to how pensions are taxed. The pensions’ annual tax-free allowance has been increased from £40,000 to £60,000, allowing people to save more for retirement in a tax efficient way.

Although this won’t be immediately beneficial to many readers, a few could benefit significantly especially company owners who can reduce corporation tax bills by making company pension contributions, something that could be particularly important following the corporation tax rate rise this year. For example, if a company owner had put off making pension contributions in the early years of trading, but is now well established, it makes good sense for them to make up for lost time and increase their pension pot now.

The pension lifetime allowance has also been abolished meaning there is no longer a tax charge on those with pension pots greater than £1.07m. However, it is important to note that the 25% tax free lump sum that can be drawn down when first taking a pension, is now capped at 25% of the old lifetime allowance of £1.07m.

For those who have already accessed their pension, new contributions eligible for tax relief were capped at £4,000. This was done to stop people withdrawing the 25% tax free lump sum and ‘recycling’ it into their pension pot to gain further tax relief. In the budget this limit was increased to £10,000 per year as a way of encouraging people to continue to enhance their pension pots.

New Emergency Alerts to your Mobile
A new emergency alerts system enabling people to be contacted via their mobile phone if their lives are at risk is about to be launched by the government. The service will be used to warn you about life-threatening emergencies such as severe flooding.

Emergency alerts are messages sent to all compatible 4G and 5G mobile phones when there’s a danger to your life, health or property in the area you’re located. They don’t need your location or phone number and only the government and the emergency services can send messages. If you don’t have a mobile, you’ll still be kept informed through other channels.

To ensure the service works effectively, there will be a nationwide test on Sunday 23rd April. If you receive a test alert you won’t need to do anything.

After that, if you get an emergency alert on your phone, you’ll hear a loud, siren-like sound. A message on your screen will tell you about the emergency and how best to react, depending on the incident. You’ll be able to check an alert is genuine at gov.uk/alerts.

To learn more, look out for the nationwide information campaign and visit http://www.gov.uk/alerts

Big thank you to the Warm Space volunteers
We have some amazing people in our two villages. People who care about the health and well-being of their friends and neighbours, particularly those who are less fortunate than others and need a little support now and again.

One recent example of fantastic volunteering is the Warm Space lunches that ran throughout the winter months and ended on Wednesday 29 March. During the six months over 2,720 meals were served, mostly to those who came along to the lunches to enjoy the food, keep warm and socialise, but of these, 350 were delivered to the homes of those unable to get to the Village Hall.

Most of food served was prepared and donated by the volunteers but some had to be purchased using cash donated at each lunch. But a staggering £1,700 was raised and given to seventeen local charities and a further £1,200, in the form of cash or groceries, was distributed to villagers thought to need a bit of help.

So a big thank you to: Karen and Malcolm Morley, Linda Carver, Richard Byas, Linda Robinson, Jane Burnett, Julie Coldbeck, Chris Bailey and Amanda Graham…and of course, to everyone who attended lunches or contributed in any way whatsoever.
