Sunday Email: Issue 208

Welcome to your Sunday Email.

Starting today, the format of entries in the Sunday Email is changing. There are so many events that are jostling for a mention that I have decided to follow the following basic rule: events taking place on the day the email is published will be listed first, then news items and events relating to Topcliffe and Asenby, and finally events elsewhere in the area in date order.

Boccia Club – more members needed
Last week’s appeal for new members to help secure the future of the weekly Boccia Club held at the Village Hall had only very limited success. Just one extra person turned up for last Tuesday’s session. That’s a start, but a few more members would help ensure that the club has a sound future.

Boccia is a gentle seat-based exercise class but more than that it is a lovely social occasion with conversation over a cup of tea and piece of cake. It’s an ideal activity for people aged over sixty. Boccia Club meets between 1.30 and 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoons (but not this Tuesday 30 April as the organisers aren’t available) at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall and it costs £3 per person.

Energy Heroes
Pupils in Maple class at Topcliffe Academy have been learning about different ways we can all look to protect the planet by either using less energy or by using energy that has been produced in more sustainable ways.

A company called Energy Heroes spent time in the school explaining the difference between renewable energy sources and fossil fuels, later analysing data on how energy consumption in the UK has changed over the years. The aim overall was to empower the children with the knowledge and the drive to effect necessary change in the world.

The highlight of the day was the selection of the school’s own ‘Topcliffe Energy Heroes’ (pictured), who went on to complete an audit of the school with the help of the experts. They gathered information and data about the school’s energy use and started work on an action plan to show how Topcliffe Academy can contribute to improved energy use in the future. Look out for more information coming from the Energy Heroes team soon.

Rail disruption Leeds-Manchester
If you’re planning a rail journey across the Pennines you need to be aware that there will be four weeks of disruption to weekday services in West Yorkshire through to 17 May. The work is being carried out as part of the Transpennine Upgrade, a multi-billion pound programme to improve the route between York, Leeds and Manchester. In particular, weekday trains between Northallerton/ Thirsk/ York and Manchester airport will be replaced by buses for part of the journey. Check your journey at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/status-and-disruptions
FOTS need a Treasurer
FOTS – the Friends of Topcliffe School – are in urgent need of finding a new Treasurer, an essential post if the organisation is going to continue to function. Voluntary groups like FOTs must have a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer to operate effectively and unless a volunteer steps forward soon, there’s a danger FOTS will have to close down and all of the vital support that it gives the school will be lost.

Most parents of school age children will know all about the many things that FOTS does to support the school. This includes giving every new starter a book bag and all leavers a branded hoodie. They also contribute to the leavers’ party, subsidise the annual pantomime and meet an annual challenge set by the school to raise funds for a larger project. Last year the new climbing equipment was purchased and this year the plan is to buy sixteen new iPads.

If you feel like you would be able to help and would like more information on what the role entails, please get in touch with the academy office or visit the FOTS Facebook page.

St Columba’s churchyard maintenance
Have you got an hour or so to to help get St Columba’s churchyard into shape for summer? The first working party will meet on Saturday 4 May starting at 9.30 through to about 12.30pm…and maybe continuing into the afternoon if anyone has sufficient energy and the weather is kind.

Then further sessions on the following Saturdays in May, weather permitting. Volunteers don’t have to be there for the whole time: they can simply pop along and do what they can to give their support. There’ll be some tools and lawnmowers available, but if people can bring whatever they might have to help – rakes, trowels, spades, forks, extra mowers etc. – that would be wonderful. Refreshments will be served.

Village Quiz
TONIGHT: Sunday 21 April – The quiz is on at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall at 8pm.
Last week’s quiz winners were Liz, Steve and Doug. The quizmaster was Alan. Well done everyone: another excellent evening.
The Angel
The Angel is open for Sunday lunch today (21 April) but will be closed next Sunday (28 April) due to electrical works being carried out in the building.
Soup & Sweet Lunch
The next Soup & Sweet lunch will be held at the Village Hall on Wednesday 1 May from 11.30 to 12.45pm. There’ll be a selection of home-made soups, puddings, delicious cakes and bakes and tea or coffee. All welcome. No set charge, but donations welcome.

At the last Soup & Sweet lunch (17 April) 48 lunches were served and £144 was raised. A donation of £50 was made to Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall and after paying rent, the balance was added to the Warm Hub Community Fund.

Asenby has two new parish councillors
Following the extensive publicity on Facebook and via the Sunday Email, two residents of Asenby have stepped forward to join Asenby Parish Council. They are Steve Gallon and Tom Miles. Both have been co-opted onto the parish council and will be attending their first meeting and AGM on Wednesday 8 May in Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall.

Chairman of the parish council, Colin Grimston said: "It is great that Steve and Tom have volunteered to join the parish council and play a role in village affairs. They bring lots of experience and have already been actively involved in working on the Community Park with other volunteers. I and the other parish councillors look forward to working with them.”

Appeal to save the Boccia Club
The weekly Boccia Club held on Tuesdays at the Village Hall is in danger of folding unless a few more members can be recruited. Numbers have dwindled in recent months and it has become increasingly difficult to meet the hall rental costs. Now organiser Judith Lowe is making a final appeal to try and increase the numbers attending. She says: "Boccia is a gentle seat-based exercise class but more than that it is a lovely social occasion with conversation over a cup of tea and piece of cake. There are many residents aged over sixty in our two villages and many of them could benefit greatly by popping along to meet friends and neighbours…and undertake some gentle but useful exercise. It would be awful if this supportive group had to fold, but that will be the outcome if new members aren’t recruited soon."

Boccia Club meets between 1.30 and 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoons at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall and it costs £3 per person.

Church electoral roll
To be added to St Columba’s Church electoral roll you must register by Sunday 5 May.
Being on the church electoral roll provides the opportunity to select who runs the church and how it functions by voting in the Annual Parochial Church Council Meeting, which this year will be held on Monday 20 May at 7pm.

To be added to the church electoral roll you must:

  • be baptised and aged over 16, and
  • be a member of the Church of England (or a Church in communion with the C of E) and resident in the parish
  • or not resident in the parish but have attended public worship in the parish during the last six months. If you would have attended worship but are prevented by illness or other essential reason this is also acceptable
  • be a member of another church not in communion with the C of E but which subscribes to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and have attended public worship in the parish during the past six months.

Forms are available in St Columba’s church or by post from Kit Norris, Church Electoral Roll Officer, Cote House, Burrill, Bedale, DL8 1TR, or by email: kitnorris

Drivers over 70 must renew their driving licence
Research just published suggests that approximately 25% of drivers over the age of 70 – that’s around 1.5 million people – have failed to renew their driving licences according to a law that has been in place since 1976, which means they could face a £1,000 fine. These drivers are required to update their licence at the age of 70 and every three years after that. But many drivers are unaware of this rule, with one in five admitting they didn’t know about it.

The DVLA offers free licence renewal for drivers aged 70 or over. The reason behind getting mature drivers to regularly renew their licence is to ensure the safety of the drivers themselves, and everyone else on the roads. The renewal process is quick, easy and in most cases motorists can continue to drive while their licence is being renewed.

Mayoral Election
On Thursday 2 May electors in North Yorkshire and York will have the opportunity to vote for the person they want to be the mayor until 2028.

North Yorkshire and York Councils have formed a Combined Authority to work together, using some of the money and powers that up to now have been held by central government. This combined authority will be led by the newly elected mayor with the support of two councillors from each of the two councils and the chair of the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority Business Committee.

There are six candidates on the ballot paper:

  • Felicity Clare Cunliffe-Lister – Liberal Democrats
  • Keane Charles Duncan – The Conservative Party
  • Kevin Foster – The Green Party
  • Paul Haslam – Independent
  • David Skaith – Labour & Co-operative Party
  • Keith Graham Tordoff – Independent.

Residents of Topcliffe will vote at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall whilst Asenby residents will vote at Rainton Village Hall). The polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm. You do not have to take a polling card with you to vote, though it may save time if you do. Voters will need to show photo ID.

Experienced local house/pet sitter
Holly, daughter of Asenby residents Steve and Jane Gallon, has recently returned from living overseas for the past decade. She has a portfolio of experience with house sitting in Australia and the USA. She has looked after a wide variety of properties from suburban cottages to a five acre hobby farm. Holly has had the opportunity to take care of many furry and feathered friends, whilst often also putting her green fingers to good use.

The Sunday Email a couple of weeks ago highlighted the importance of villagers doing their part to maintain a safe and secure community for everyone, so as the summer holiday season approaches Holly thinks that offering her services to our two villages is a wonderful way for her to contribute to what she can already see is an amazing community.

Holly is currently working part time at The Crab Manor Hotel and spends a few hours a week volunteering at Bridge End Equestrian Centre. Call or message Holly for more details on 07565 199344.

Last week’s quiz was set by Jim and Carol Shaw’s granddaughter, Isobel (with a little help from grandsons Oscar and Elijah). It was a though-provoking set of questions – the sort of challenge the quizzers really enjoy. The winners were a SAD lot – Susan, Alan and Derek. Well done everyone concerned.
Next project at Asenby Community Park
Volunteers are being sought for the next stage of work on the Community Park. The plan is to shred the branches recently cut from the hedges and use the mulch to spread around the recently planted trees. This work will take place on Wednesday 17th April starting at 9:30am. All volunteers will be welcomed with open arms, particularly if they can bring a wheelbarrow or some other receptacle for moving the mulch (and a shovel or similar).
Subject to the weather, so watch out for notifications on the village Facebook page.

Topcliffe & Asenby Produce Show 2024

The show will be held on Saturday 31 August at Topcliffe & Asenby Village Hall and there will be 83 classes in five categories:
– 47 classes in the Horticultural section

The full list of categories and show rules, together with timings on the day, are available here.

St Columba’s churchyard maintenance
Volunteers are being sought to help get St Columba’s churchyard into shape for summer. John Phillips is planning a first working party on Saturday 4 May starting at 9.30 through to about 12.30pm. Then on the following Saturdays in May, weather permitting.

Village BBQ
As last year, all volunteers, along with all other villagers, will be welcome to attend the village BBQ in the churchyard on the Sunday 9 June as part of the St Columba’s Weekend celebrations.

Church electoral roll
St Columba’s Church electoral roll is being updated and residents of Topcliffe are being invited to be added to the register and to become more involved with their church. The church provides weekly traditional services open to everyone as well being the venue for Christian baptisms, marriages and funerals. Being on the church electoral roll provides the opportunity to select who runs the church and how it functions by voting in the Annual Parochial Church Council Meeting, which this year will be held on Monday 20 May at 7pm.

The Electoral Roll is open until 5 May for applicants who are:

  • (a) baptised and 16 years and older, and
  • (b) a member of the Church of England (or Church in communion with the C of E) and resident in the parish, or not resident who have attended public worship in the parish during the last six months. If you would have attended worship but are prevented by illness or other essential reason this is also acceptable.

Members in good standing of other churches not in communion with the C of E who subscribe to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and have attended public worship in the parish during the past six months may also apply. Forms are available in St Columba’s church or by post from Kit Norris, Church Electoral Roll Officer, Cote House, Burrill, Bedale, DL8 1TR, or by email: kitnorris

We are most grateful to those who volunteer to keep the churchyard trimmed and tidy for use by those visiting the church and graves, or those simply using the grounds as walkers and dog walkers.

St Columba’s churchyard maintenance
Volunteers are being sought to help to get St Columba’s churchyard into shape for summer. Unfortunately anticipated external help from the Community Pay Back scheme hasn’t materialised and, as the church wardens are strapped for funds, they cannot afford to hire contractors. So once again it’s a matter of relying on the goodwill of those who can help in any way to keep this special green space in the centre of our village in a state that is welcoming to all whether locals, passers-by or walkers, with or without dogs.

Organiser John Phillips said:” I think those who helped out last year greatly enjoyed the opportunity to get busy with the large and happy group of volunteers that turned out to help. They were keen to help tidy up this very visible feature of our village and also to enjoy a social occasion together. So, I am planning a first working party on Saturday 4 May starting at 9.30 through to about 12.30pm. Then on the following Saturdays in May, as appropriate and weather permitting.

“Volunteers don’t have to be there for the whole time: they can simply pop along and do what they can to give their support. There’ll be some tools and lawnmowers available, but if people can bring whatever they might have to help – rakes, trowels, spades, forks, extra mowers etc. – that would be wonderful.” Refreshments will be served.

Village BBQ
As last year, all volunteers, along with all other villagers, will be welcome to attend the village BBQ in the churchyard on the Sunday 9 June as part of the St Columba’s Weekend celebrations.
